Amarshibhai Khatri of Halvad and His Unflinching Pride in Satsang
In the town of Halvad lived Amarshibhai Khatri, a devoted and loving follower blessed with extraordinary conviction and spiritual pride (khumari) in Satsang. Amarshibhai was very prosperous and comfortable in his worldly affairs. At his own personal expense, he frequently organized and sponsored pilgrimage groups (sanghs) of devotees from Halvad to visit Gadhada for the divine darshan of Shriji Maharaj. Staying in Gadhada with the fellow devotees, Amarshibhai would enthusiastically render all kinds of humble services. He visited the sants at their respective quarters, sat at their holy feet to listen to spiritual discourses, and often delighted Maharaj in the assembly with his witty and affectionate humor.
Once, after having darshan of Maharaj in Gadhada, Amarshibhai Khatri was returning to Halvad on foot with the pilgrims’ sangh. Along the way, the group halted at a village assembly square (choro) to rest. A spiritual discourse on sacred scriptures was being delivered at the square. During the narration, the speaker proclaimed: “The divine abode of God is unimaginably distant and extremely arduous to reach! How could a lowly, mortal soul ever have the capability to reach God’s abode or come into the presence of God?” Hearing this, Amarshibhai stood up with immense spiritual vigor and pride. Challenging the assembly in front of all the listening villagers, he patted his chest proudly and declared: “I am returning right from the presence of God Himself! If anyone among you desires to meet God, come along with us, and we shall introduce you to God right away!”
The villagers and the narrator were left utterly astounded, staring at him in disbelief. Standing tall, he proclaimed: “I have surrendered to the manifest Supreme Lord, Bhagwan Swaminarayan! By His manifest divine power, thousands of ordinary souls like me effortlessly attain samadhi (spiritual trance), travel to God’s divine abodes, and at the time of departure, bid farewell by speaking joyfully that they are departing for God’s abode, shedding their mortal bodies with ease!” Hearing such unwavering conviction, deep faith, and profound spiritual confidence, everyone present was left spellbound.
On another occasion, Amarshibhai traveled to Gadhpur with the sangh of Halvad devotees to behold Shri Hari. Everyone bathed in the holy waters of the river Ghela. Arriving at the Darbargadh, each devotee lovingly worshipped Shriji Maharaj in turn. Amarshibhai also offered prostrations (dandvat pranam) to Shriji Maharaj, applied a sacred kumkum tilak on His fair cheek, and reverently placed an offering of 300 rupees at His lotus feet. Touching his head to Shriji Maharaj’s divine feet, he felt utterly blessed.
At that time, Amarshibhai had reached middle age but had no children. With his characteristic wit and affectionate frankness, he addressed Maharaj: “O Maharaj! When this devotee of Yours grows old, he will need a helping hand to assist him in sitting and standing! You surely have no shortage of souls in Your creation! Why not toss one soul toward this devotee so that he may serve him in his old age? What loss will it be to You?”
In the midst of the entire assembly, Amarshibhai delivered this plea with such delightful comedic timing and expressive gestures of his hands that Shri Hari and all the senior sants burst into laughter! Maharaj was immensely pleased with him and affectionately placed both His blessing hands upon Amarshibhai’s head.
The pilgrims stayed in Gadhada for a few days, absorbing divine bliss through kirtan and devotion, before returning to Halvad. Although Amarshibhai’s destiny (prarabdha) held no provision for offspring, Shriji Maharaj altered his destiny and blessed him with four sons over time! Their descendants remain faithfully devoted to Satsang even today.
In his old age, once his sons grew up, Amarshibhai entrusted all worldly household responsibilities to them. He dedicated himself entirely to the holy company of sants (sant-samagam) and uninterrupted devotion to God. For this reason, Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami praised him with the words: “Amarshiye karyo jag zer” (Amarshibhai treated worldly pleasures as poison). Living in the world, he remained untouched by worldly attachments, just like a lotus blossom in water.
In the sacred scripture Shri Bhaktachintamani, Prakaran 117, verse 21, Nishkulanand Swami commemorates him: “Soni bhakta Nāgara Kubera, Amarshiye karyo jagzer..! Ehādi bijā jana apāra, vase Halvad gāma mozhāra..!!” (Meaning: Nagar Kuber Soni was a great devotee, and Amarshibhai considered the world as bitter as poison. Many other noble devotees of God reside within the village of Halvad.)
- From the remembrance of the liberated souls in Shri Bhaktachintamani…
