Gangama of Jetalpur and Brahmanand Swami’s Heartfelt Song
Once, enacting human-like divine pastimes (manushya charitra), Shri Hari feigned annoyance and quietly departed all alone from Gadhpur. He arrived in Jetalpur and took shelter at the home of His devout devotee, Gangama. When Gangama unexpectedly received the divine darshan of Shri Hari at her doorstep, her joy knew no bounds. Shriji Maharaj said to her, “Gangama! We wish to stay hidden in your home. Do not let anyone know that We have come here.” Gangama replied with deep humility and devotion, “Certainly, Maharaj! You are most welcome to stay. It shall be exactly as You wish; I will not let a soul find out.”
When the Supreme Lord, Parabrahma Purushottam Narayan Himself, took residence in her home, words fall short of describing her divine bliss! It seemed as though new life had been breathed into all her daily activities. Every chore was infused with boundless enthusiasm and unmatched devotion. She lovingly prepared a variety of delicious dishes, offered them with deep reverence in the sacred thaal, and affectionately fed Maharaj. Seeing her extraordinary happiness, the women devotees of the village wondered, “Why is our Gangama so remarkably joyful these days?” They often inquired, but bound by her promise to Shri Hari, Gangama gave them not the slightest clue. The villagers too, knowing her pious nature, did not probe any further.
Meanwhile, back in Gadhpur, the entire Satsang was left lifeless in the absence of Shri Hari. Laduba, Jivuba, Dada Khachar, and other beloved devotees could not even swallow food. They wept inconsolably and pleaded with everyone to search for Shri Hari and bring Him back. Sadguru Brahmanand Swami and Sura Khachar felt the pangs of separation (viraha) most acutely. Sharing an intimate bond of divine friendship (sakha-bhav) with the Lord, these two exalted souls set out to find Shri Hari.
Searching village after village—including Ugamedi, Sarangpur, Kundal, and Botad—Brahmamuni and Sura Bapu finally arrived at Jetalpur. Brahmamuni said to Sura Khachar, “Sura Bapu! My heart tells me that Shri Hari must be staying at Gangama’s house. I have an unmistakable feeling that He is joyfully partaking of meals lovingly cooked by her hands.” Discussing this, they reached the outskirts of the village, where young children were playing. Swami asked them, “Children, has any guest arrived at Gangama’s house recently?” The children replied, “We do not know about a guest, but these days Gangama is extraordinarily joyful; we see her bustling around and completing all her chores with great speed and excitement.”
A nod is as good as a wink to a wise man—the sharp and perceptive Brahmanand Swami instantly understood that Shri Hari was indeed residing there. Both of them arrived at Gangama’s home. Hearing them arrive, Shriji Maharaj immediately hid inside a large grain storage container (kothi) within the house. Gangama warmly welcomed the guests, laid out a cot in the veranda (osari), and seated them respectfully. Brahmanand Swami asked, “Gangama! Shri Hari has come to Jetalpur; is He perhaps staying in your house?” Gangama tried to deflect, saying, “If Shri Hari were at my home, why would I hesitate to tell you? The Lord has not come here at all!”
Brahmanand Swami realized that ordinary inquiries would not work here; Shri Hari would not reveal Himself so easily. And unless they received His divine darshan, the agonizing viraha of the devotees in Gadhpur could never be soothed. To appease and draw out Shri Hari, Swami stood in the veranda and, pouring out the deepest emotions of his yearning heart, spontaneously composed an intensely devotional song (aartnaad pad). In his deep, resonant, and melodious voice, he began to sing with heartfelt emotion:
Mātā Jashodā re melo ghar māhre re..!
Kāhanjīne mahīdu valovavā kāj,
Gharnā te mānas re koī gher māre nathī re,
Eklī hu mandirīyā mā chhu āj… Mātā Jashodā re…
Amāre tamāre re, bhelī sāro ādno re,
Amne nāve bījāno itbār,
Te sāru tamārā re lālne mokalo re,
Valonāmā jājī nathī kaī vār… Mātā Jashodā re..!
Jhāzhu mahī mākhan re āpīsh hu jamvā re,
Bhāve tevā bhojan ne dūdhbhāt,
Brahmanandnā vahālānī fajet na karjyo re,
Rājī thaīne raheshe to rākhīshu rāt..!
Mātā Jashodā re melo ghar māhre re..!
(Meaning: “O Mother Yashoda! Please send your beloved Kanha to my house to churn the curds! There is no one else in my home today; I am all alone in my humble abode… You and I share an eternal bond from time immemorial, and I have faith in no one else. Therefore, send your precious son to me; churning the curds will not take long. I shall offer Him plenty of fresh butter and curds to eat, along with whatever delicacies He desires and sweet milk-rice. O Mother, please do not hide Brahmanand’s Beloved and cause Him such distress; if He is pleased to stay, we shall keep Him with us all night! O Mother Yashoda, send Him to my home!”)
As Swami stood in the veranda singing this poignant verse with streams of tears flowing from his eyes, Shri Hari, listening from inside the grain container, could no longer bear the agonizing plea of His beloved friend and loving devotee. Overcome with deep love and eager to embrace Swami, the Lord emerged from the granary and rushed forward to hold Brahmanand Swami in a tight embrace. In that sacred moment, right there in the veranda, a divine triveni sangam—the confluence of God, His exalted devotee, and the affectionate motherly devotee—was miraculously brought to life.
