Construction of Piplana Mandir and Sadguru Balamukunddas Swami
The sacred village of Piplana, located on the banks of the Ozat River, is a deeply revered holy site marked by the divine first meeting of Bhagwan Nilkanth Varni and Sadguru Ramanand Swami. At this auspicious prasadi site in Piplana, Sadguru Balamukunddas Swami was overseeing the construction of a Hari Mandir (shrine). The assembly of sadhus along with dedicated devotees lived on-site in a modest tin-roofed shed, performing masonry work and manual labor with their own hands. Every morning and evening, Swami conducted uplifting spiritual discourses (katha-varta) to nurture their devotion. Sadguru Balamukunddas Swami himself stayed right there alongside the sadhus, actively participating in the seva.
During that time, Shri Mansukhbhai Choksi, a resident of Surat who held a prestigious post as a Munsif (judicial magistrate) in the judiciary, took a summer leave from his duties to embark on a pilgrimage of holy mandirs, arriving at Junagadh. At the Junagadh Mandir, Mansukhbhai lovingly had darshan of Shri Radha Raman Dev, offered prostrations (dandavat pranam) to Narayandas Swami in the sadhus’ quarters, and expressed his heartfelt wish to have darshan of Sadguru Balamukunddas Swami. Narayandas Swami promptly dispatched a messenger, and Balamukunddas Swami arrived the following day. Mansukhbhai met Swami with deep affection and prostrated before him. Swami said, “Mansukhbhai, since you have journeyed this far for darshan, extend your stay by a few days and perform the panchtirthi pilgrimage of Shri Hari’s sacred prasadi sites across Sorath.” Mansukhbhai replied, “Swami, only a few days remain of my vacation, but since a great spiritual luminary like yourself is asking, we will certainly accompany you for darshan at least up to Loj and Mangrol!”
Mansukhbhai traveled with Swami and arrived in Piplana. After taking darshan of all the holy sites within the village where Shri Hari had set His lotus feet, and offering veneration to the sacred picture-image (chitra-pratima) enshrined by the sadhus within their simple shed, Mansukhbhai sat beside Balamukunddas Swami. Swami narrated profound discourses highlighting the boundless divine glory of Shri Hari.
After a short while, as the afternoon sun rose higher, the modest shed with its metal roof became intensely hot. Mansukhbhai was completely drenched in perspiration. Observing the severe heat along with the persistent nuisance of flies and mosquitoes in the open space, Mansukhbhai humbly pleaded with Swami, “Swami, it is overwhelmingly hot inside this small shed, and there is immense discomfort from flies and mosquitoes in this open area. Until the new mandir is completed, please let us rent a house in the village so that all the sadhus can stay comfortably. Whatever rent and expenses are incurred, I shall bear them all. Moreover, your body has advanced in age; rather than straining your physical body in strenuous construction work, please hire laborers and artisans. I will gladly pay for all the expenses.”
Hearing Mansukhbhai’s earnest proposal, Balamukunddas Swami replied with divine conviction, “This is the sacred ground where Shri Hari and Gurudev Ramanand Swami met for the very first time. It was right here that He was bestowed the auspicious name ‘Sahajanand Swami’. On this sacred soil, no matter how much we exhaust our physical body in divine service, it will never be enough! All the sadhus and devotees are pleasing Shri Hari by offering physical devotion with their own hands. As much as my body permits, I too must surely serve. When noble devotees like you offer their hard-earned wealth to build the Hari Mandir, rendering selfless service with our body and mind is our true devotion. Furthermore, Shriji Maharaj is immensely pleased when Hari Mandirs are constructed with the dedicated physical labor of His devotees. It is with this profound understanding of divine glory that we inspire everyone to engage in seva.”
Upon hearing these words brimming with supreme glory and spiritual wisdom, Munsif Saheb Mansukhbhai Choksi was overwhelmed with profound reverence and awe. Rising to his feet, he began offering continuous prostrations (dandavat) at the holy feet of Swami right then and there.
