સુરેન્દ્રનગર જીલ્લામાં રત્નોની ખાણ્ય સમું મહાપૃસાદીનુ શીયાણી ગામ, જયાં શ્રીહરિ અનેકોઅનેક વખત પધારેલા છે. આ ગામમાં સદગુરુ રામદાસ સ્વામીનો જન્મ થયો હતો. પોતાનો ખડતલ, મજબૂત ને કાંઠાળો શરીરનો બાંધો હતો. શ્રીહરિ ઘણીવખત ફઇબાના મછીયાવ ગામે વારંવાર પધારતા એટલે પોતે તયા જઇને સંતો ભક્તોની સેવા કરીને સૌને રાજી કરતા. સેવાની જીવંત મૂરત સમા આ મુકતાતમાએ નાનીવયથી જ શ્રીહરિનો રાજીપો રળી લીધેલો. ગામના પૃસીદ્ધ શાસ્ત્રી શીવરામ વિપૃ શ્રીહરિના આશ્રીત થતા એમણે પોતાનું ઘર ને મંદિર બનાવવા દાનમાં દીધુ, એટલે ભોળાનંદ સ્વામી ગામમાં મંદિરનુ બાંધકામ વગેરે દેખભાળ રાખતા, એ સમયે પણ મંદિરની ખુબ સેવાઓ કરી ને શ્રીહરિને તથા સંતોને ખુબ રાજી કર્યા.
ગઢપુરમાં શ્રીગોપીનાથજી મહારાજનું મંદિર નુ કામ ચાલતું હતું એ વખતે પણ પોતે મોટા મોટા પત્થરો ઉપાડીને કડીયા-મીસ્ત્રીઓને પહોંચાડી ને સેવા કરતા હતા. એકદિવસ સદગુરુ ગુણાતિતાનંદ સ્વામી મંદિરના બારણા ઉપર મોટો પત્થર કડીયાઓ સાથે મુક્તા હતા એવે વખતે સ્વામીના હાથની કોણી મોટા પત્થરની નીચે દબાઇ ગઇ ને પત્થર એકલા હાથે ફરે એમ ન હતું આ વખતે શ્રીહરિએ સાદ કર્યો. એજ વખતે સમયસૂચકતા વાપરીને તુરંત જ ફાળિયાનો ગોટો વાળીને પોતાના માથે મુકીને પત્થર અધ્ધર કરીને ગુણાતિતાનંદ સ્વામીના હાથને મોટી ઇજા થતી બચાવ્યા. તેઓ શરીરે ઉચાને ભરાવદાર હતા તે સ્વામીને લાગ્યું નહી ને મોટી ઇજા ટળી ગઇ. શ્રીહરિએ એ વખતે એમની પાસે આવીને એમનો વાહો ઠપકાર્યો અને રાજી થઇને બોલ્યા કે વાહ..! ધન્ય છે તમને અને તમને જન્મ આપનાર તમારા માત-પિતાને..! તમારી શરીરની ઉચાઇ આજ સત્સંગમાં મોટા સંતના અર્થે કામ આવીને તમારો દેહ સાર્થક થયો.
થોડે સમયે સંસારથી વૈરાગ્ય થતા પોતે વિરક્ત થઇને ગઢપુરમા સદગુરુ મુકતાનંદ સ્વામી પાસે પાર્ષદ થઇને રહ્યા. એમણે સાધુ થવા પુછયુ ત્યારે મુકતાનંદ સ્વામીએ એમને કહ્યું કે હમણાં તમે ધર્મકુળનુ ગાડુ હાંકો, સમય આવ્યે મહારાજ તમને દીક્ષા આપીને સાધુ કરશે.
છ-આઠ મહીને સાધુ દિક્ષા લેતી વખતે મુકતાનંદ સ્વામીએ શ્રીજીમહારાજને કહ્યું કે હે મહારાજ..! તમે નંદ સંતો બહુ કર્યા હવે દાસ પંકિતના સંત કરો. શ્રીહરિ રાજી થયા મોટા ભાઇરામદાસ સ્વામી જેવા જ ત્યાગ વૈરાગ્ય અને સેવાના ગૂણો જોઇને સ્વામીની યાદી તરીકે એમને મંત્ર આપીને જનોઇ દીધીને રામદાસ સ્વામી એવું નામ રાખ્યું.
રામદાસ સ્વામી શ્રીહરિ અને સંતો ને રાજી કરવા ચાતુર્માસ વગેરેમા આકરા નિયમો લેતા. એકવખત ઘી-દુધ વગેરે નહી જમવાનો નિયમ લીધો હતો. રામદાસ સ્વામી એવે સમયે જામનગર બાજુના ગામડાઓમા વિચરણ કરતા હતા. તયા લીલા શાકભાજી મળવા મુશ્કેલ હતા તો ચાતુર્માસ આંખોય છાશ પીઇને જ ભજન કરીને પસાર કર્યો.
ચાતુર્માસ પુરો થતા સ્વામી ગઢપુર આવ્યા એ વખતે સંતોની પંકિતએ જમવા બેઠા ત્યારે સદગુરુ ગુણાતિતાનંદ સ્વામી લાડુ પીરસવા પધાર્યા તો એમણે પત્તર અધ્ધર કરી લીધું ત્યારે સ્વામીએ કહ્યું કે રામદાસ, અમે તમને કયા વારે વારે પીરસવા નો મોકો મળે છે? તમે આજ તો તમારો નિયમ ભાંગીનેય પણ બે લાડુ તો લયો, એમ કરી ને પૃેમે કરીને સ્વામીએ પરાણે બે લાડુ આપ્યા ત્યારે જ લીધા.
આમ પોતે નિસ્વાદી વર્તમાનને જીવનભર અણીશુદ્ધપણે પાળતા.
રામદાસ સ્વામી ગઢપુરમાં માંદા સંતોની પણ ખુબ સેવા કરતા. દિવસે માંદા સંતોની ચાકરી કરેને રાતે ઘેલા નદીએથી પત્થર ઉચકીને લાવી લાવીને દિવસ સારુ તૈયાર રાખતા. એકદિવસ મધરાતે પત્થર મુક્તા અવાજ આવ્યો તે શ્રીહરિ જાગી ગયાને તુરંત જ હાકલો કર્યો કે કોણ છે? ત્યારે પોતે બોલ્યા કે મહારાજ એ તો હુ તમારો રામદાસ..! દિવસે માંદા સાધુઓની જાયગાએ રહેતા મને મંદિરની સેવા કરવાનો મોકો નથી મળતો તે અત્યારે સેવા કરતો હતો, માફ કરજયો તમારી નિદ્રામાં વિઘ્ન થયું.
શ્રીહરિ ઘણા રાજી થઇને ભેટ્યા ને માથે બે હાથ મુકી બોલ્યા કે ધન્ય છે તમારી શ્રદ્ધાને, દિવસે માંદા સંતોની સેવા કરો છો અને રાત્રે મંદિર સારુ પત્થરો લાવીને જીવન સાર્થક કરો છો. તમારી અથાક સેવાથી અમે બહુ પૃસન્ન છીએ.

सद्गुरु रामदास स्वामी और उनकी अथक सेवा
सुरेन्द्रनगर जिले में रत्नों की खान के समान महाप्रसादी का पावन ग्राम शियाणी स्थित है, जहाँ श्रीहरि ने अनेकों बार अपने चरणकमल रखे थे। इसी पवित्र गाँव में सद्गुरु रामदास स्वामी का प्राकट्य हुआ था। उनका शारीरिक गठन अत्यंत बलिष्ठ, सुदृढ़ और ऊँचा-पूरा था। श्रीहरि प्रायः फईबा के गाँव मछियाव पधारते थे, तब वे वहाँ जाकर संतों और भक्तों की निष्काम भाव से सेवा करते और सबको अत्यंत प्रसन्न रखते थे। सेवा की साक्षात मूर्ति समान इस पुण्यात्मा मुक्तात्मा ने बाल्यकाल से ही श्रीहरि की असीम प्रसन्नता अर्जित कर ली थी। जब गाँव के प्रख्यात शास्त्री शिवराम विप्र श्रीहरि के आश्रित बने, तो उन्होंने अपना घर मंदिर निर्माण के लिए दान कर दिया। उस समय सद्गुरु भोलानंद स्वामी मंदिर निर्माण का कार्य संभालते थे। तब रामदास स्वामी ने मंदिर निर्माण में भी तन-मन से सेवा करके श्रीहरि और संतों को अत्यधिक प्रसन्न किया।
जब गढ़पुर में श्री गोपीनाथजी महाराज के भव्य मंदिर का निर्माण कार्य चल रहा था, तब भी वे स्वयं भारी-भारी पत्थरों को उठाकर कारीगरों और राजमिस्त्रियों तक पहुँचाने की कठिन सेवा करते थे। एक दिन सद्गुरु गुणातीतानंद स्वामी कारीगरों के साथ मिलकर मंदिर के मुख्य द्वार की चौखट पर एक विशाल भारी पत्थर रख रहे थे। उसी समय अचानक स्वामीजी के हाथ की कोहनी उस भारी पत्थर के नीचे दब गई। वह पत्थर इतना भारी था कि किसी अकेले के प्रयास से हिल भी नहीं सकता था। स्थिति की गंभीरता देख श्रीहरि ने तुरंत पुकार लगाई! उसी क्षण समय की नजाकत को भांपते हुए रामदास स्वामी ने बड़ी सूझबूझ से अपना फेंटा (साफा) मोड़कर अपने सिर पर रखा और अपनी पूरी शक्ति से उस विशाल पत्थर को ऊपर उठा दिया, जिससे गुणातीतानंद स्वामी का हाथ किसी गंभीर चोट से बाल-बाल बच गया। उनका शरीर काफी ऊँचा और बलिष्ठ था, जिसके कारण पत्थर का भार स्वामीजी पर नहीं पड़ा और एक बड़ा संकट टल गया। तब श्रीहरि तुरंत उनके निकट पधारे, उनकी पीठ थपथपाई और अत्यंत प्रसन्न होकर बोले, “वाह! धन्य हैं आप और धन्य हैं आपको जन्म देने वाले आपके माता-पिता! आज आपकी यह ऊँची और सुदृढ़ देह सत्संग में एक महान संत के काम आई और आपका यह मनुष्य देह आज पूर्णतः सार्थक हो गया!”
कुछ समय पश्चात सांसारिक प्रपंचों से वैराग्य होने पर वे विरक्त होकर गढ़पुर में सद्गुरु मुक्तानंद स्वामी के सान्निध्य में पार्षद बनकर रहने लगे। जब उन्होंने साधु दीक्षा लेने की इच्छा व्यक्त की, तब मुक्तानंद स्वामी ने उनसे कहा, “अभी आप धर्मकुल का रथ (गाड़ी) हाँकिए, उचित समय आने पर महाराज स्वयं आपको दीक्षा देकर साधु बनाएँगे।”
छह-आठ महीने बाद जब साधु दीक्षा का पावन अवसर आया, तब मुक्तानंद स्वामी ने श्रीजी महाराज से प्रार्थना की, “हे महाराज! आपने ‘नंद’ पदवी के तो बहुत से संत बनाए, अब ‘दास’ पंक्ति के संत भी बनाइए।” श्रीहरि अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए। उनके भीतर बड़े भाई रामदास स्वामी जैसा ही अप्रतिम त्याग, वैराग्य और सेवाभाव देखकर उनकी स्मृति स्वरूप श्रीहरि ने उन्हें गुरुमंत्र देकर यज्ञोपवीत (जनेऊ) धारण कराया और उनका नाम ‘रामदास स्वामी’ रखा।
रामदास स्वामी श्रीहरि और संतों को रिझाने के लिए चातुर्मास आदि पावन पर्वों पर अत्यंत कठोर नियमों का पालन करते थे। एक बार उन्होंने चातुर्मास में घी-दूध आदि न लेने का कठिन नियम ग्रहण किया। उस समय रामदास स्वामी जामनगर के आसपास के गाँवों में विचरण कर रहे थे। वहाँ उन दिनों हरी शाक-भाजी मिलना अत्यंत कठिन था, फिर भी उन्होंने पूरा चातुर्मास केवल छाछ पीकर और निरंतर भजन-कीर्तन करते हुए व्यतीत किया।
चातुर्मास पूर्ण होने पर जब स्वामी गढ़पुर पधारे और संतों की पंक्ति में भोजन के लिए विराजे, तब सद्गुरु गुणातीतानंद स्वामी स्वयं लड्डू परोसने पधारे। रामदास स्वामी ने अपनी पत्तल तुरंत ऊँची कर ली। तब गुणातीतानंद स्वामी ने स्नेहपूर्वक कहा, “रामदास! हमें आपको बार-बार परोसने का सौभाग्य कहाँ मिलता है? आज तो आप अपना नियम थोड़ा शिथिल करके भी कम से कम दो लड्डू तो ग्रहण कीजिए!” स्वामीजी के असीम प्रेम और आग्रह को मान देकर ही उन्होंने अंततः वे दो लड्डू स्वीकार किए।
इस प्रकार, वे आजीवन निःस्वादि वर्तमान (स्वादजय के नियम) का अत्यंत निष्ठा और शुद्धि से पालन करते रहे।
रामदास स्वामी गढ़पुर में रुग्ण और अस्वस्थ संतों की भी दिन-रात सेवा करते थे। दिनभर वे बीमार संतों की शुश्रूषा में लीन रहते और रात्रि के समय घेला नदी से भारी-भारी पत्थर सिर पर ढोकर लाते, ताकि दिन में मंदिर निर्माण के लिए पत्थर तैयार रहें। एक दिन आधी रात को पत्थर नीचे रखते समय भारी आवाज हुई, जिससे श्रीहरि की निद्रा भंग हो गई। श्रीहरि ने तुरंत पुकारा, “वहाँ कौन है?” तब स्वामी अत्यंत संकोच से बोले, “महाराज! यह तो आपका दास रामदास है! दिन में बीमार साधुओं की सेवा में रहने के कारण मुझे मंदिर की सेवा का अवसर नहीं मिल पाता, इसलिए मैं इस समय सेवा कर रहा था। क्षमा करें, मेरी वजह से आपकी निद्रा में विघ्न पड़ा।”
यह सुनकर श्रीहरि अत्यंत गद्गद हो गए, उन्होंने आगे बढ़कर स्वामी को हृदय से लगा लिया और उनके मस्तक पर दोनों कर-कमल रखकर बोले, “धन्य है आपकी निष्ठा और श्रद्धा! दिन में आप बीमार संतों की सेवा करते हैं और रात में मंदिर के लिए पत्थर ढोकर अपने जीवन को सार्थक करते हैं। आपकी इस अथक और निष्काम सेवा से हम आप पर परम प्रसन्न हैं!”

Sadguru Ramdas Swami and His Tireless Devotional Service
In the Surendranagar district lies the sacred village of Shiyani, celebrated like a veritable mine of spiritual gems—a holy site blessed by the sanctified footprints (maha-prasadi) of Shri Hari, who graced it with His presence countless times. It was in this holy village that Sadguru Ramdas Swami was born. He possessed a robust, towering, and exceptionally strong physical frame. Shri Hari frequently visited the village of Machhiyav to visit His paternal aunt (Fuiba). Ramdas Swami would often journey there to selflessly serve the holy sadhus and devotees, bringing immense joy to all. A living embodiment of selfless service, this exalted soul had won the supreme pleasure of Shri Hari from his very youth. When the renowned village scholar, Shastri Shivram Vipra, surrendered at the lotus feet of Shri Hari, he donated his personal home for the construction of a temple. At that time, Sadguru Bholanand Swami was overseeing the temple construction, and Ramdas Swami rendered immense physical service, bringing great delight to Shri Hari and the sadhus.
Later, when the monumental construction of the temple of Shri Gopinathji Maharaj was underway in Gadhpur (Gadhada), Ramdas Swami personally lifted and transported massive stones, delivering them directly to the masons and artisans. One day, Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami was assisting the artisans in positioning a massive stone above the main entrance lintel of the temple. Suddenly, Swami’s elbow was trapped underneath the enormous weight of the stone. The slab was far too heavy for a single person to shift, and sensing the imminent danger, Shri Hari urgently called out! Displaying remarkable presence of mind, Ramdas Swami swiftly rolled his turban into a head-cushion, placed it beneath the colossal stone, and used his immense physical strength to heave the stone upward. His timely intervention prevented Gunatitanand Swami’s arm from suffering a devastating crush injury. Blessed with a tall and muscular physique, Ramdas Swami bore the weight easily, and a major catastrophe was averted. Shri Hari immediately came over, patted him affectionately on the back, and remarked with divine joy: “Wonderful! Blessed are you, and blessed are the parents who gave birth to you! Today, your tall and powerful physique came to the aid of a paramount saint in Satsang, and your bodily existence has truly attained its highest purpose!”
Soon afterward, developing deep renunciation towards worldly attachments, he renounced home and family to reside in Gadhpur as a dedicated attendant (parshad) under Sadguru Muktanand Swami. When he expressed his earnest desire to receive monastic initiation, Muktanand Swami instructed him, “For now, drive the cart of the divine Dharmakul (the holy family of Bhagwan Swaminarayan); when the opportune moment arrives, Maharaj Himself will initiate you as a sadhu.”
Six to eight months later, when the time came for his initiation into the monastic order, Muktanand Swami prayed to Shriji Maharaj, “O Maharaj! You have initiated many eminent sadhus bearing the title ‘Nand’; now please initiate sadhus belonging to the ‘Das’ (servant) lineage.” Shri Hari was immensely pleased. Witnessing within him the same extraordinary virtues of detachment, renunciation, and selfless service as the revered elder Bhai Ramdas Swami, Shri Hari bestowed upon him the sacred mantra, invested him with the sacred thread (yagnopavita), and named him ‘Ramdas Swami’ in honour of that spiritual heritage.
To please Shri Hari and the sadhus, Ramdas Swami embraced rigorous vows, particularly during the sacred period of Chaturmas. On one occasion, he resolved to completely abstain from milk, ghee, and dairy products. During that time, Swami was touring the remote villages around the Jamnagar region, where green vegetables were nearly impossible to obtain. Undeterred, Ramdas Swami sustained himself throughout the entire four months of Chaturmas solely on buttermilk while remaining continuously immersed in devotional chanting and meditation.
When Chaturmas concluded, Swami returned to Gadhpur and sat in the dining rows among the sadhus. Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami came forward to serve sweet laddoos. Out of ingrained austerity, Ramdas Swami lifted his leaf-plate away to decline the rich sweet. Noticing this, Gunatitanand Swami remarked affectionately, “Ramdas, how often do we get the blessed opportunity to serve you? Today, even if it means momentarily relaxing your strict vow, please accept at least two laddoos!” Overwhelmed by Swami’s boundless love, Ramdas Swami relented and accepted the laddoos. Throughout his life, he observed the vow of Niswadi (conquest over taste) with flawless purity.
In Gadhpur, Ramdas Swami also dedicated himself wholeheartedly to serving ill and ailing sadhus. Throughout the day, he lovingly attended to the needs of sick sadhus, and during the quiet hours of the night, he carried heavy stones on his head all the way from the Ghela River bed so that construction materials would be ready for the temple workers in the morning. One midnight, as he set down a massive stone, a loud sound echoed, waking Shri Hari from His rest. Shri Hari called out, “Who is there?” Ramdas Swami humbly replied, “Maharaj, it is your servant, Ramdas! Because I tend to the ailing sadhus throughout the day, I find no time to serve in the temple construction; hence, I was carrying stones during the night. Please forgive me for disturbing Your divine sleep.”
Shri Hari was filled with boundless joy. He lovingly embraced Ramdas Swami, placed both His holy hands upon his head, and blessed him: “Blessed is your steadfast devotion! By day you nurse the sick sadhus, and by night you haul heavy stones for the mandir, sanctifying your entire life. We are supremely pleased with your tireless devotion and selfless service!”
