Govindbhai Patel of Karjisan and the Rangotsav of Machhiav

In the village of Karjisan in the Dandhavya region lived noble, exalted Ekantik devotees including Vakhatobhai, Nanobhai, Jadavjibhai, Mithibai, and Govindbhai Patel.

Once, Shri Hari graciously visited the village of Machhiav, the home of Faiba. Yielding to Faiba’s fervent love and humble prayers, Shri Hari stayed at her Darbargadh (royal residence) for seven days along with the sants and devotees, celebrating a magnificent and divine Rangotsav on the auspicious occasion of Hutashani (Holi).

On the evening of the fourth day, Agaroji and Amaroji lovingly adorned Shri Hari with an ornate brocade tunic (kinkhab dagli) and golden trousers (surwal). They tied an exquisite ceremonial sash (shelu) around His head and draped a fine shawl across His shoulders. Both brothers performed arti with profound devotion, had His divine darshan, and reverently placed His lotus feet upon their chest and head. The sants sang devotional Godi hymns, and all the devotees bowed at Shri Hari’s sacred feet. Shri Hari clapped His hands with divine delight and joyfully announced, “Tomorrow we shall celebrate the vibrant Rangotsav of Hutashani! We have instructed the Himalayas, so it will not feel cold at all tomorrow.”

At that time, the supreme devotee Govindbhai Patel had arrived from the village of Karjisan. Beholding the blessed spiritual fortune of the devotees, he bowed with folded hands and pleaded, “O Lord! In tomorrow’s auspicious festival of Hutashani, please grant me the divine opportunity to sponsor a feast of sugar-sweetened laddus (khand na ladu)!”

The following day, on the joyous occasion of Hutashani, large reservoirs (kund) were filled with water and colored solutions, and natural dyes brought specially from Ahmedabad were made ready. Shriji Maharaj, tying a sash around His waist on the elevated pavilion of the Darbargadh, stepped forward enthusiastically to play with colors. Ten large wicker platters filled with mounds of radiant gulal powder were presented. Shri Hari scooped up generous fistfuls of gulal with both hands and showered them playfully upon the sants and devotees. Sants and devotees rejoiced in mutual love, filling the sky with radiant clouds of vibrant colors. After playing joyfully for a long time, the celebration reached its peak with streams of fragrant saffron kesuda (tesu flower) water and joyous showers of gulal. Seeing the supreme Lord, Purna Purushottam Narayan, immersed in the festival of colors with His devotees in the Darbargadh, celestial deities descended in their heavenly chariots (vimanas) to behold this divine spectacle and sounded celestial kettle-drums (dundubhi) in adoration.

After rejoicing for a long time, Shri Hari proceeded with the sants and devotees to the village lake for a holy bath. After bathing and dressing in fresh garments, He returned to His lodging. Govindbhai immediately approached with reverence and prayed, “O Maharaj! The thal is ready; please grace us by partaking of the sanctified feast.”

As Shri Hari sat upon a low wooden pedestal (bajoth), a grand spread featuring four varieties of delicacies was offered like an Annakut. As Shri Hari partook of the meal, He showered praises upon Govindbhai, remarking, “This Govindbhai has dedicated his entire life and wealth to the service of God and His holy sants. We have celebrated fourteen grand samaiyas (festivals) at his home in Karjisan, yet his faith remains ever-new and steadfast!” Shri Hari ate heartily, performed achaman (ritual sipping of water), and then walked over to serve the row of seated sants personally. Calling out affectionately, “Layo ladu… mahapurusho, layo koi ladu!” (“Take laddus… O great souls, take more laddus!”), He personally served the dining sants seven times.

Having served the sants, Shri Hari washed His hands and relaxed upon the cot (dholiyo). Govindbhai reverently performed His puja, offered valuable garments and ornaments, and pressed Maharaj’s divine lotus feet against his forehead and chest. Overflowing with divine bliss, Shri Hari placed both His holy hands on Govindbhai’s head, bestowing His supreme grace and blessings upon him.

Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami, commemorating the liberated devotee Shri Govindbhai Patel of Karjisan in verses 68–69 of Prakaran 119 in ‘Shri Bhaktachintamani’, writes:

“Kanbi bhakta chhe Bhavanidās, taji Kasaljie juthi ās..! Govidji Jādavjibhai, bāiomā chhe Mithibāi bāi..!! Dvijabhakta motā Nānobhāi, jeni kahi na jāy motāi..! Kshatriyabhakta chhe Vakhatobhāi, eh bhakta Karjisanmāi..!!”

(Meaning: Among the Patidar devotees is Bhavanidas, and Kasalji has renounced all false worldly desires. Govindji and Jadavjibhai are sublime devotees, and among the women is the pious Mithibai. Among the Brahmin devotees is the great Nanobhai, whose spiritual glory is indescribable. The Kshatriya devotee is Vakhatobhai—all these exalted devotees reside in the holy village of Karjisan.)
