Jivabhai of Kantharia and His Devout Wife
In the village of Kantharia, there lived a Kanbi devotee named Jivabhai. Through the sacred association and company of holy saints, he had become a sincere and devout Satsangi. However, his wife was deeply opposed to Satsang (kusangi). Jivabhai remained constantly immersed in devotion and the chanting of the Lord’s holy name, which displeased his wife immensely, and she continuously quarreled and created discord at home. She would find every pretext to harass and disturb Jivabhai.
Once, Chhaganbhai of Pachhegam, along with Brahmin Kevalram Bhatt and carpenter Kalobhai, set out on foot for the divine darshan at Vadtal. On their way, they arrived at Kantharia village and stayed overnight at the village square (choro) to rest. The three met Jivabhai, inquired about his well-being, and said, “Jivabhai, we are going to Vadtal; please come along with us for darshan. Pack some food provisions (bhathu) for the journey, and let us all travel to Vadtal together.”
Jivabhai returned home and asked his wife, “Please prepare some food provisions for the journey; I need to go to Vadtal.” His wife retorted harshly, “Listen Bhagatda! If you want to go, just go. I am not idle and free like you; I will not make any food for you!”
Jivabhai realized that arguing with his wife was futile. He told his fellow devotees, “Please wait a little while; I will prepare the provisions myself.” The devout Jivabhai immediately lit the hearth, heated ghee and jaggery in a pan, added flour to make sweet Sukhdi, and packed it into a container. Before departing, he took some money for travel expenses and his personal puja from the family chest, and set out with everyone towards Vadtal. At that moment, his wife shouted with all her might, straining her neck in anger: “Be gone, you wretched man! Go and never show your face here again!”
Jivabhai did not utter a single word in reply and quietly reached the outskirts of the village with his companions. There, he told the devotees in the pilgrim group, “Please wait here for a moment; let me quickly go home and convey one message.” Leaving them there, Jivabhai returned home. His wife was making cow-dung cakes in the backyard. Seeing him in the courtyard, she snapped aggressively, “O Bhagatda, why have you come back again?” Jivabhai calmly replied, “I only came back to tell you that judging by the bitter words you spoke, neither this village entrance nor your face is worth ever seeing again! But I am utterly shameless (unshakable in devotion), so don’t you worry—I will certainly return in fifteen days!” Having said this, he joined the others and proceeded to Vadtal for darshan.
Eventually, with the passage of time, Jivabhai’s wife underwent a divine transformation of heart, embraced Satsang wholeheartedly, and would travel to Gadhpur every full moon (Poonam) to have the divine darshan of Shri Gopinathji Maharaj.
