Oghad Khuman of Shelna-Bhamodra and Shriji Maharaj
The rulers and chieftains (Darbars) of Shelna-Bhamodra—Shri Oghad Khuman and his two brothers, Vajasur Khuman and Ram Khuman—had embraced Satsang. They had heard in the Satsang fellowship that the revered daughters of Ebhal Khachar in Gadhada (Motiba and Laduba) were divine incarnations of Jagadamba Devi, and they resolved to travel there to have their holy darshan. With this spiritual longing, Oghad Khuman, Vajasur Khuman, and Ram Khuman arrived in Gadhpur and stayed at Dada Khachar’s darbar. Dada Khachar extended warm hospitality, treating them with immense courtesy and serving them sanctified meals. The three spiritual seekers then requested Dada Khachar, “We wish to have the holy darshan of Motiba and Laduba.” Dada Khachar replied, “Certainly, but they do not speak with anyone.”
Thereafter, they all proceeded to the room of Shri Vasudevnarayan. Dada Khachar arranged three cots laid with fine embroidered mats (chaklas), upon which the three brothers sat, while Dada Khachar sat at the threshold of the chamber. Oghad Khuman then spoke, “Dada! Please convey to Ba that Oghad Khuman, Vajasur Khuman, and Ram Khuman offer their ‘Narayan’ (humble greetings) to them.” From within the chamber, Motiba responded, “Dada! Tell the brothers, ‘Jay Swaminarayan’.” The moment they heard those divine words, all worldly thoughts and wandering notions in their minds ceased instantly. They experienced deep spiritual conviction, realizing: “These holy sisters are verily the living embodiments of Lakshmiji and Radhikaji!” The three brothers then came out under the neem tree in the courtyard, offered prostrations (dandvat pranam) unto the holy sisters, and returned to their home the next day.
Some time later, recognizing Oghad Khuman’s innate spiritual readiness from past lives (purva-mumukshuta), Shri Hari directed Sadguru Muktanand Swami to guide him further into Satsang. Consequently, at the dharamshala of Devjibhakta in Bhavnagar, they met Sadguru Yoganand Swami, the revered spiritual guru of the Gohilwad region. Listening to Swami’s profound and serene discourses, Oghad Khuman felt in his heart, “We have never encountered such pure, elevated sadhus before.” His soul was filled with supreme peace and tranquility. He prayed to Swami, “Please tie the sacred kanthi around our necks and initiate us into the refuge of Shri Hari!” Sadguru Yoganand Swami replied, “You are valiant Kathi Darbars; you will not be able to abide by the strict moral vows of Satsang.” Hearing this challenge, the brave and resolute Oghad Khuman stood up immediately, smashed his rifle against a stone, shattering it into three pieces, and accepted Swami as his guru, taking the sacred vows (Vartman). In this way, all three brothers became deeply anchored in Satsang. They frequently invited Sadguru Yoganand Swami to their home, learning sacred kirtans and absorbing spiritual discourses. Even today, Swami’s dokad-tamburo (musical instrument) and the sanctified footprints (prasadi charanaravind) bestowed lovingly by Shri Hari are preserved at their home.
On one occasion, the three brothers went to Bhavnagar on state business. They shared a close friendship with the ruler, King Vajesinhji. During a celebratory gathering in the royal court, bottles of liquor were brought out and served to the nobles. When King Vajesinhji insisted that the three brothers drink, they immediately unsheathed their swords and placed them before the king. Perplexed, King Vajesinhji asked, “Why are you doing this?” The three brothers replied resolutely, “Maharaj! Take these swords and sever our necks, and pour the liquor down our severed throats! But the mouth that has chanted the holy name of Bhagwan ‘Shri Swaminarayan’ shall never let liquor pass through it! Only when our heads fall severed to the ground will alcohol enter our lips, for we have now become true Satsangis!” Witnessing their unyielding conviction and devotion to their vows, King Vajesinhji immediately withdrew his insistence, for King Vajesinhji himself deeply appreciated the noble virtues of Satsang.
