The Two Mango Trees of Gnanbag in Vadtal and Shriji Maharaj
In Samvat 1893, on the auspicious festival of Shri Hari Jayanti (Ram Navami), Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami arrived in Vadtal from Junagadh along with his sant mandal. During the spiritual assemblies of the festival, Swami delivered inspiring discourses extolling the supreme divine form of Shri Hari and revealed the sublime mystery of pure Upasana. On the day of Dasham (the tenth day of the bright half of Chaitra), Swami walked into Gnanbag and stood beneath the two mango trees where Shri Hari had lovingly tied a hindolo (swing) and swung in divine bliss. Swami bowed reverently to the trunks of both mango trees and performed pradakshinas (circumambulations) around them. Gathering all the devotees together, Swami held an assembly right beneath those mango trees and said, “Both of these mango trees have attained direct association with Shri Hari Himself, and are therefore immensely sanctified (maha-prasadibhut). Through the divine sambandh of Shriji Maharaj, both trees attained the highest spiritual liberation and became worthy of Akshardham.”
Hearing this, a devotee asked, “Swami, what pious deeds (satkarmas) must these two mango trees have performed in their past lives to be blessed with the direct divine touch and association of Purushottam Narayan Himself?” Swami smiled gently and replied, “In their previous birth, these two were brothers and kings of the Telang region. Both were deeply righteous (dharmishtha) and noble. For the ultimate liberation of their souls, they renounced their royal duties and kingdom, joining sannyasis on a twelve-year pilgrimage (tirthatan), subsisting solely on fruits. Seeing their rigorous austerity purely for moksha, the sannyasis were exceedingly pleased and offered to grant them a boon.”
At that moment, the two royal brothers folded their hands with deep humility and pleaded, “O venerable Mahatmas! If you are pleased with us, please bestow upon us the blessing of attaining Pragat Bhagwan (the manifest Supreme Lord in human form). For living in your holy company, we have realized that without Pragat Bhagwan, ultimate liberation is impossible.” Impressed by their pure devotion and austerity, an elderly sannyasi among them said, “In this present life, you must continue your penance; however, in your next birth, both of you shall be born as mango trees, and Purna Purushottam Narayan Himself shall tie a swing to your branches and sway upon you. At that sacred time, through your divine contact with Bhagwan, that shall be your final birth and you shall attain supreme moksha.” Overjoyed by the elder sannyasi’s prophecy and blessing, both brothers returned home after concluding their holy pilgrimage.
Upon hearing Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami’s explanation, a devotee remarked, “Then, just as Shri Krishna Bhagwan liberated Yamalarjuna, similarly through the divine sambandh of Shriji Maharaj, the souls residing in these two trees were liberated!”
Swami smiled and clarified, “Yamalarjuna were Kubera’s sons, Nalakuvara and Manigriva. They were worldly pleasure-seekers who, intoxicated by sensual indulgence, failed to show respect even to a param-bhagawat sant like Naradji. Therefore, Naradji cursed them, yet out of compassion later granted them a boon: ‘You shall both become trees in Gokul, and through the sambandh of Shri Krishna Bhagwan, you will be redeemed.’ In contrast, these two brothers, though royal monarchs, were true ascetics who lived a devotion-filled life solely for the salvation of their souls. Thus, by the grace of enlightened saints and direct contact with Shriji Maharaj, they attained atyantik kalyan (ultimate redemption).”
Hearing this divine revelation from Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami, all the devotees in the assembly realized the supreme glory of those two mango trees and understood the true meaning of moksha and atyantik kalyan.
