Shamji Patel of Mankuva and the Assurance at the Final Hour

In the village of Mankuva in Kutch, there lived a prominent village chieftain and Patidar named Shamji Patel. With advancing age, he fell ill, and his final hour drew near. As he lay on his bed, his devout son, Devshibhai, sat attentively by his side. Reflecting upon his life, Shamji Patel said with deep sorrow, “Son Devshi, a heavy thought troubles my mind. My death is near, yet I have gathered no spiritual provisions (bhaathu) for my soul’s journey beyond. All my life, I served as the village headman, attended to local village affairs, settled disputes for the people, and worked for the royal court. In doing all these worldly duties, many compromises, both right and wrong, must have inevitably occurred! I never devoted myself to the worship of God, nor did I perform any righteous deeds for the ultimate salvation of my soul.”

Hearing his father’s anguish, Devshi Patel comforted him, saying, “Revered Father, I am a devotee of the Satsang and a surrenderer unto Bhagwan Swaminarayan. According to Shri Hari’s holy commandments, I have dutifully tithed a tenth or twentieth portion of my earnings, offered devotional meals (thaal) to Thakorji, fed the sadhus, and offered clothes and dhotis to the holy ascetics. The sacred scriptures and Puranas proclaim that whatever is offered in the service of God and His devotees yields thousands of times more spiritual merit. Therefore, all the devotion and service I have performed naturally serve as the spiritual sustenance for your soul!”

Shamji Patel remarked, “What you say is true, my son. However, I never took the spiritual vows (vartaman) nor became an initiated devotee myself; how then can this benefit my soul?” Devshi Patel lovingly replied, “Father, Shriji Maharaj has granted a divine boon that even at the final hour of life, if someone remembers Him with devotion or takes initiation into the holy vows (vartaman), He Himself will come to escort that soul and grant them entry into His divine abode, Akshardham. Therefore, let me administer the vartaman unto you right now.”

Saying this, Devshi Patel poured sanctified water into his father Shamji Patel’s palm, remembered Lord Shri Hari, and initiated him into the sacred five vows (vartaman). He lovingly placed a kanthi (double-stranded basil-wood necklace) around his father’s neck and advised, “Now, father, do not attach your mind to any worldly ties. Fix your thoughts solely on Shri Hari and chant the holy name, ‘Swaminarayan… Swaminarayan…!’ We too shall join you in continuous prayer.”

Shamji Patel lay in bed and had chanted the divine name ‘Swaminarayan… Swaminarayan…!’ for barely two ghatikas (about an hour) when suddenly a celestial radiance illuminated the entire house. Filled with transcendental awe and ecstasy, Shamji Patel exclaimed, “Look! A divine chariot has arrived and stands right in our courtyard! Never in my entire life have I beheld such a wondrous chariot! The celestial oxen pulling the chariot, their ornate decorative covers, the jingling strings of bells, and all the radiant trappings are utterly divine! And driving this chariot is none other than Lord Shri Hari Himself! He wears a magnificent turban adorned with three elegant tassels (chhogla), a glittering embroidered robe (zari jaamo), and golden trousers. His ten fingers are adorned with ornamental rings, His fair cheeks bear the sacred tilak of saffron-sandalwood paste with a red kumkum chandlo in the center, and He holds a golden staff in His hand. He has come personally in His chariot to take me! Quickly, prepare a sanctified square (chauko) on the floor and place me on the ground. I wish to depart with Shri Hari to the divine Akshardham! Let everyone chant ‘Swaminarayan… Swaminarayan…!’ with love!”

His son Devshi softly prayed, “Father, since Shriji Maharaj Himself has arrived to escort you, depart happily and peacefully to Akshardham. Keep your consciousness free from any attachment to this worldly realm. Be joyfully prepared to go with Shriji Maharaj.”

Shamji Patel offered his heartfelt ‘Jai Shree Swaminarayan’ to everyone present, peacefully cast off his mortal frame, and departed for the divine abode of Akshardham.
