Mahadev Gor of Pipli and Shriji Maharaj
The village of Pipli is situated approximately 57 kilometers from Gadhpur. In this village lived Lakhamanbhai Thakkar, an ardent and loving devotee of Shri Hari. Once, while traveling to Junagadh to celebrate the vibrant festival of Fuldol (the festival of colors), Shriji Maharaj passed through Kotda-Pitha and Devaliya, arriving in Pipli along with His large congregation of sadhus and devotees (sangh). The villagers welcomed the Lord with great joy and a grand traditional reception (samaiyu), lovingly hosting Shri Hari at Lakhaman Thakkar’s residence.
Gaya Devaliye kari daya, tyathi Pipli e Prabhu gaya…
Taha Lakshman Thakkar vaas, utarya tena vaasni paas…!
(Bestowing grace upon Devaliya, the Lord proceeded to Pipli; there at the dwelling of Lakshman Thakkar, He lovingly took up residence.)
In the evening assembly, Shri Hari affectionately inquired about the well-being of the villagers. The devotees folded their hands and submitted, “O Lord! A ferocious tiger has entered our village and preyed on a cow just last night.” Enacting a divine human pastime (manushya charitra), Shri Hari said, “All of you villagers should take turns keeping night watch (pahra), and protect Us and the entire sangh tonight.” Hearing the Lord’s words, the devotees humbly agreed and prepared to keep guard.
A learned Brahmin of the village named Mahadev Gor was also present in that gathering. Hearing Shri Hari ask for protection, doubts arose in his mind: ‘Why do people revere him as God? He is asking his own devotees to protect him! If he were truly the Supreme Lord, he ought to protect his devotees. How can these people cross the ocean of worldly existence (bhavsagar) by taking refuge in him?’ Perplexed by these thoughts, he remained deeply skeptical.
Taha vipra Mahadev naam, tyare betho hato teh thaam…
Tene ven eva sunya jyare, manma thayo sanshay tyare…
Jenu rakshan janthi karay, tyare te Prabhu shu kahevay?
E shu maru rakshan karshe, ena sharanthii shu bhav tarshe?
(There sat a Brahmin named Mahadev; hearing those words, doubt arose within his heart: “Can one who needs protection from mortals truly be called God? How can he protect me, and how can one cross worldly existence in his refuge?”)
Assuring the devotees that He would visit Pipli again on His return journey, Shri Hari departed the next morning with the congregation towards Junagadh.
After joyously celebrating the festival in Junagadh, Shriji Maharaj returned via Pipli. All the devotees rushed out with devotion to have His divine darshan. The scholarly Mahadev Gor also came, but stood at a distance, carrying a secret test in his heart. It was decided that the assembly would be held beneath the shade of a majestic banyan tree on the outskirts of the village. Devotees vied with one another in loving competition to arrange the finest seat for Maharaj. Two prominent village leaders, Hima Thakkar and Vaghji Gor, brought two brand new wooden cots (dholiyas) adorned with luxurious mattresses of mashru silk-cotton and plush bolsters, placing them beneath the tree.
Seeing this, Mahadev Gor brought out his own old, creaky wooden cot along with an old, worn-out quilt, placed it beside the two elegant cots, and made a silent resolve: ‘If Swaminarayan is truly the omniscient Supreme Lord, He will bypass those brand new, luxurious cots and choose to sit on my broken, humble cot!’
Amidst jubilant musical celebrations, Shriji Maharaj arrived at the assembly. He saw the three cots laid out for Him. Despite the repeated entreaties of the devotees urging Him to rest on the magnificent new cots, the omniscient Lord walked straight over and joyfully seated Himself upon Mahadev Gor’s humble, worn-out cot!
Seeing the Lord seated upon his ragged cot, tears welled up in Mahadev Gor’s eyes. Overwhelmed with emotion and remorse, he rushed forward, threw himself at Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s lotus feet, and wept while seeking forgiveness and singing His praises. The villagers were astonished and asked Maharaj, “What is Gor Bapa saying, and why is he weeping?”
Shriji Maharaj smilingly revealed the secret of the three cots and exposed the hidden prayer of Mahadev Gor’s heart to the entire gathering. The villagers were filled with wonder. This miraculous revelation completely shattered Mahadev Gor’s skepticism. He attained unshakable conviction (dradh nishchay) in Shriji Maharaj’s divine supremacy, embraced the vows of Satsang (vartman dharan karyo), wore the sacred kanthi, and surrendered unconditionally at the lotus feet of Bhagwan Swaminarayan.
Pachi Nath padhariya tyay, tran dholiya dhalela jyay…!
Juna dholiya par Jagdish, raji thaine birajya munish…!!
Mahadeve kahyu jodi haath, tame satya Prabhu Krupanath…!
Pan dustar chhe tav maya, bhav Brahma jeva bharmaya…!!
– Harililamrut (Kalash 7, Vishram 14)
(Then the Lord arrived where the three cots were laid; upon the old cot, the Lord of the universe joyfully took His seat! With folded hands Mahadev proclaimed: “You alone are the true merciful Lord! Yet Your divine Maya is so formidable that even Brahma and Shiva are enchanted by it!”)
Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami has also commemorated the devout souls of Pipli in ‘Shri Bhaktachintamani’ (Chapter 115, Verse 51):
Bhakat Thakkar Lakhaman Mono, Prago ne Viro bhakt Prabhuno..!
Harijan Aju Mulibai, vase gaam Piplimaai..!!
– From Shri Bhaktachintamani…
