Kanbi Patel of Dhari and Satsang Paksh

In the village of Dhari in Amreli district, two merchant satsangi brothers, Sheth Raghavji and Dhanji, decided to purchase and trade groundnuts in partnership with a non-satsangi merchant from the village. During weighing at the grain market (danapith), a discrepancy occurred, and the government administrator (vahiwatdar) imposed a penalty. As a penalty for the public contract, each was ordered to pay a fine of one thousand rupees. The brothers pleaded, “We do not have the full sum right now; we shall pay gradually in installments.” However, the administrator refused, saying, “A government fine cannot be paid in installments. You will be permitted to leave only when you pay the entire amount.” He detained both brothers. When the village leaders (mahajan) learned of this, they intervened, but no compromise was reached and the matter escalated toward court. One brother, Dhanji Sheth, managed to pay his fine of one thousand rupees before going to court and was freed.

As Raghavji Sheth was being taken away, some villagers gathered around him and taunted, “Wipe away this new Swaminarayan tilak from your forehead and break your kanthi (sacred wooden neck beads); then we will pay your fine and free you right away!” Raghavji Sheth replied with unshakeable conviction, “This sacred kanthi and tilak-chandlo are dearer to me than my very life! They shall remain on this body until my very last breath, even if the heavens fall upon me!”

The police officer took him and placed him in prison. Standing among the villagers, a Kanbi Patel haribhakta witnessed this entire ordeal. Deeply moved, he immediately rushed home and said to his elder brother, “Brother, presently we are two brothers. But had we been three brothers, we would have borne expenses for his wedding and given him a one-third share of our land and property! In the same spirit of a third brother, let us embrace satsangi Raghavji Sheth as our own brother, pay the fine, and free him from jail.”

Without hesitation, the two Kanbi haribhakta brothers paid the one thousand rupees in cash and secured the release of satsangi Raghavji Sheth from prison. Furthermore, maintaining deep loyalty (paksh) for a fellow devotee before the administrator, they successfully helped Raghavji Sheth restart his groundnut trade.

After some time, sadhus visited Dhari village, and the devotees narrated the inspiring account of how these Kanbi brothers had stood firmly by a fellow devotee. When the sadhus returned to Gadhpur, they relayed the story to Shri Hari. Shri Hari was immensely pleased and proclaimed, “He who stands firmly by a fellow devotee in times of adversity and supports him at the crucial hour is a true satsangi! Whenever those Kanbi devotees visit Gadhpur, introduce them to Me.”

A year later, when the pilgrim congregation (sangh) from Dhari arrived in Gadhpur, that Kanbi devotee went to Darbargadh to have the divine darshan of Shri Hari. When the sadhus introduced him, Shri Hari immediately rose from His cot (dholiyo) and embraced the Kanbi devotee with overwhelming love. Shri Hari took off the sanctified (prasadi) garland from His own neck, placed it around the devotee, and patted his back, expressing immense divine joy. Shri Hari clapped His hands before the entire assembly of sants and devotees and announced, “You have freed Me from prison, because you freed Our devotee! You are indeed a staunch and genuine satsangi!”

Because of his unflinching loyalty and love for fellow satsangis (satsang paksh), when his final moments arrived, Shri Hari personally escorted that Kanbi haribhakta to Akshardham.
