Gangadhar Dave of Zamrala and Dharmaswarupanand Brahmachari
In the village of Zamrala near Kariyani, there lived two Brahmin brothers, Jethabhai Dave and Gangadhar Dave, who were spiritual seekers (mumukshus) possessing divine impressions from past lives. Whenever Shri Hari or the holy sadhus visited their village, both brothers joyfully procured provisions, prepared sanctified meals, fed everyone with deep reverence, and pleased them all through their humble devotion and selfless service.
Once, Shri Hari graced Zamrala with His divine presence. The two brothers lovingly persuaded Him to prolong His stay. Later, when Shri Hari expressed, “We must now proceed to Gadhada (Gadhpur),” Gangadhar Dave humbly prayed, “O Maharaj! Please allow me to harness my bullock cart. If You grace it with Your presence, I shall personally drive You to Gadhpur.” Pleased with his loving devotion, Shri Hari agreed. Gangadhar Dave yoked the oxen to the cart, seated Shri Hari reverently, and set out for Gadhpur. As they traveled along the road, Shri Hari observed the draft animals and remarked, “Gangadhar…! These oxen are truly exceptional and magnificent!” Throughout the journey to Gadhpur, Shri Hari repeatedly praised the fine quality and beauty of the bullocks.
Through constant association with holy sadhus, Gangadhar Dave possessed a profound detachment (vairagya) toward worldly life and an innate desire for spiritual servitude. Upon arriving in Gadhpur, Gangadhar Dave offered prostrations (dandvat pranam) at the lotus feet of Shri Hari and submitted with deep humility, “O Maharaj! Since You have showered such praise upon these bullocks, from this day forward, these oxen, this cart, and this servant Gangadhar—all are forever offered at Your holy lotus feet!” Saying this, he stayed back in Gadhpur with his bullock cart, dedicating himself fully as an attendant (parshad) in divine service. For an entire year, he served the temple selflessly in this humble capacity.
With time, observing his intense renunciation and purity of devotion, Shri Hari obtained the willing consent of his family members and initiated him as an ascetic with Brahmachari diksha, naming him ‘Dharmaswarupanand Brahmachari’.
After Shri Hari’s departure to His divine abode, Dharmaswarupanandji predominantly stayed in the holy company of Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami. Beholding his sharp intellect, profound detachment, and unswerving spirit of service, Gunatitanand Swami affectionately addressed him by the endearing name of ‘Rishi’.
On one occasion, Dharmaswarupanand Brahmachariji was traveling from Gadhpur to Vadtal for a grand festival (samaiyo) in the holy entourage of Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami, Acharya Shri Raghuvirji Maharaj, and a large congregation of devotees. At the outskirts of Vagad village, the congregation halted beneath the cool shade of trees to take their afternoon refreshments (teeman). While everyone was dining, Dharmaswarupanand Brahmachariji began singing with deep emotion the renowned devotional verses of detachment: “Januni jeevo re Gopichandni…” (Blessed is the mother of King Gopichand who inspired him to renounce worldly life). After he had sung two verses, Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami playfully inquired with subtle wit, “Rishi…! Have you aimed these cannons at someone specific, or are you just firing shots into the open sky?” Hearing Gunatitanand Swami’s insightful remark, the Brahmachari smiled and replied, “Swami, Sheth Shivlal is sitting right across from us. Beholding his exceptional spiritual calibre and worthiness, I have aimed these cannons directly at him!” Gunatitanand Swami burst into laughter and exclaimed, “Rishi! He is an eminent merchant worth twelve lakhs of rupees and the sole heir of his wealthy father, and you have directly set your target upon him…!” Dharmaswarupanandji then concluded singing the kirtan.
Witnessing Dharmaswarupanandji’s sharp discernment and insight into the virtues of a spiritually receptive soul, Acharya Shri Raghuvirji Maharaj and all the assembled saints and devotees rejoiced in hearty laughter.
