Radhabai and Dahya’s Mother of Barwala and Shriji Maharaj
Once, Shriji Maharaj, accompanied by prominent Kathi Darbars including Sura Bapu and devoted attendants (parshads) including Bhaguji, was traveling on horseback from Vadtal toward Gadhpur. On the outskirts of the village of Barwala, along the banks of the Utavali River, they halted to water their horses.
It was morning, and the sight of that enchanting, divine persona riding gracefully along the riverbed captivated the hearts of the village water-bearers (paniharis) who had come to fetch water. Shri Hari was adorned in splendid golden attire, the fluttering crest (chhoglu) of His turban, a fragrant saffron tilak upon His fair cheeks with a radiant round kumkum chandlo in the center enhancing His divine charm. With every rhythmic movement of Shri Hari’s hands, the ornamental tassel on the horse’s reins swung gracefully.
At that very moment, Radhaben Luhana and the mother of Dahyabhai Sutar from Barwala had arrived at the river to fetch water. The moment they beheld Shriji Maharaj amidst the circle of horses, an otherworldly peace descended upon their souls, and, utterly overwhelmed by profound divine love, their minds became completely riveted upon His enchanting murti.
Once the horses had quenched their thirst, Shriji Maharaj and the entourage set out toward Gadhpur. Beholding this divine departure, both women left their water pots right by the riverbank; drawn by the magnetic pull of their loving devotion, their minds followed the very direction in which Shri Hari was riding!
With their consciousness completely absorbed in Shriji Maharaj, they walked briskly, unknowingly covering a staggering distance of about fifty-two (52) kilometers to reach Gadhpur! At that time, Radhaben had a nursing infant daughter merely five months old, yet in her transcendent absorption, she harbored no worldly worry whatsoever! Arriving at Dada Khachar’s Darbar in Gadhpur, both women walked right into the sacred gathering and sat before Maharaj!
At that moment, the holy discourse of the Shrimad Bhagavata was being recited before Shriji Maharaj. When the narration touched upon the boundless, unalloyed love of the Gopis, Shri Hari’s dear companion Sura Khachar asked, “O Maharaj! In this age of Kaliyuga, where could one find women possessing such selfless and unreserved love for God as the Gopis had?” Upon hearing this question, Shriji Maharaj instantly responded, “Devotees possessing love even greater than that exist in our Satsang today!” Saying this, Shri Hari cast a compassionate glance toward the two women and gestured with His hand.
Receiving Maharaj’s gesture, both women stood up in the assembly. In the presence of all, Shriji Maharaj inquired about their names, village, and the reason for their coming here. It was only at that moment that the two women from Barwala regained bodily consciousness and realized where they had arrived! Until then, their mental focus had remained immovably riveted upon Maharaj’s divine form!
Kahi em krupaa drashti dhari, beya baaine ubhi kari..!
Puchhya teonaa gaam ne naam, puchhyu aavyaa tanun ahi kaam..!
Kahi baaiye badhi vaat, kahyaa naam ne naat ne jaat..!
Bhaalyaa tamne ame Bhagwaan, tethi bhuli gayaa tan bhaan..!
Bedaan mukyaa chhe nadi tane teer, aavyaa neerakhva shyaam shareer..!
Kahe Raadhaane Shrihari tyaare, tran baalkio chhe tamaare..!

Suni boliyaa te Raadhaabaai, tame rakshaa kari garbh maai..!
Tame rakshan karsho ja tem, chintaa chittmaan raakhie kem ?..!
— Harililamrut Kalash 8, Vishram 55, Verses 57 to 75
(Shri Hari cast His merciful gaze and asked them to stand, inquiring of their names, native village, and reason for traveling here. The women narrated everything, sharing their names and lineage: “O Bhagwan! The moment we beheld You, we forgot all consciousness of our physical bodies! Leaving our water pots at the river’s edge, we followed You solely to behold Your divine dark-hued form!” Shri Hari then said to Radha, “You have three young daughters, and one is an infant of merely five months; she will cry bitterly—who will protect her?” Hearing this, Radhabai replied with unshakeable faith, “O Lord, You who protected her in the mother’s womb shall surely protect her now; why should we harbor any anxiety in our hearts?”)
All the devotees seated in the assembly were spellbound with amazement! Pleased beyond measure with their supreme devotion and deep spiritual realization, Shriji Maharaj commended both women. He entrusted them to the loving care of revered sankhyayogi women disciples, Laduba and Jivuba, treated them to sanctified thal prasadi, and arranged a covered bullock cart (veldu) to escort them safely and honorably back to Barwala. Thus, Radhaben and the revered mother of Dahyabhai Sutar returned home from Gadhpur.
Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami has commemorated these staunch devotees in Shri Bhaktachintamani (Chapter 115, Verses 13–14):
Vipra Vaadhji Viro Vanik, Vashraam Luvaano chhe ek..!
Sau Devji Narsai naam, ehaadi jan Barwaale gaam..!!
