The Saints Bestow Moral Vows upon the Spirits
Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami served as the Mahant (administrative head) of the Junagadh Mandir for forty years, four months, and four days. During that golden era, he extensively toured Sorath, Kathiawad, Babariyawad, and Gohilwad, spreading Satsang and molding countless householder spiritual seekers into staunch, single-minded devotees (ekantik bhaktas).
Among these devoted souls was Dayabhai Patel of Mota Samadhiyala. Dayabhai decided to relocate to the village of Virpur near Dhari. With this intention, he went in search of good agricultural land close to the village. Near the outskirts (pādar) of Virpur, an expansive orchard-farm (vādi) was available at a throwaway price. Comparing the prevailing land prices, Dayabhai felt suspicious and inquired from the local villagers, “Why is such a large, prime farm located so close to the village being sold so cheaply?”
The villagers replied, “Dayabhai, many ghosts and spirits haunt that land. Whoever ventures there to work is harassed and tormented by them, and whoever stays overnight to guard the fields (vāhumpu) is devoured by them.” Hearing this, Dayabhai replied fearlessly, “We are devout Satsangis of Bhagwan Swaminarayan; we have no fear whatsoever of ghosts or evil spirits.” Dayabhai met the village Patel, settled the purchase with the landowner, and registered the legal deed.
Dayabhai then moved with his family from Mota Samadhiyala to Virpur. During the summer, he plowed the fields, prepared the soil, and sowed the seeds with the arrival of the monsoon. During the holy months of Ashadh and Shravan, when the crops grew tall and lush, he went to the farm at night to keep watch. Chanting the sacred name “Swaminarayan, Swaminarayan..!” and contemplating upon Shri Hari, he completed his rounds through the field and approached the farm well. Near the well, he encountered a gathering of spirits (bhutāval). Utterly fearless, chanting the divine name of Shri Hari in a resounding voice, he marched straight toward them. Dayabhai bellowed with commanding authority, “Hey you spirits! What are you doing here?”
Merambhai Manjariya, a brave Kshatriya devotee from Dangarva, was also accompanying him. In response to Dayabhai’s firm challenge, the spirits spoke out: “This farm belongs to us. We all perished here bound by worldly attachment (vāsanā) and became trapped in the ghostly realm. We never permit anyone to cultivate this land. But Bhagat, you constantly chant the holy name of Swaminarayan, so we are powerless to harm you! None of our ghostly powers work in your presence; on the contrary, as you approach us, we feel a scorching burning sensation!”
Dayabhai asked them with compassion, “Why are you suffering in this miserable ghostly existence?” The spirits replied, “We fought and killed one another over this very land, and due to our intense attachment to it, we became ghosts. But now, who can liberate us from this agonizing plight?” Dayabhai reasoned, “I can narrate the divine lilas and charitras of Bhagwan Swaminarayan to you, and our holy saints can redeem you from this agony and grant you liberation! But who will tend to my farm? I am alone, there is extensive agricultural work, and if I do not keep watch at night, stray cattle will destroy the standing crop. Otherwise, I would gladly narrate the divine discourses of Bhagwan to you!” Hearing this, the spirits eagerly pleaded, “Bhagat! We will perform all your farming tasks and diligently guard your crops day and night; please just narrate the sacred katha to us and bestow spiritual redemption upon our souls!”
From that day forth, every night Dayabhagat would come to the farm, sit comfortably on a cot, and narrate the divine stories and discourses of Bhagwan to the spirits, while the ghosts completed all the hard labor of the farm!
The villagers of Virpur were completely astonished by these extraordinary events. This routine continued for some time. Soon after, Sadguru Kaivalatmanand Swami, an eminent group leader (mandaldhāri saint) appointed by Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami, arrived in Virpur with his assembly of sadhus from Junagadh Mandir, invited by Dayabhai for spiritual fellowship. Dayabhai explained the entire situation regarding the ghosts to Swami and brought him to sanctify his farm with a holy visit (padhrāmani). Dayabhai devoutly prayed, “Swami, please mercifully grant supreme redemption (sadgati) to all these spirits!”
Moved with divine compassion by the devotee’s prayer, Swami offered sanctified water to Thakorji and poured the holy charanamrit into the well. He then commenced the collective singing (dhun) of the Swaminarayan Mahamantra. As the sacred vibrations resonated, twenty-five spirits emerged and stood humbly in a straight line. Swami initiated them into Satsang by administering the moral vows (vartaman), imparted spiritual counsel, and directed them to proceed to Badrikashram to perform penance for their final liberation.
Witnessing Dayabhagat’s unwavering faith in Bhagwan Swaminarayan, his absolute fearlessness, and the saints’ miraculous redemption of the spirits through the sacred dhun of the Swaminarayan Mahamantra, the villagers were awestruck. Deeply inspired by this divine miracle, many spiritual seekers took the vows (vartaman) and embraced the Swaminarayan Satsang fellowship.
