ગામ ધારીમાં સત્સંગી દરબાર મેરામભાઇ માંજરિયા, રાઘવજી શેઠ, ધનજી શેઠ અને વિપૃ કચરાભાઇ ગોર ચારેય જણ ગાઢ મિત્રો હતા. મેરામભાઇ માંજરીયા શુરવિર ભકત હતા કે જેમણે સમજણ પૂર્વકનો સત્સંગ રાખ્યો તો!
કચરા ગોર દ્વારા તેઓ શાસ્ત્ર-પુરાણનું શ્રવણ કરતા, ક્યાંય બહારગામ જવાનું થાય તો ચારેય કાયમ સાથે જતા. એકવખત મેરામભાઇ, રાઘવજી શેઠ, ધનજી શેઠ અને કચરા ગોર પોતાના કોઈ કામ પ્રસંગે વડોદરા ગયેલા. વડોદરામાં શ્રીસ્વામિનારાયણ ભગવાનના એક ભક્તનો એમને ભેટો થયો, પેલા તો જોઇને એમને કુતુહલ થયું પણ પોત ચારેય મુમુક્ષુ જીવ હતા એટલે તેણે એ ભક્ત સાથે પુછપરછ કરી એટલે એમણે વડોદરામાં રહેલા સદગુરુ ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામીના પ્રતાપની વાતો કરી. આથી તેઓએ નક્કી કર્યું કે જો આ ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામી, જો ખરેખર આ લોકો કહે છે તેવા મહાન હોય તો આપણે તેની ખરાઈ કરવી જોઈએ. જો આ લોકો કહે છે તેવા મહાન સંત હોય તો આપડેય તેમને શરણે થઈએ, માટે તેમની મહત્તાની ખરાઈ કરવા માટે તેમના પાહે જઈએ.
ચારેયે મળીને નકરી કર્યું કે આપણે મનમાં સંકલ્પો કરીએ, જો ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામી આપણા સંકલ્પો જાણી જાય અને આપણે જેમ ધાર્યું હોય તે પ્રમાણે થાય તો એને મોટા પુરુષ જાણીને તેના આશરે જઈએ. આમ નક્કી કરીને ચારે જણે જુદા જુદા સંકલ્પો કર્યા. મેરામભાઈએ એવો સંકલ્પ કર્યો કે તે ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામી મને એમ કહે કે આ બંધુક અને તલવાર હથિયાર તરીકે રાખવામાં કાંઈ માલ નથી, વળી મને એમ કહે છતા બંધુક અને તરવાર રખાવે અને આપત્કાળે ધર્મની રક્ષા કરવા એનો સદઉપયોગ કરવો તેમ પણ કહે..!
આ રીતે ચારેય જણાએ જુદા જુદા સંકલ્પો કરીને તેઓ ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામી પાસે ગયા. ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામી ભક્તોની સભા ભરીને બેઠા હતા. ચારેય જણ ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામીને નમન પ્રણામ કરીને સભામાં બેઠા. સદગુરુ ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામી અંતર્યામીપણે એમના મનના સંકલ્પો જાણીને સામુ જોઇને મંદ હાસ્ય કરીને મેરામભાઈને કહ્યું “ દરબાર ! તમે ક્ષત્રિ કુળના છો માટે હથિયાર મા બંધૂક ને તલવાર વગેરે ભલે રાખો ! શસ્ત્ર રાખવા એ તો તમારો ક્ષત્રિયનો ધર્મ છે અને શસ્ત્ર રાખવા એ તો તમારો શણગાર છે, પરંતુ સાવધાની એ રાખજો કે એનાથી કોઈ ગરીબનો દ્રોહ ન થઈ જાય, એનાથી નિર્દોષ જીવડા ન મરાય એવું વ્રત રાખી શકાય તો ભલે આવા શસ્ત્રો રાખો, બાકી આ બંધુક અને તરવાર ને હથિયાર રાખવા એમાં કાંઈ માલ નથી !” આવું સ્પષ્ટ વચન સાંભળીને મેરામભાઇ તો ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામીને પગે વળગી જ પડયા !
બીજે દિવસે બીજા ત્રણેયના સંકલ્પો પણ સ્વામીએ સાચા કર્યા એટલે ચારેય એકબીજા ને ઇશારાથી સંમતિ આપીને સ્વામીના પ્રતાપ ને સ્વીકાર્યો. મેરામભાઈએ તો તુરંત જ ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામીને શરણમાં લેવા પ્રાર્થના કરી, સ્વામીએ તેમને હાથમા જળ લઇને સત્સંગના વર્તમાન ધરાવ્યા. થોડા દિવસ વડોદરા રોકાઈને ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામી પાસે ખુબ સમાગમ કરીને પોતાને ગામ ધારી જવા માટે રજા લેવા ગયા, ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામીએ તેઓને ખાસ ભલામણ કરીને વળતા પોતાને ગામ ધારી જતા વખતે ગામ ગઢપુર શ્રી સ્વામિનારાયણ ભગવાનના દર્શન કરીને જવા કહ્યું.
ગઢડા જતા સૌએ રસ્તે વિચાર કર્યો કે ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામી તો મહાન છે, એમાં કોઈ શંકા નથી, પણ એના ગુરુ આ સ્વામિનારાયણ એ ભગવાન છે તો તેનું પણ પારખું તો કરવું જ જોઈએ, આમ વિચારીને તેઓએ એવો સંકલ્પ કર્યો કે ગઢપુર તો સાવ નાનું ગામ છે, અત્યારે તયા ગામમાં દાડમ મળે તેવી ઋતુ નથી, આવા નાના ગામમાં તો એવા ફળો અત્યારે એની મોસમ વગર ન મળે, માટે આપણે એવો સંકલ્પ કરીએ કે દર્શને જઈએ ત્યારે આપણને આપણા નામ લઈને એક એક ને બોલાવે, અને દરેકને એક એક દાડમ પોતાના હાથે જ આપે તો સ્વામિનારાયણ ભગવાન છે તેમ માનવા. આ સિવાય ચારેય જણાએ બીજા પણ સંકલ્પો કરી રાખેલા, મેરામભાઇ માંજરીયા એવો સંકલ્પ કરીને ગઢડા આવ્યા ત્યારે શ્રીજીમહારાજે સર્વેના નામ લઈને દરેકને એક એક મોટું દાડમ આપ્યું અમે બધાના સંકલ્પો પૂર્ણ કર્યા. ચારેયને માનપાન આપીને સભામા બેસાડ્યા અને સૌને ઓળખાણ કરાવી, શ્રીહરિએ એમને ગઢપુરમા થોડા દિવસ રોક્યા એટલે ચારેય થોડા દિવસ ગઢપુર રોકાયા. દરબારગઢમાં સૌ સંતોનો સમાગમ કર્યો. દરરોજ સભામા શ્રીજીમહારાજના વચનામૃતો સાંભળીને મેરામભાઇ દ્રઢ સત્સંગી થયા. આમ શ્રીહરિની કૃપાએ મેરામભાઇ મોટા મુક્ત સ્થિતિવાળા ભક્ત થયા હતા.

સદગુરુ નિષ્કુળાનંદ સ્વામીએ શ્રીભક્તચિંતામણી ના પ્રકરણ ૧૧૪માં કડી ૧૫મા આ ધારી ગામના મેરામભાઇ માંજરીયા વગેરેને ચિંતવતા લખ્યું છે કે… મોટા મુક્ત મેરામ માંજરિયો, જેણે સમજીને સતસંગ કરીયો..! રાઘવજી ધનો તુલાધાર, દ્વિજ કચરો ધારી મોજાર..!!

गाँव धारी में सत्संगी दरबार मेरामभाई मांजरिया, राघवजी सेठ, धनजी सेठ और विप्र कचराभाई गोर—ये चारों घनिष्ठ मित्र थे। मेरामभाई मांजरिया एक ऐसे शूरवीर भक्त थे, जिन्होंने अत्यंत समझदारी और विवेकपूर्वक सत्संग को अपने जीवन में उतारा था!
कचरा गोर के मुख से वे सभी नित्य शास्त्र-पुराणों का श्रवण करते थे और जब भी कहीं बाहर जाना होता, तो चारों सदैव साथ जाते थे। एक बार किसी कार्यवश मेरामभाई, राघवजी सेठ, धनजी सेठ और कचरा गोर वडोदरा गए। वडोदरा में उनकी भेंट भगवान श्रीस्वामिनारायण के एक निष्ठावान भक्त से हुई। पहले तो उन्हें देखकर कौतूहल हुआ, परंतु चारों मुमुक्षु जीव थे, इसलिए उन्होंने उस भक्त से जिज्ञासावश बातचीत की। उस भक्त ने वडोदरा में विराजमान सद्गुरु श्री गोपाळानंद स्वामी के अलौकिक प्रभाव और सामर्थ्य का वर्णन किया। इस पर चारों मित्रों ने विचार किया कि, “यदि गोपाळानंद स्वामी वास्तव में वैसे ही महान संत हैं जैसा यह भक्त कह रहा है, तो हमें उनकी परीक्षा करनी चाहिए। यदि वे सचमुच ऐसे समर्थ संत हैं, तो हम भी उनकी शरण में जाएँगे।”
चारों ने मिलकर निश्चय किया कि हम अपने मन में एक-एक गुप्त संकल्प करेंगे। यदि गोपाळानंद स्वामी हमारे मनोभावों को जान लें और जैसा हमने सोचा है वैसा ही घटित हो जाए, तो उन्हें सच्चा ‘महान पुरुष’ मानकर उनका आश्रय ग्रहण करेंगे। इस प्रकार चारों ने मन ही मन भिन्न-भिन्न संकल्प किए। मेरामभाई ने यह संकल्प किया कि, “यदि गोपाळानंद स्वामी मुझसे कहें कि हथियार के रूप में बंदूक और तलवार रखने में कोई सार नहीं है; और फिर भी यह कहकर वे मुझे बंदूक और तलवार रखने की आज्ञा दें तथा यह कहें कि आपत्ति काल में धर्म की रक्षा हेतु इनका सदुपयोग करना… तो मैं उन्हें महान मानूँगा!”
इस प्रकार अपने-अपने संकल्प लेकर चारों मित्र सद्गुरु गोपाळानंद स्वामी के सम्मुख पहुँचे। गोपाळानंद स्वामी भक्तों की सभा में विराजित थे। चारों ने स्वामी को प्रणाम किया और सभा में बैठ गए। सद्गुरु गोपाळानंद स्वामी ने अंतर्यामी रूप से उनके मनोभावों को जान लिया। उन्होंने मेरामभाई की ओर देखकर मंद मुस्कान के साथ कहा, “दरबार! आप क्षत्रिय कुल के हैं, इसलिए हथियार के रूप में बंदूक और तलवार आदि अवश्य रखिए! शस्त्र रखना तो क्षत्रिय का धर्म और उसका आभूषण है; किंतु इतनी सावधानी अवश्य रखना कि इनसे किसी निर्धन या असहाय पर अत्याचार न हो और किसी निर्दोष जीव की हत्या न हो। यदि ऐसा व्रत निभा सकें तो ऐसे शस्त्र भले रखिए, अन्यथा केवल बंदूक और तलवार जैसे हथियार रखने में कोई सार नहीं है!” स्वामी के मुख से अपने संकल्प के हूबहू शब्द सुनकर मेरामभाई विस्मय से भर गए और दौड़कर गोपाळानंद स्वामी के चरण पकड़ लिए!
अगले दिन स्वामी ने अन्य तीनों मित्रों के गुप्त संकल्पों को भी सत्य कर दिखाया। चारों ने एक-दूसरे को संकेत करके स्वामी के दिव्य सामर्थ्य को स्वीकार किया। मेरामभाई ने तुरंत गोपाळानंद स्वामी से अपनी शरण में लेने की प्रार्थना की। स्वामी ने हाथ में जल लेकर उन्हें सत्संग के पंच-वर्तमान धारण करवाए। कुछ दिन वडोदरा में रहकर गोपाळानंद स्वामी का सत्संग-लाभ लेने के बाद जब वे धारी लौटने की आज्ञा माँगने गए, तब गोपाळानंद स्वामी ने उनसे विशेष आग्रह किया कि लौटते समय गढ़पुर जाकर भगवान श्रीस्वामिनारायण के दर्शन अवश्य करना।
गढ़डा जाते समय मार्ग में चारों ने विचार किया कि, “गोपाळानंद स्वामी तो महान संत हैं, इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं; परंतु उनके गुरु स्वामिनारायण साक्षात् भगवान हैं, तो उनकी भी परीक्षा लेनी चाहिए।” उन्होंने विचार किया कि गढ़पुर एक अत्यंत छोटा गाँव है और इस समय वहाँ अनार (दाड़म) मिलना असंभव है; बिना मौसम के ऐसे छोटे गाँव में अनार कैसे मिल सकते हैं! अतः उन्होंने संकल्प किया कि, “दर्शन के समय यदि स्वामिनारायण हम चारों को हमारे नाम से पुकारें और अपने श्रीहस्तों से हम प्रत्येक को एक-एक अनार भेंट करें, तो हम उन्हें साक्षात् भगवान मानेंगे।”
इसके अतिरिक्त भी चारों ने मन में कुछ अन्य संकल्प कर रखे थे। जब वे गढ़डा पहुँचे, तब सर्वज्ञ श्रीजी महाराज ने उन चारों को नाम लेकर पुकारा, प्रत्येक को अपने कर-कमलों से एक-एक बड़ा अनार प्रसाद रूप में दिया और उनके सभी संकल्प पूर्ण कर दिए! श्रीजी महाराज ने चारों को यथोचित मान-सम्मान देकर सभा में बैठाया और सभी से उनका परिचय कराया। श्रीहरि की आज्ञा से वे कुछ दिन गढ़पुर में ही रुके। दरबारगढ़ में उन्होंने सभी संतों का दिव्य संग किया। नित्य सभा में श्रीजी महाराज के अमृतमय वचनामृत सुनकर मेरामभाई का सत्संग अत्यंत दृढ़ हो गया। इस प्रकार श्रीहरि की महती कृपा से मेरामभाई उच्च मुक्त की स्थिति प्राप्त करने वाले परम भक्त बने।

सद्गुरु निष्कुळानंद स्वामी ने ‘श्रीभक्तचिंतामणि’ के प्रकरण ११४ की कड़ी १५ में धारी गाँव के मेरामभाई मांजरिया आदि का स्मरण करते हुए लिखा है: મોટા મુક્ત મેરામ માંજરિયો, જેણે સમજીને સતસંગ કરીયો..! રાઘવજી ધનો તુલાધાર, દ્વિજ કચરો ધારી મોજાર..!!

Merambhai Manjariya of Dhari and Shriji Maharaj
In the village of Dhari, Darbar Merambhai Manjariya, Raghavji Sheth, Dhanji Sheth, and Vipra Kachrabhai Gor were four intimate friends. Merambhai Manjariya was a valiant devotee who had embraced Satsang with profound wisdom and deep spiritual understanding.
Kachra Gor used to recite the sacred scriptures and Puranas to them, and whenever they travelled, the four companions always went together. Once, they visited Vadodara for some business. There, they crossed paths with a dedicated devotee of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Initially intrigued, being genuine seekers of truth (mumukshu souls), they inquired about his faith. The devotee extolled the extraordinary spiritual stature and divine greatness of Sadguru Gopalanand Swami, who was residing in Vadodara. Thereupon, the four friends resolved: “If Gopalanand Swami is truly as exalted as described, we must test and verify his greatness. If he is indeed such a realized saint, we too will surrender to him.”
Together, they decided to make secret inner wishes (sankalpas) in their minds. If Gopalanand Swami could discern their hidden thoughts and fulfill them precisely as envisioned, they would acknowledge him as an exalted spiritual master (Mota Purush) and seek his holy refuge. Each friend made a distinct silent resolution. Merambhai wished in his heart: “If Gopalanand Swami tells me, ‘There is no intrinsic worth in keeping weapons like guns and swords,’ and yet, after saying so, bids me keep them to protect Dharma in times of adversity… then I shall believe in his greatness!”
With their respective resolutions, the four friends approached Sadguru Gopalanand Swami, who was addressing an assembly of devotees. They offered prostrations and took their seats. Discerning their inner thoughts through his omniscient vision, Sadguru Gopalanand Swami looked at Merambhai with a compassionate smile and said, “Darbar! You belong to the Kshatriya lineage, so you may certainly keep weapons such as a gun and a sword! Bearing arms is your duty as a warrior and an ornament of your valor. However, be vigilant that these weapons are never used to oppress the vulnerable, nor are innocent living beings harmed by them. If you can uphold such a vow of righteousness, by all means keep these weapons; otherwise, merely carrying guns and swords holds no true value!” Hearing his exact unspoken thoughts voiced with such clarity, Merambhai was astonished and fell at Gopalanand Swami’s holy feet in complete surrender!
The following day, Swami revealed and fulfilled the mental resolutions of the other three companions as well. Exchanging knowing glances of affirmation, all four acknowledged Swami’s divine spiritual prowess. Merambhai immediately pleaded with Gopalanand Swami to accept them under his wing. Taking sanctified water in his hands, Swami initiated them into the sacred vows (vartaman) of Satsang. After spending several days in Vadodara absorbing spiritual discourses, they sought permission to return to Dhari. Gopalanand Swami specifically instructed them that on their way home, they must visit the village of Gadhpur to have the divine darshan of Bhagwan Shri Swaminarayan.
On the way to Gadhada, they pondered: “Gopalanand Swami is undeniably a great saint, without a doubt. But his Guru, Swaminarayan, is proclaimed to be Bhagwan Himself—so He too must be put to the test!” They thought, “Gadhpur is a tiny village. At this time of year, pomegranates are out of season and cannot be found in such a small village. Therefore, let us make a resolve: when we go for darshan, if Swaminarayan calls each of us by name and personally hands each of us a fresh pomegranate with His own divine hands, only then shall we recognize Him as supreme Bhagwan.”
They harbored additional personal resolutions as well. Upon their arrival in Gadhada, the omniscient Shriji Maharaj called each of the four friends by name, placed a large, luscious pomegranate in their hands, and fulfilled all their unspoken desires! Shriji Maharaj treated them with immense reverence, seated them honorably in the assembly, and introduced them to everyone. At Shri Hari’s loving request, they extended their stay in Gadhpur for several days. Residing in the Darbargadh, they enjoyed the elevating company of the holy saints. Listening daily to Shriji Maharaj’s nectar-like Vachanamruts, Merambhai’s devotion became deeply rooted and unshakeable. Thus, by the divine grace of Shri Hari, Merambhai attained the elevated state of an enlightened devotee (mukta).

In ‘Shri Bhaktachintamani’, Chapter 114, Verse 15, Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami commemorates Merambhai Manjariya and his companions from Dhari: “Mota mukta Meram Manjariyo, jene samjine satsang kariyo..! Raghavji Dhano Tuladhar, Dvij Kachro Dhari mojar..!!”
