Kanjibhagat of Akha and Shriji Maharaj
In the supremely sanctified (mahaprasadibhut) villages of Piplana and Akha, Shri Hari once resided for six continuous months, manifesting simultaneously in two divine forms among all the saints and devotees. Bound by the pure love of the devotees in both villages, Shri Hari visited them frequently. In the village of Akha, there lived a twenty-year-old youth named Kanjibhagat. In his devoted heart, an uninterrupted stream of divine love for Shri Hari flowed ceaselessly. By the boundless grace of Shri Hari, he was completely untouched by worldly flaws or anxieties. Every night, he went to guard his farm (vadi). There, immersed in the serene silence of the fields, as he turned his prayer beads (mala), he would become so profoundly absorbed in the divine form of Shri Hari that he often lost all track of time.
One evening, as he was setting out for the farm, his elderly mother called out, “Son Kanji! I have grown old now, and we have milch animals—four to five cows and two to three buffaloes. In the early morning, my hands no longer have the strength to churn the earthen curd pots (goras na valona). Therefore, please return home early every morning at dawn, churn the buttermilk, take your morning meal (shiraaman), and then head back to the farm.” The young Kanji replied obediently, “Very well, mother, I will return home early in the morning.”
Every night at the farm, while keeping watch over the crops, Kanjibhagat turned his mala and chanted loudly, calling upon Shri Hari with the divine dhun of “Swaminarayan… Swaminarayan…!” He sang devotional kirtans in a resonant voice. Each morning, waking up early at the farm, he bathed, completed his daily puja-paath and mansi puja, and only then returned home.
One night, sitting with closed eyes and turning his mala, Kanjibhagat became so deeply engrossed in the divine form of Shri Hari that he was entirely oblivious to the passage of time. When dawn broke, his mother woke up and began to worry: “Why has Kanji not returned from the field at the usual time? The auspicious hour for churning the curd is passing by, yet he has not arrived. O Bhagwan! Please send Kanji home quickly so the day’s chores may begin!”
Touched by Kanjibhagat’s deep devotional absorption and his mother’s earnest plea, the affectionate protector of devotees, Bhaktavatsal Shri Hari, instantly assumed the form of Kanjibhagat and appeared at the doorway. He knocked and called out, “Mother! O Mother, please open the door!”
His mother opened the gate and began scolding him affectionately, “You are so late today! Were you fast asleep at the farm? I got tired of waiting for you! Now hurry up and start churning the buttermilk; soon everyone will arrive to collect their milk and buttermilk!” As she scolded her son, she continued attending to the morning household tasks.
In the form of Kanji, Shri Hari smiled gently and said, “Mother, it did get late today. From tomorrow, I will be careful and come right on time!” Churning the pots amidst their sweet, affectionate chatter, the curd was churned in no time. That day, twice the usual amount of butter was produced! While Kanji was filling the vessels with fresh buttermilk, his mother served him breakfast: piping hot bajra rotlo, a generous mound of fresh butter, spiced methi chillies, and curd mixed with jaggery in a bronze bowl (tanhali). Sitting on the veranda (osari), Shriji Maharaj lovingly relished the morning meal. After finishing and helping wrap up the chores, He took His mother’s leave and set off toward the farm.
Meanwhile, back at the farm, the sun had already risen high. Kanjibhagat emerged from his deep trance and meditation, only to realize that a great deal of time had passed and he was exceptionally late. He rushed home in haste. Upon reaching, he pleaded, “Mother! Forgive me, I am very late today.”
His mother looked at him in sheer astonishment and said, “Kanji, why have you returned from the farm again? Did you forget something? Just a little while ago, you churned the pots, had your breakfast, and left for the field!”
Bewildered, Kanjibhagat replied, “Mother, I have only just arrived home right now! I was turning my mala and became so absorbed that I lost all track of time. I only awoke after sunrise.”
The mother exclaimed, “Son, if you didn’t come, then who churned all those pots of curd? And I personally served you the meal with my own hands!”
Tears of profound joy welled up in Kanjibhagat’s eyes. With a voice trembling with emotion, he exclaimed, “O Mother! That was none other than Shriji Maharaj Himself, who came in my place! I was completely lost in His bhajan. Oh Lord, how merciful You are! Out of pure love for humble souls like us, what divine forms You assume…!”
Both mother and son were overwhelmed with devotion as they partook of the sanctified remnants (prasadi) from the plate and bowl in which Shri Hari, in Kanji’s guise, had taken His meal.
Throughout his lifetime, Kanjibhagat would point out with immense reverence to everyone, “In this very kitchen, Shri Hari pulled the churning ropes, and upon this veranda, He relished breakfast!” Living in constant divine ecstasy and meditating uninterruptedly upon Shri Hari, he attained the supreme status of Akshardham.
