The Mahant of Bilkha and the Grace of Gunatitanand Swami

Once, Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami set out towards Vadtal accompanied by a congregation (sangh) of around one hundred and fifty to two hundred sadhus and devotees. Around noon, walking along the path, they reached the village of Bilkha. On the outskirts of the village, there was the dense shade of banyan trees and a temple dedicated to Mahadevji. Everyone decided to halt at this temple for their afternoon meal and rest. Swami remarked, “It is Shriji Maharaj’s divine injunction that one should never stay at someone’s private property without the explicit permission of its owner.” Therefore, keeping the entire congregation waiting outside, Swami and Shivlal Sheth of Botad went ahead to seek permission from the mahant (ascetic in charge) of the shrine.

Seeing such a large gathering arriving, the mahant grew anxious, thinking, “How will I alone look after the hospitality of so many people?” Gripped by hesitation and fear, he concealed himself inside his quarters. Swami called out for him a few times, after which he came out onto the veranda. Swami courteously said, “We wish to halt briefly in your temple premises to offer thaal to Thakorji this afternoon, and we have come to seek your permission.” The mahant replied, “There is no shortage of dry provisions (seedho) in the temple, but there is no one here to cook or serve you. If you can cook for yourselves, I shall provide as much ration as you all require.” Swami happily replied, “That is wonderful! Please provide the provisions; our sadhus and devotees will gladly roast and prepare the meal themselves.”

Shivlal Sheth of Botad, who was accompanying Swami, immediately spoke up, “Swami! When I am right here with you, it does not seem appropriate to take provisions from an ascetic’s charitable store (sadavrat); it reflects poorly on us. Please accept my sponsorship for the meal.” Gunatitanand Swami smiled gently and replied, “Shivlal! Today, my wish is to bestow ultimate liberation upon this mahant. Sadhus and devotees partake of your sponsored meals every day! If his dry provisions are offered today in Thakorji’s thaal and utilized in the service of sadhus and devotees, it will bring immense spiritual elevation to his soul.”

The mahant promptly supplied the provisions. The sadhus prepared sukhadi (a traditional sweet made of wheat flour, ghee, and jaggery) and shaped large laddoos weighing a seer each. The food was reverently offered to Thakorji in thaal, and all the sadhus and devotees sat in rows (pankti) to dine.

Gunatitanand Swami had the mahant personally serve one sukhadi laddoo to each sadhu and devotee. Then, extending his own hand, Swami personally took a laddoo in his leaf-plate (pattar) from the hands of the mahant and sat on the veranda of the shrine to eat. While eating, Swami stood up and moved, sitting in three distinct spots to finish his meal.

Observing this unusual act of Swami, Shivlal Sheth was astonished. After Swami finished eating, Shivlal Sheth humbly inquired, “Swami, why did you do this while dining today? Why did you get up and sit in three different places during the meal?”

Swami replied, “Shivlal! Wherever I sat, those spots have now become sacred places of pilgrimage (tirth). In the future, whoever comes here and engages in devotion to God will attain spiritual strength (beej-bal). Historically, wherever holy pilgrimage sites have emerged, they have done so through the divine footsteps and sanctification of God-realized holy personalities.”
