Nandubhai of Umreth and Shriji Maharaj

In the town of Umreth lived Nandubhai, a royal minister and a profoundly devoted disciple possessing unswerving faith in Shri Hari. When Shri Hari once miraculously caused Hariya—an eight-year-old mute boy of Umreth—to recite sacred Vedic hymns (richas), the entire town gathered to witness the wonder. Nandubhai was among the crowd. Witnessing this extraordinary divine episode, he developed absolute, resolute conviction in the supreme divinity of Shri Hari. He held great spiritual love and reverence for Nirvikalpanand Swami. Whenever the swami visited Umreth during his spiritual travels, Nandubhai would sit beside him and engage in devotional Satsang discourses.

Later, when Shriji Maharaj in Gadhada openly praised Sadguru Muktanand Swami for triumphing in the prestigious scriptural debate in Vadodara, Nirvikalpanand Swami’s ego was severely hurt. Consumed by jealousy, he muttered bitterly, “Maharaj showers praises on uneducated Muktanand who merely recites poems of Akho! What flaw is there in me? I could have easily won such a debate myself. I am thoroughly versed in the Vedas and Puranas. This Maharaj lacks even an ounce of discretion!”

Blinded by spite and pride, he eventually defected from the Satsang fellowship and traveled from village to village, poisoning the minds of devotees who respected him: “This Swaminarayan is no God at all! Why should anyone worship Him?”

When he arrived in Umreth and uttered these words to Nandubhai, Nandubhai was overcome with righteous fury. Trembling with sacred indignation, he retorted sharply, “You dare blaspheme the very supreme Lord whose holy worship incinerates the sins of millions of births and purifies the inner conscience! You have completely lost your senses. Leave this instant, and never dare step foot within the boundaries of our village again!” Saying this, he summoned the villagers and drove Nirvikalpanand Swami out of the town.

Following this incident, when Nandubhai traveled to Vadtal for Shri Hari’s darshan, Shri Hari extolled his resolute conviction before the entire assembly. Commending his unflinching faith in Vachanamrut Vadtal 12, Shri Hari proclaimed: “A devotee who perceives no fault in God, regardless of the divine actions (charitras) He may perform, and possesses complete conviction accompanied with the realization of His glory—such a devotee should be known to have become completely fearless.” Shri Hari was immensely pleased with him.

By Shri Hari’s grace, Nandubhai remained constantly absorbed in devotional remembrance day and night. On one occasion, he traveled to Godhra on royal business. On his journey home, night fell while he was still en route. Entering a dense wilderness, he lost his bearings in the pitch-black darkness. Unable to see anything, he walked forward, continuously chanting Shri Hari’s holy name. After some distance, he noticed the faint, flickering light of a distant oil lamp. Guided by the glow, Nandubhai approached the source and found a small outpost of soldiers conversing together. The soldiers welcomed him warmly and reassured him, “We are government guards stationed in this outpost. Be at ease, rest here tonight, and resume your journey at daybreak.” They laid out a comfortable cot for him, affectionately served him sukhadi (sweet wheat delicacy) and pickles, tied his horse, and provided fresh green fodder. As Nandubhai lay down to rest, one of the attendants gently massaged his feet until he fell asleep.

At the crack of dawn, the soldiers gently woke him, pointed out the clear path leading to his village, and saw him off.

Nandubhai mounted his horse and rode towards Umreth. Along the road, he encountered several villagers who asked in surprise where he had come from so early in the morning through such a treacherous jungle. Nandubhai narrated how he had safely spent the night at a government outpost along the forest trail. Hearing this, the villagers exclaimed in disbelief, “There is no government outpost or camp anywhere in that dense jungle! Come, let us inspect the place!” When they returned to the exact spot, all they found was the horse’s dung and scattered fodder left behind by his horse. There was no cot, no tent, no lamp, and no soldiers whatsoever.

Overcome with profound awe and devotion, Nandubhai immediately fell to the earth, offering repeated prostrations (dandvat pranam). With tears flowing profusely, he cried out, “My beloved Master, Shri Hari, personally came into this desolate wilderness to protect me! When I was lost, He showed me the way, fed me with His own hands, and even pressed my tired feet through the night! O Lord of compassion, ignorant as I am, I failed to recognize You!”

From that very spot, Nandubhai rode straight to Vadtal and fell at Shri Hari’s lotus feet in prostration after prostration. Weeping tears of gratitude, he choked, “O Prabhu! You came in disguise to rescue me in my hour of peril!”

Shri Hari smiled tenderly and said, “Every day in your manasi puja, you lovingly offer Me meals and massage My lotus feet. When you belong to Us, could We not serve you for even a single day? In truth, We have assumed this mortal body solely for the protection and salvation of Our dear devotees.”

With these words of boundless love, Shri Hari gave Nandubhai sanctified food (prasad) from His thal and sent him safely home to Umreth with His divine blessings.

Thus, Shri Hari personally protected His beloved devotee in the darkness of the dense forest at the critical hour.

  • From Purushratno of Shri Sahajanandi Bhaktisagar

Sadguru Shri Nishkulanand Swami, commemorating Nandubhai in verse 39 of Prakaran 121 in ‘Shri Bhaktachintamani’, writes:

“Bhakta Umrethe ati sārā, premījana Prabhuji ne pyārā..! Dvij Ruparam Narbherām, Nand Nandlāl doy nām..!!”

(Meaning: In the town of Umreth reside sublime devotees who are filled with divine love and dearly beloved to the Lord. Among the Brahmin devotees are Ruparam and Narbheram, and both Nand [Nandubhai] and Nandlal are also cherished devotees of God.)
