The Brahmin of Maliya and Shriji Maharaj’s Alms
Once, while touring for the propagation of Satsang, Shri Hari and Mulji Brahmachari arrived at the village of Maliya. Maliya is situated on the serene banks of the Machhu River. While walking on the path, both had fasted continuously for two days. As they approached the village, Shri Hari said, “Brahmachari, let us enter this village and ask for alms (bhiksha)!” Hearing this, Mulji Brahmachari humbly submitted, “O Maharaj! You are the supreme nourisher and sustainer of the entire universe, providing food, water, and clothing to every living being in creation. It does not seem befitting for You, the supreme Lord endowed with all divine majesty (aishwarya), to beg for alms!” Shri Hari replied with a smile, “Do not say anything; simply follow behind Us! Today, watch as We personally beg for alms.”
Saying this, Shriji Maharaj and Mulji Brahmachari walked up to the house of a Brahmin in the village to seek alms.
Standing in the courtyard of the Brahmin’s house, Shri Hari called out, “Jai Sachchidanand Prabho Hare!” Hearing the divine call, the Brahmin came out and offered a millet rotla (flatbread) and some pickle as alms. Shri Hari accepted the rotla and pickle in His hands and contemplated that a single rotla would not suffice for both of them. Moreover, Brahmachari had been fasting for two days, and Maharaj could not partake of food without feeding him first. With this thought, Maharaj returned the rotla and pickle to the Brahmin and said, “Our Brahmachari here has also not eaten for two days. He is the preceptor (Guru) of all brahmacharis and an exceptionally pious Brahmin; therefore, We shall dine only after he has eaten.”
The Brahmin householder folded his hands with reverence and said, “In that case, please partake of the rotla and pickle Yourself; for him, I will gladly prepare and serve kuler ladus (sweet balls of roasted millet flour, jaggery, and ghee)!” As the Brahmin turned to go inside, Shri Hari said, “O Gor Maharaj! If you simply provide some millet flour and salt, he will prepare baati with his own hands and eat.”
The Brahmin brought millet flour and salt from inside his home and devoutly offered them to Shri Hari as alms.
Taking the alms, Shri Hari and Brahmachariji walked to the banks of the Machhu River. They bathed in the pristine river waters and performed their evening prayers (sandhya). Afterward, Shri Hari dined on the rotla and pickle received as alms from the Brahmin. Brahmachariji had fetched clean, filtered water from a virda (a fresh water pit dug in the sandy riverbed), and Shri Hari rinsed His mouth and drank the pure water. At that time, since there was no fire or means to bake baati, Brahmachariji simply mixed the raw millet flour with water and salt, stirred it, and drank it.
After washing their hands and faces, as dusk fell, they sat together in spiritual conversation. Mulji Brahmachari asked, “O Maharaj! What spiritual destination (gati) will that Brahmin attain who gave us alms today?”
Hearing this question, Shri Hari was immensely pleased and replied, “He has fed both of us. Recognizing your divine sanctity even more than Mine, that noble Brahmin was eager to prepare sweet ladus for you. By the virtue of recognizing that divine glory, We shall personally take him to Our eternal Akshardham at the time of his passing.”
In the course of time, when the Brahmin of Maliya reached his final moments, Shriji Maharaj arrived in divine form accompanied by Mulji Brahmachari to escort his soul to Akshardham. Conversing joyfully and glorifying Shri Hari before all onlookers, that blessed Brahmin attained the highest abode of Akshardham.
