Surchand Sheth of Bhadreshi and Shriji Maharaj
The village of Bhadreshi is situated approximately 14 kilometers from Surendranagar. In this village lived three brothers of an esteemed Vaishnav merchant family: Amichand Sheth, Surchand Sheth, and Sundarji Sheth. Among them, Surchand Sheth was renowned throughout the entire family for his exceptional intellect, shrewdness, and tactical brilliance. Through the divine association of sants, Surchand Sheth became a dedicated devotee of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. In those days, there was considerable opposition to Satsang in the Saubhir (Jhalawad) region; nevertheless, with his distinctive diplomatic skill and determination, Surchand Sheth tactfully countered the detractors and steered them into the fold of Satsang! For this resolute nature and steadfast adherence to his ideals, Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami described him as ‘svachhand’ (independent-minded and firmly resolute) in the sacred scripture Shri Bhaktachintamani.
At that time, Bhadreshi was a prosperous town, and this Vaishnav family enjoyed great respect. In his youth, Surchand Sheth took an interest in learning the art of operating a jantarado (a traditional sling/stone-bow capable of launching projectiles with immense velocity). The jantarado was commonly used by hunters to hunt wild animals. The family strongly opposed a member of a devout Vaishnav household handling such an aggressive weapon. Yet, true to his headstrong and determined nature, Surchand Sheth mastered the art of aiming and launching stones with unerring precision. He assured his family that he would never misuse the weapon for harming innocent life—illustrating his self-willed and confident character from early youth.
On one occasion, a notorious band of outlaws (baharvatiyas / dacoits) sent a warning message to Bhadreshi stating that they would raid and pillage the village on a designated day. The villagers were gripped with terror. At that critical moment, the young Surchand Sheth reassured everyone, declaring: “I shall drive away all those outlaws single-handedly!” True to his word, on the appointed day, Surchand Sheth climbed a hill overlooking the path from which the bandits were expected, equipped with his jantarado and a pouch full of stones. When the bandits appeared in the distance on horseback in broad daylight, Surchand Sheth loaded a stone into his sling, drew his aim, and launched it. Flying with the velocity of a bullet, the stone struck a bandit’s turban and knocked it clean off his head without injuring his skull!
With his next unerring shot, he shattered the barrel of another outlaw’s rifle. One after another, turbans flew off heads, gun barrels broke, and ammunition pouches slung across shoulders were knocked away by his precise shots. Struck from afar by an invisible marksman with impossible accuracy, the bandits were thrown into sheer panic. Fearing for their lives, the outlaws turned around and fled with their tails between their legs. Thus, the master marksman Surchand Sheth routed the entire band of raiders without shedding a single drop of blood or killing anyone!
- From the published work of Punit Maharaj
Later, joyful tidings reached the village that Bhagwan Swaminarayan, accompanied by a large entourage (sangh) of sants and devotees, was to visit Bhadreshi. Filled with devotional delight, the townspeople eagerly prepared to welcome Shri Hari with a grand procession (samaiyu).
Shriji Maharaj arrived in Bhadreshi from Sitapur along with the assembly of sants. Under Surchand Sheth’s leadership and meticulous coordination, the devotees gave Bhagwan Swaminarayan an elaborate and jubilant welcome. Milk was collected from ten surrounding villages, and with the active assistance and supervision of Gosaiji, a prominent local leader, a sumptuous feast was prepared and served to all the pilgrims in the sangh!
Sheth Surchandbhāi tyān-nā, Amichand Sundarji nānā…! Trane Sheth sagā bhāi kahu, buddhivanta ne viveki bahu..! Lakhyā lakshana shāstra purāne, santa asanta samaji jāne..! Tethi thai pragatmā preet, chotyum Prabhu charanmā chit..! Sāru samāiyu sajine lāvyā, poorajano sāmā sahu āvyā..! Surchand Shethe nij gher, āpyo utāro tyā rudi per..! Sevā kare sakutumb sahu, karyā Prabhune prasanna bahu..! Āvyo umanga antar shuddha, dasha gāmnu mangāvyu doodha..! Jamyā santa ane Shri Mahārāj, jamyā satsangi sahu samāj! Moti parove veejmā jevu, karyu kāma Gosāiye tevu..!
(Meaning: Surchand Sheth, along with his younger brothers Amichand and Sundarji, were three full brothers—endowed with great wisdom and humility. Possessing the noble virtues described in scriptures and discerning true sants from the unsaintly, their hearts became deeply attached to the lotus feet of the manifest Lord. The townspeople organized a grand welcoming procession. Surchand Sheth provided gracious accommodation at his residence, where the entire family served the Lord with deep love and pleased Him immensely. With pure joy, milk was gathered from ten villages, and Shri Maharaj, the sants, and the entire fellowship dined blissfully. Like stringing a pearl during a flash of lightning, Gosaiji accomplished this magnificent service with breathtaking speed!)
- From Shri Purushottam Charitra Pushpamala, Pushpa 20
During that period, Surchand Sheth also managed the state administration (diwanship) for the ruler of Seetha village. Because he was an ardent devotee of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, jealous rivals and conspirators fabricated false charges and had Surchand Sheth’s family imprisoned. Facing this adversity, Surchand Sheth relied on his staunch faith in Maharaj, brilliant intellect, and heroic courage. He systematically dismantled every false allegation, exposed the conspirators, proved his family’s innocence, and successfully secured their honorable release.
- From Shri Hari Charitra Chintamani, Part 3, Discourse 299
Today, the descendants of Bhaktaraj Surchand Sheth reside in cities such as Surendranagar and Mumbai, upholding an exemplary life of Satsang. Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami, in Prakaran 117, verse 6 of the sacred Shri Bhaktachintamani, commemorates Surchand Sheth of Bhadreshi with reverence:
Bhakta Bhadreshvariye svachhand, Sheth Amichand Surchand..! Vaishya Sundarji avichal, motā bhakta mana nirmal..!!
(Meaning: In Bhadreshi resided those steadfast devotees of resolute will—Sheth Amichand and Surchand; and the unwavering merchant Sundarji, a great devotee of pure and noble heart.)
