Lakshmiben Sutar of Punadi and Atmanand Swami
In the Kutch region, approximately 36 kilometers from Bhuj near Dahisara, lies the sacred village of Punadi. In this village lived an exalted and deeply devoted devotee named Lakshmiben Sutar. On one occasion, while touring Kutch for spiritual fellowship (satsang vicharan), Shriji Maharaj graced Punadi accompanied by a large entourage of approximately one hundred and fifty sadhus and devotees. Having taken their evening meal (vaalu) at the neighboring village of Dhinoy, Shri Hari and the assembly walked along the path sharing joyous spiritual humor until they arrived at Lakshmiben Sutar’s home in Punadi.
Lakshmiben’s house did not possess lavish amenities, but beholding her profound devotional love, Shri Hari and the sadhus stayed in her carpentry workshop (kodh). In accordance with the strict monastic code of asceticism prescribed for the sadhus, Shriji Maharaj had a curtain (mod) tied across the workshop and sat outside on a cot (dholiyo). This arrangement ensured that when male or female devotees came for darshan, the sadhus remained behind the partition while Shriji Maharaj sat graciously in full view of everyone.
When Lakshmiben inquired what meal she should prepare to feed the entire assembly, Shriji Maharaj replied, “Lakshmiba, everyone had their evening meal last night at the previous village, relishing sweet rice; hence, no one is hungry!” Lakshmiben lovingly persisted, “You dined late last night and walked all the way here on foot, yet You say You are not hungry—how can that be believed? You must certainly dine!”
Seeing Lakshmiben’s earnest insistence, Shriji Maharaj commanded, “We do not partake of rich or sweet delicacies; therefore, simply prepare simple dal and rotla.” Following Maharaj’s wish, Lakshmiben prepared millet flatbreads (bajra rotla) and urad dal for the noon meal. As instructed by Shriji Maharaj, all the sadhus and devotees gratefully partook of the simple dal and rotla.
While the sadhus were partaking of the bajra rotla and urad dal, a contemplative thought arose in the mind of Sadguru Atmanand Swami: ‘At what precise moment does a jiva enter the mother’s womb? How many jivas are there in this vast cosmos, and how can they ever be counted?’ Though this contemplation arose within him, Swami lacked the boldness to ask Shriji Maharaj openly in the assembly after the meal, and therefore remained silent. Knowing his unspoken thought as the indwelling Omniscient Lord (Antaryami), Shri Hari addressed the entire assembly, revealing: “This cosmos is filled with infinite jivas, beyond the calculation of any mortal. The enumeration of all jivas in existence is known solely to the Supreme Purushottam Narayan! And as the dispenser of the fruits of actions (Karma-phala-pradata), Purushottam Narayan alone guides each soul into the mother’s womb in accordance with its past karmas.” Thus, Shri Hari divinely resolved Atmanand Swami’s unspoken inner inquiry.
As dusk fell that evening, Lakshmiben came to ask about the evening meal (vaalu). Maharaj inquired of the sadhus, but none of them spoke. Thereupon, Shriji Maharaj said, “Prepare a little khichdi.” When Lakshmiben announced that the khichdi was ready, Maharaj called out in a loud, resonant voice to summon the sadhus: “Arise, great souls! Arise! Come, partake of the khichdi!” All the sadhus stood up to dine, but Paramchaitanyanand Swami and Atmanand Swami remained seated. Maharaj called out once more, “Come, holy souls, partake of the food!” Paramchaitanyanand Swami then stood up and went to dine, but Atmanand Swami still did not go.
Maharaj had previously commanded the sadhus to eat only once a day. Adhering strictly to this holy injunction, Atmanand Swami had already eaten during the noon meal and therefore felt it improper to eat a second time.
Noticing his absence, Lakshmibai told Maharaj, “One sadhu has remained without dining.” Maharaj replied, “Go and feed that sadhu yourself.” Lakshmibai said, “O Maharaj! How will he ever eat at my request? He will dine only if You personally feed him.” Maharaj looked toward Atmanand Swami and then asked Lakshmibai, “Is there flour in the house?”
Atmanand Swami thought to himself, ‘It seems today I will have to swallow dry flour!’ Yet he immediately reflected, ‘If I am to obey the Lord’s divine command, I shall gladly swallow raw flour; though I have no hunger, how can I ever transgress His holy word?’
As Atmanand Swami entertained these inner thoughts, the Omniscient Lord spoke: “Atmanand Swami! Never put absolute trust in the fickle mind. The mind is a master of deceptive illusions; at one moment it conceives this thought, and at another moment it conceives that. If one becomes engrossed in these mental waves, one’s spiritual equilibrium falters; but if one remains a detached observer, the soul realizes itself as completely distinct from the physical body!”
Shriji Maharaj then took wheat flour, blended it with pure ghee and jaggery to make sweet kuler (kasar), formed it into ladoos, and lovingly fed them to Atmanand Swami with His own hands.
Thus, Sadguru Atmanand Swami lived his entire life adhering to Maharaj’s every word to the very letter. Shri Hari Himself frequently praised him, saying that for Atmanand Swami, obeying the Lord’s command was infinitely greater than physical comfort.

Honoring Lakshmiben Sutar of Punadi village, Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami wrote in Bhaktachintamani (Prakaran 116, Verse 61):
“Bhakt Sutar baai Lakhmi, Punadiye Pitambar premi..!
Mavji Lakhdhir Sutar, Malbai Gajod mojaar..!”
(Devotee Lakshmibai Sutar and Pitambar of Punadi were fervent, loving souls; and Mavji, Lakhdhir Sutar, and Malbai of Gajod were also steadfast devotees of the Lord!)
