Jethibai of Vadnagar and the Miracle of the Inexhaustible Granary
In North Gujarat lies the ancient and renowned town of Vadnagar. Shri Hari sanctified this sacred town with His visits on numerous occasions, performing delightful divine pastimes (leelas) that brought immense joy to the devotees. Much like the staunch devotees of Visnagar, the satsangis of Vadnagar also preserved their faith undaunted despite facing immense hardships. In Vadnagar lived a devout widow named Jethibai and her young son, Vanmalibhai, who were both deeply devoted disciples. They earned their meager living through manual daily labor. Whenever traveling sadhus visited the town, Jethibai, despite her impoverished circumstances, would send provisions (seedho) through her son Vanmalibhai and affectionately feed them all. The omniscient Lord Shri Hari was greatly pleased by her humble and selfless service.
Prior to the devastating famine of Samvat 1869 (popularly known as the Ognotero famine), Shri Hari had forewarned His devotees, sending advance messages instructing them to purchase and store grains even if it meant selling their household jewelry. Shri Hari Himself traveled from village to village to caution and care for the welfare of His devotees. During this journey, Shri Hari arrived in Vadnagar.
Jethibai was overjoyed beyond measure and reverently welcomed Shri Hari into her humble abode. Her heart overflowed with bliss. Taking out fresh quilts from her chest, she spread them over a cot on the veranda, placed a comfortable bolster, seated Shriji Maharaj, and offered Him cool drinking water. With immense love and dedication, she prepared and offered a devotional meal (thaal) of millet rotla, spiced eggplant curry, and fresh milk and butter from her cow. Delighted by the sincere devotion of His loving devotee, Shri Hari partook of the meal with great satisfaction.
After concluding His meal and rinsing His hands, Shri Hari sat comfortably and inquired of Jethibai, “How are your household affairs faring?” Jethibai folded her hands and prayed, “O Maharaj! There is barely half a maund (around twenty pounds) of grain left in this earthen granary (kothi). My only worry is how we shall survive this harsh famine. Vanmali is still very young, and finding manual labor during such a drought is nearly impossible.”
Hearing her earnest prayer, the compassionate Shri Hari replied, “Jethibai, because you strictly adhere to the sacred codes of dharma and remain immersed in devotion, We have already taken charge of your worldly needs. This famine year will be difficult; therefore, seal the top lid of this granary tightly and draw out grain only from the lower opening (saano) as needed. Use the grain throughout the entire year in this manner. You may also barter some of this grain to obtain any other household necessities you require. In this way, you will pass through this famine year comfortably.” Bestowing this divine boon and resting for a while at Jethibai’s house, Shri Hari departed.
Jethibai placed implicit trust in Shri Hari’s words. Throughout the harsh famine year, she spoke inspiringly to the village women about the glory and greatness of Satsang. Whenever holy sadhus, mendicants, or needy travelers visited the town, she warmly prepared fresh rotlas and fed them. Throughout the catastrophic famine of Samvat 1869, she drew millet exclusively from the lower opening of that earthen granary, and by the divine grace of Shri Hari, the grain never diminished! The townspeople were astonished by this miracle, and witnessing how Shri Hari shielded and sustained His devotee through the famine, many accepted Satsang.
Jethibai continued her unbroken devotion unto Shri Hari, often joining pilgrim groups to travel to Ahmedabad, Jetalpur, and other places whenever Shri Hari visited, to have His divine darshan. In the fullness of time, when her final moment arrived, she gave her parting counsel to her son Vanmalibhai, saying, “Firmly preserve your faith in Satsang and always worship Shri Hari. Shri Hari Himself has arrived to escort me, and I am departing with Him to the divine Akshardham.” Saying ‘Jai Swaminarayan’ to all, she peacefully shed her mortal frame.
Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami has also commemorated her in the holy scripture Shri Bhaktachintamani:
“Many exalted souls reside in Vadnagar, supremely pure devotees of the Lord…! Brahmin devotees like Bechar and others, and the pious Harijans Jethi and Dolibai..!!”
- From the remembrance of the liberated souls in Shri Bhaktachintamani…
