Kanji Maharaj and the Sweet-Water Spring in Muli

Sadguru Brahmanand Swami was overseeing the grand construction of the Swaminarayan mandir in Muli. By the divine grace of Shri Hari, exceptional stones ideal for the temple construction were discovered in the quarry at Ramparada and were being transported to the site.

However, a serious hardship soon arose. The stone quarry was situated approximately three gaus (several miles) northwest of Muli village. Consequently, the stonecutters, labourers, and sadhus had to camp out at the quarry day and night. Water for drinking and bathing had to be transported from great distances. The nearby Jogasar lake held very little water, which was murky and infested with insects. Therefore, large vessels (maan) of fresh water had to be hauled from far away and used as sparingly as ghee. The acute shortage of water became a source of constant daily concern for Swami.

One afternoon, Swami spread a coarse blanket over a mound of excavated stones beneath the shade of a khakhra tree. While reading a page from a sacred text and contemplating the excavation work, he suddenly heard a distressed cry from a worker deep inside the quarry: “I am dying of thirst! Please, someone give me water!” Hearing this anguished plea, Swami was deeply moved. He immediately grabbed a water pot (lota) himself and rushed towards the workers carrying water. Taking water from their container, Swami climbed down into the quarry, sprinkled water on the fainting worker’s face, and lovingly quenched his thirst. When more water arrived, he ensured that all the other workers drank to their content, bringing them relief and peace.

While walking back towards the quarry with the water carriers, absorbed in thoughts of water scarcity and remembering Shriji Maharaj, Swami was approached by an elderly shepherd (Bharvad). The frail old man carried a long, thick staff (dang) in one hand, had a black blanket slung over his shoulder, and walked with slow, trembling steps. Greeting Swami with “Ram Ram”, he stood before him and asked, “What are so many of you doing here?” Swami replied, “We are quarrying stone for Bhagwan’s mandir.” The shepherd remarked, “That is wonderful, but where do you fetch drinking water for so many people?” Swami answered, “We bring water in pots from very far away, from the Bhedasar lake.” The shepherd exclaimed, “Oh! You bring it from such a distance? Towards the east in the northeast (Ishan) corner, just one field away, lies an ancient spring (virdi) of sweet water containing an abundance of water! When we were young boys coming from Khantadi to graze our calves, that spring had three or four small stone steps. We would descend and drink the sweet water, and we even made a small trough at the bank to water our sheep, goats, and cows. That small stepwell’s sweet spring is truly ancient and authentic! However, by now it must be completely buried under earth. Come, let me show you the place.”

Placing faith in the shepherd’s words, Swami accompanied him along with the sadhus and parshads. Crossing one field, they arrived at a large clump of thorny cactus (thor) and khakhra shrubs, where small saplings grew inside a hollow depression. Standing there, the shepherd struck the ground with his staff and said, “Right here lies the authentic, ancient sweet spring! Dig here, and you will find an abundance of very sweet water. It is not very deep; once you remove the silt, the water will reveal itself. Now, my ‘Ram Ram’ to the entire gathering!” Saying this, the shepherd began walking towards the north. Swami called out, “Gokali (shepherd friend)! Which village do you belong to?” The shepherd replied, “I live in Khantadi, the village you see straight ahead. But we are Maldharis (nomadic herders)—here today, somewhere else tomorrow; we are wanderers of the wilderness.” Swami inquired, “What is your name?” The shepherd said, “My name? My name is Kano.” Swami asked, “Where is your house in Khantadi?” The shepherd answered, “Behind the Thakar (Krishna) mandir.” With a final “Ram Ram”, he walked away towards Khantadi.

Returning to his lodgings, Swami carefully noted down the shepherd’s name and details. The next morning, clearing the cactus thickets and shrubbery, they began excavating the depression. After digging out layers of ancient silt, they uncovered a magnificent circular stepwell carved from a single stone, brimful of crystal-clear water! Drawing out the water into clean vessels, they filtered it with cloth and performed the sacred abhishek of the murti of Thakorji (Lalji). They poured some sanctified water back into the stepwell, and then drew fresh water, offered it to Thakorji, and drank it. The water was cool, sweet as sugar, and delicious; everyone was filled with joy! At the edge of the stepwell, Swami constructed a platform, consecrated a natural black stone murti of Hanumanji upon it, personally applied oil and sindoor, unfurled a sacred flag, and erected a thatched hermitage. Swami and the sadhus began residing there beside the sweet spring, opposite Hanumanji.

Desiring to honour Kana Bharvad with a ceremonial turban (paghdi), Swami obtained a fine Vankaneri dhoti with red borders and went to Khantadi with his sadhus and parshads. Approaching the village square (chora) where the Kathi Darbars were assembled, Swami asked, “Darbars! Where does Kano Gokali reside?” Hearing Swami’s voice, the Darbars rose in reverence, bowed at his feet, and warmly welcomed him to an honoured seat in the square. Swami explained, “On the outskirts of your village, we have set up a stone quarry for the mandir. Nearby, Kana Bharvad of your village came and showed us an ancient stepwell. Upon digging, we found the sweet Brahmakund stepwell exactly as he described. In appreciation, we have come to honour him with this turban. He lives near the Thakar mandir; please call him.” Swami showed them the red-bordered Vankaneri cloth.

Hearing this, all the Darbars exclaimed in astonishment, “Swami! No shepherd named Kano lives in this village, nor is there any shepherd’s home behind this chora (Thakar mandir). In fact, not a single Bharvad or Rabari lives in our entire village!” Everyone was stunned by this revelation. Brahmanand Swami remarked with devotion, “Then it was none other than the Thakorji enshrined in your village square—Kanji Maharaj Himself—who arrived in the guise of Kano Bharvad to show us the water! Therefore, all of you should worship and serve this Thakar Maharaj with deep love and devotion.” After delivering spiritual discourses, Swami and the sadhus greeted the assembly with ‘Jay Swaminarayan’ and departed. Swami was completely convinced that Shriji Maharaj Himself had manifested in the form of a shepherd to alleviate the hardships of His devotees.

Sadguru Brahmanand Swami composed this devotional couplet: Bhaktoni bhid bhāngvā, nautam Kāno nām..! Bhalo vesh bharvādno, sundar bhajavyo Shyām..!! (To dispel the distress of His devotees, assuming the novel name ‘Kano’; How wondrous a shepherd’s guise did Shyam so beautifully enact!)
