Manor Bhagat of Piplav and the Kathi Darbars’ Breakfast

Approximately five gaus (about ten miles) from Vadtal lies the quaint village of Piplav. Blessed by the divine fellowship of the holy sadhus, the village was home to many staunch devotees, including Dwij Bhavanishankar, Prabhashankar, Keshavram, Bonji Koli, Hetbai, Jijibai, Lalo Patel, and Kalyan Sutar. In this sacred village also lived Manor Bhagat, an exalted, foremost Ekantik devotee of Shri Hari. Socially and materially of humble means, he was nevertheless foremost in earning the divine grace and pleasure (rajipo) of Shri Hari. Whenever Shri Hari traveled to and from Vadtal, He would graciously halt at Piplav and unfailingly bless Manor Bhagat’s home with His divine darshan. Whenever Shri Hari graced his threshold, Manor Bhagat overflowed with uncontainable joy, reminiscent of Shabari welcoming Bhagwan Shri Ram to her humble cottage.

On one occasion, Shri Hari was traveling on horseback to Vadtal accompanied by noble Kathi Darbars, including Sura Khachar and Somla Khachar. By the time they arrived at Piplav, dusk had set in, so Shri Hari decided to halt for the night at Manor Bhagat’s home. Manor Bhagat lovingly served dinner to Shri Hari and all the devotees. Early next morning at the break of dawn, Shri Hari instructed Naja Jogiya to saddle the horses. Seeing this, Manor Bhagat pleaded with deep affection, “O Maharaj! What is the hurry? Please depart only after partaking in breakfast (shiraman) and having some fresh buttermilk!”
Shriji Maharaj replied, “Bhagat, we must reach Vadtal expeditiously. If we start right on time, we will reach Vadtal well before the midday sun grows harsh!”

Overhearing Shri Hari, Sura Bapu and the other Darbars thought to themselves, “Our stomachs are growling terribly with hunger, and this kind devotee is affectionately urging us to eat breakfast before leaving. Why then is Maharaj in such a rush to depart?”
Deliberating thus, the Kathi Darbars decided among themselves, “Let Maharaj proceed ahead; we shall enjoy our breakfast and follow shortly thereafter.”

Soon, Maharaj mounted His mare, Manki, and departed, accompanied by the revered Mulji Brahmachari. After respectfully seeing Shri Hari off onto the road to Vadtal, Manor Bhagat warmly seated Sura Bapu and the Darbars for breakfast. With profound love, he served each of them thick, sticky rotlas made of coarse chin grain along with intensely sour buttermilk. As soon as the Darbars took their first bite, they found the rotla sticky like gum and so tough that it could scarcely be chewed, while the buttermilk was so sharp and sour that it was impossible even to touch to one’s lips! Meanwhile, Manor Bhagat, brimming with innocent devotion, kept pressing them generously, “Please take more, Bapu! Please have some more!”

Sura Bapu quickly devised a clever escape: “Bhagat! We shall take this breakfast along with us. We will wash our faces at the village lake, enjoy the breakfast there, and then continue our journey.”
Saying this, they packed the rotlas, mounted their horses, and rode off in haste. Upon reaching the village bazaar, they tossed the rotlas to the stray dogs, but even the dogs merely sniffed them and ran away! At the outskirts of Piplav, they poured away the sour buttermilk. Arriving at the lakeside, they quenched their thirst with a few handfuls of water and rode onward toward Vadtal.

Covering the distance of five gaus under the rising sun, they eventually arrived at Vadtal. There, Shri Hari was presiding over a spiritual gathering beneath the shade of an amla tree. The Darbars approached, offered their humble prostrations (pranam), and took their seats. Being the omniscient Antaryami, Shri Hari knew full well that they had arrived famished. With subtle humor, He said to Mulji Brahmachari, “Brahmamuni, all these Darbars have feasted heartily on rich milk and rotla at Manor Bhagat’s home in Piplav! Therefore, make no arrangements for their breakfast.”

The Kathi Darbars were filled with comical dismay, thinking, “Alas! Our stomachs are crying out in sheer hunger, and on top of that, Maharaj is instructing that no food be prepared for us!” Sura Khachar realized, “I must employ some clever wit, otherwise we shall surely starve today!” With that, he took off his turban, stroked his bare head, and called out, “Hey Somla! Look at my head—is there even a single hair left, or has that sour buttermilk caused all of it to fall off?” Seeing this, all the other Darbars took off their turbans as well, inspected each other’s heads, and broke into playful jesting.
Shri Hari inquired with a smile, “Sura Bapu! Why are you all examining each other’s bare heads like that?”
Sura Bapu then candidly narrated the entire humorous episode from start to finish.

Covering His divine lips with a handkerchief, Maharaj burst into hearty laughter: “Sura Bapu! Why didn’t you relish your breakfast? When a wedding procession sets out without the bridegroom, such is the hospitality one receives! You stayed behind, leaving Us for the sake of a tasty meal, so naturally you ended up with sour buttermilk!”
The entire assembly burst into laughter at Shri Hari’s playful banter. Shri Hari then lovingly commanded that a sumptuous breakfast be served to all the Darbars immediately.

Thus, when the Darbars chose to stay behind at Manor Bhagat’s home in Piplav for food rather than accompany Shri Hari, it blossomed into an endearing and joyous divine episode (lila).

Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami has commemorated the blessed devotees of Piplav in Bhaktachintamani (Prakaran 122, Verses 43-45):

“Girdhar Bechar chhe nām, Sutār Kalyān Gangārām..!
Soni Gopāl ādi harijan, vase Piplāv mā pāvan..!!”

  • From the contemplation of the liberated souls in Shri Bhaktachintamani…
