The Parshads of Gadhpur and Sadguru Gopalanand Swami’s Divine Discourse

Once, Sadguru Gopalanand Swami arrived in Gadhpur from Vadtal for the sacred darshan of Shri Gopinathji Maharaj. After having darshan of the divine deities in the mandir, Swami retired to his lodging. Muktaraj Dada Khachar and other devotees came to pay their respects to Swami, and Swami affectionately inquired about their well-being. Dada Khachar said, “Swami, your arrival in Gadhpur today to grant us darshan has brought immense joy. We are all peaceful and happy.” Swami delivered uplifting spiritual discourses (katha-varta) and was immensely pleased with all the devotees.

Sadguru Gopalanand Swami stayed in Gadhpur for about ten days. One morning, while seated in the spiritual assembly, Swami asked, “Santos, how many Parshads (dedicated attendant-devotees) are currently serving in our mandir?” Sadguru Premanand Swami replied, “Swami, there are around forty Parshads in total!” Upon hearing this, Swami said, “Please summon all the Parshads before us.”

Sadguru Premanand Swami immediately arranged for a messenger to bring all the Parshads to the assembly.

Zaver Bhakta, Mandan Bhakta, Govind Bhakta, Monji Bhakta, and all the other Parshads arrived, prostrated reverently at Swami’s holy feet, and sat near him. Bestowing a merciful glance upon them, Swami inquired, “You are all devotees of God. Just as a king has four kinds of servants, what kind of servants of God are you?”

Zaver Bhakta, Mandan Bhakta, and the others looked at each other in bewilderment, unable to answer. After a brief pause, Swami expounded upon the four types of servants:

“First is the servant of the king’s royal bedstead (dholiya no chakar). If thieves or assassins approach the king, he would readily sacrifice his own life to protect the king. However, if his own son is found at fault, he sides with his son rather than upholding the king’s honor. Such devotees are like the servant of the king’s bedstead.

The second is the king’s feudal chieftain (patavat). He faithfully carries out the king’s affairs and protects the realm from harm. If an enemy attacks, he fights fiercely to defend the king’s interests. But if the king hesitates or defaults on paying his salary, he turns against the king and causes him harm!

The third is the king’s soldier (sipai). He obediently carries out duties wherever the king stations him. Yet, if the king promised an additional allowance and fails to deliver it, the soldier speaks ill of the king and defames him!

And the fourth is the king’s humble and faithful bondservant (golo). He rejoices in the king’s happiness and shares in the king’s sorrows. Even if the king strikes him with slippers in displeasure, the bondservant endures it humbly, dusts off the footwear, and respectfully places them back right before the king’s feet. With folded hands and profound humility, he submits, ‘We are your lifelong servants; leaving you, where could we possibly go!’ One possessing such absolute surrender and unconditional devotion is known as the king’s true bondservant.”

Swami then asked, “Now speak, devotees, which type of servants are you?”

Then Zaver Bhakta, Mandan Bhakta, and all the Parshads humbly replied with folded hands, “We are the humble bondservants of Acharya Shri Raghuvirji Maharaj! May obeying the divine commands of Shri Hari and Acharya Shri Raghuvirji Maharaj become the very breath of our life—kindly bless us with such grace.”

Beholding the extraordinary surrender and selfless servant-hood of all the Parshads, Sadguru Gopalanand Swami was exceedingly pleased and showered his profound divine blessings upon them.
