Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami’s Renunciation and Detachment

Once early in the morning, Vairagya Murti (embodiment of detachment) Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami was passing by the outskirts of Botad village along with a group of sadhus on their way to Vadtal. At the time of their morning prayers, all the sadhus bathed at a well outside the village and performed their morning puja right there. Around the same time, Muktaraj Shivlal Sheth happened to visit the well along with some villagers. Spotting Nishkulanand Swami and the sadhus from a short distance, he hurried towards Swami. Shivlal Sheth offered devout prostrations (dandvat pranam) to Swami and all the sadhus, and with earnest insistence, took them to his home.

With deep devotion, Shivlal Sheth arranged for biranj (a rich, sweet saffron rice dish) to be lovingly cooked by the sadhus for Thakorji’s thaal and the sadhus’ meal. After the thaal was offered to Thakorji, Swami sat in the line (pankti) with the sadhus to dine. Shivlal Sheth and other devotees of Botad sat a short distance away to enjoy the divine darshan of the assembly. When the sadhus served biranj into Swami’s plate, the ascetic Nishkulanand Swami addressed himself, saying, “Eat, Nishkulanand, eat! You have great affection for the great Lord, so now you will not be able to forsake this sweet attachment… Come on, eat, Nishkulanand, eat!”

He repeated this two or three times, yet he could not bring himself to put even a single morsel of the sweet dish into his mouth. Discerning Swami’s intense spirit of renunciation and detachment, Shivlal Sheth folded his hands and prayed, “Swami, please eat whatever pleases you!” Thereafter, a simple millet flatbread (jowar rotlo) was prepared for Swami, which he gladly ate, but he did not touch a single bite of the rich biranj.

Later, when Shri Hari appointed Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami as the mahant of Dholera temple, one morning Swami sat on his seat performing his daily puja. During the puja, he had offered five grapes as naivedya to Thakorji. Upon completing the puja, Swami stood up and consumed those prasad offerings.

At that time, the elderly town chieftain, Nyal Sheth, was sitting nearby witnessing Swami’s holy puja. Seeing Swami partake of the grapes, Nyal Sheth thought to himself, “If any of my wealth or belongings could be used in the worship of such an exalted saint, my wealth will attain its true purpose.” Thinking thus, he said to his son Muljibhai, “Mulji! Go immediately and bring a fine basket (pado) of fresh green grapes from the market; we will present them to Swami to offer to Thakorji during his daily puja!”

Muljibhai immediately went, procured a fine basket of fresh grapes, and handed it to his father Nyal Sheth. Nyal Sheth approached Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami and presented the basket of grapes for use in his worship.

Seeing the basket of grapes, Swami immediately called out to his disciple, Morarchandas Swami, saying, “Morarchan, bring my puja bag (zoli)!” When Swami received the bag, he took out the small prasad container, handed it to Morarchandas Swami, and cast away the five grape seeds into the courtyard. Nishkulanand Swami then said, “Nyal Sheth, you saw me eating grapes and therefore you brought an entire basket of grapes, didn’t you?! Now, this body shall never be fed a single grape again!”

Witnessing Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami’s fierce and unyielding vairagya (detachment), Nyal Sheth reverently took back the basket of grapes.
