સાવદાના શ્યામદાસ કંદોઈ અને શ્રીજી મહારાજની ચોકી
મહારાષ્ટ્રમા બૂરાનપુર પાસે સાવદા ગામ છે. સદગુરુ મંજુકેશાનંદ સ્વામી અને સદગુરુ વિજ્ઞાનાનંદ સ્વામીએ દેશમાં વિચરણ કરીને હરિભક્તો ને દ્રઢ સત્સંગ કરાવેલો. સાંવદા ગામમાં બજારમા કરીયાણા ગંધીયાણા વગેરે તથા બીજા વ્યવસાયની ઘણી દુકાનો હતી. આ દુકાનોની વચ્ચે એક પરમભકત એવા શ્યામદાસ કંદોઈની દુકાન હતી. તેઓ દિવસે પોતાની દૂકાને મીઠાઇ વેચે ને રાત્રે જરુરિયાત પૃમાણે પોતાના ઘરે બનાવતા હતા.
એક દિવસની સાંજના સાંવદા ગામ સૌ કોઇ પોતપોતાના ધંધા રોજગાર વગેરે આટોપીને પોતપોતાના ઘરે ગયા. આંખુય ગામ રાત્રીના અંધકારમાં જંપી ગયું. ગામની બજારમા ફાનસે ધીમાધીમા દીવાઓ ટગમગતા હતા. સૌ કોઇ બધા ગાઢ નિદ્રામાં પોઢી ગયા હતા. હરિભક્ત શ્યામદાસ પણ પોતાની દૂકાન વધાવીને સાંજે ઘરે ગયા. પોતાનો નિત્યકૃમ પતાવીને શ્રીહરિનુ સ્મરણ કરતા થકા પથારીએ પોઢ્યા. એ દિવસે શ્યામદાસની દૂકાન સામેના દૂકાનવાળા કંદોઈ તો મીઠાઈ બનાવવા તાવડે બેઠા. રાત્રે અધરાતનો સમય થવા આવ્યો હશે એ સમયે તેઓએ એક આશ્ચર્યકારી ઘટના જોઈ. પાડોશી દુકાનદાર મનમા વિચારે કે ‘અરે, આ શું ? શ્યામદાસની દુકાન આગળ પોલીસની ચોકી ? આવું તો ક્યારેય નથી બન્યું. હશે, શ્યામદાસની દુકાનમાં તિજોરી ઊતરી હશે તેથી પોલીસ ચોકિયાત કરતો હશે.’ તાવડા પર મીઠાઈ બનાવતાં બનાવતાં કંદોઈ વિચારતા હતા અને પ્રભાત થવા આવ્યું. પોલીસ તો કંદોઈની દુકાન તરફ આવી ને કહે કે… “કંદોઈ મહારાજ, અમે પોલીસ નથી. અમે તો ભગવાન સ્વામિનારાયણ છીએ. અમારા ભક્ત શ્યામદાસ ઉતાવળમાં દુકાનને તાળું મારવાનું ભૂલી ગયા તેથી અમે પોલીસના વેશે આખી રાત દુકાનની ચોકી કરી. અમે અમારા ભક્તની તમામ ચિંતા રાખીએ છીએ.
કંદોઈને થયું, ‘આ ભગવાન તો ખરેખરા ભક્તવત્સલ છે, પોતાના ભક્તની રક્ષામાં કેવા ખડે પગે હાજર રહે છે !! ધન્ય છે શ્યામદાસ, તને આ પૃગટ સ્વામિનારાયણ ભગવાન મળ્યા ! સ્વામિનારાયણ ભગવાનની ઘણી મહેર કહેવાય !
સવારે શ્યામદાસને સહુએ વાત કરી ત્યારે પોતે ભાવવિભોર થઇ ગયા ને કહેવા લાગ્યા કે મારી અબૂધની એક ભૂલ્ય થી મારા ભગવાનને આખી રાત મારી દુકાનનો ચોંકી પેરો કરવો પડ્યો. સહુ દુકાનદારોને ઘણો ગુણ આવ્યો ને સહુ સત્સંગી થયા.

सावदा के श्यामदास कंदोई और श्रीजी महाराज का पहरा
महाराष्ट्र में बुरहानपुर के समीप सावदा गाँव है। सद्गुरु मंजुकेशानंद स्वामी और सद्गुरु विज्ञानानंद स्वामी ने उस क्षेत्र में विचरण करके हरिभक्तों को दृढ़ सत्संग कराया था। सावदा गाँव के बाज़ार में किराना, सुगंधित द्रव्यों आदि के विभिन्न व्यवसायों की अनेक दुकानें थीं। इन्हीं दुकानों के बीच एक अनन्य परमभक्त श्यामदास कंदोई (हलवाई) की दुकान थी। वे दिन में अपनी दुकान पर मिठाइयाँ बेचते और रात को आवश्यकतानुसार अपने घर पर ताज़ी मिठाइयाँ बनाते थे।
एक दिन शाम के समय सावदा गाँव के सभी व्यापारी अपने-अपने काम-धंधे समेटकर घर लौट गए। संपूर्ण गाँव रात्रि के सन्नाटे और अंधकार में शांत हो गया। बाज़ार में लालटेन के धीमे-धीमे दीपक टिमटिमा रहे थे। सभी लोग गहरी निद्रा में सो चुके थे। हरिभक्त श्यामदास भी शाम को अपनी दुकान मंगल (बंद) करके घर चले गए। अपने नित्य-नियम और पूजा-पाठ संपन्न करके, श्रीहरि का स्मरण करते हुए वे शयन कर गए। परंतु उस दिन श्यामदास की दुकान के सामने वाले एक अन्य हलवाई रात को कड़ाही चढ़ाकर मिठाई बनाने बैठे थे। आधी रात का समय होने को आया, तभी उन्होंने एक अत्यंत आश्चर्यजनक दृश्य देखा। पड़ोसी दुकानदार मन में सोचने लगा: ‘अरे, यह क्या? श्यामदास की दुकान के आगे पुलिस का पहरा? ऐसा तो पहले कभी नहीं हुआ! हो सकता है, श्यामदास की दुकान में कोई भारी तिजोरी आई होगी, इसलिए पुलिस सिपाही पहरेदारी कर रहा होगा।’ कड़ाही पर मिठाई बनाते-बनाते वह हलवाई विचार करता रहा और देखते-ही-देखते भोर होने लगी। प्रातःकाल वह पुलिस सिपाही उस हलवाई की दुकान की ओर आया और बोला: “कंदोई महाराज! हम कोई पुलिस नहीं हैं। हम तो स्वयं भगवान स्वामिनारायण हैं! हमारे अनन्य भक्त श्यामदास कल शाम जल्दबाज़ी में दुकान पर ताला लगाना भूल गए थे, इसलिए हमने पुलिस के वेश में रातभर उनकी दुकान की चौकीदारी की है। हम अपने भक्तों की हर प्रकार से चिंता और रक्षा करते हैं।”
हलवाई विस्मयचकित रह गया और सोचने लगा, ‘यह भगवान तो सचमुच परम भक्तवत्सल हैं! अपने भक्त की रक्षा के लिए वे स्वयं रातभर पहरा देते हुए उपस्थित रहे! धन्य हो श्यामदास, जिन्हें ऐसे साक्षात् प्रकट स्वामिनारायण भगवान मिले! स्वामिनारायण भगवान की कितनी असीम कृपा है!’
सुबह जब सभी ने श्यामदास को यह बात बताई, तो वे अश्रुपूर्ण नेत्रों से भावविभोर हो उठे और गद्गद कंठ से कहने लगे, “मुझ अज्ञानी की एक छोटी-सी भूल के कारण मेरे कृपालु प्रभु को रातभर मेरी दुकान का पहरा देना पड़ा!” यह अद्भुत चमत्कार देखकर बाज़ार के सभी दुकानदारों के हृदय में भगवान का अनन्य महिमा-भाव जागृत हो गया और वे सभी सत्संगी बन गए।

Shyamdas Kandoi of Savda and Shriji Maharaj’s Night Watch
Near Burhanpur in Maharashtra lies the village of Savda. Sadguru Manjukeshanand Swami and Sadguru Vignananand Swami had toured that region and instilled steadfast Satsang into the hearts of the devotees. In the village market of Savda, there were numerous shops of groceries, spices, perfumes, and other trades. Among these shops was the sweet shop of a devout devotee named Shyamdas Kandoi (confectioner). During the day, he sold sweets at his shop, and at night, he prepared fresh sweets at home as per demand.
One evening, all the merchants in Savda wrapped up their daily businesses and returned to their homes. The entire village settled quietly into the darkness of the night. In the village market, lanterns flickered dimly, and everyone fell into deep sleep. Devotee Shyamdas also closed his shop for the day and went home. Completing his daily spiritual routines and remembering Shri Hari, he went to sleep. That night, another confectioner whose shop was situated right opposite Shyamdas’s sat by his boiling pan (tavdo) to prepare sweets. Around midnight, he witnessed an astonishing sight. The neighboring shopkeeper thought to himself: ‘Oh, what is this? A policeman guarding Shyamdas’s shop? Such a thing has never happened before! Perhaps a heavy cash safe was delivered to Shyamdas’s shop, which is why a policeman is keeping watch.’ While making sweets over the fire, the confectioner continued to wonder as dawn approached. At daybreak, the policeman walked over to the confectioner’s shop and said: “O Kandoi Maharaj, We are not a policeman. We are Bhagwan Swaminarayan Himself! Our devotee Shyamdas forgot to lock his shop in haste, so We assumed the guise of a policeman and stood guard outside his shop all night. We take complete care of Our devotees.”
The confectioner was struck with awe and thought, ‘This God is truly Bhaktavatsal—lovingly devoted to His devotees! How selflessly He stood on guard all night to protect His devotee! Blessed are you, Shyamdas, who has found the manifest Bhagwan Swaminarayan! Boundless is the grace of Bhagwan Swaminarayan!’
In the morning, when the neighboring shopkeepers narrated this divine occurrence to Shyamdas, he was overwhelmed with deep devotion and emotion. With tearful eyes, he cried, “Because of an ignorant mistake of a foolish person like me, my beloved Lord had to stand guard all night outside my shop!” Witnessing this profound divinity and care, all the local shopkeepers recognized the divine glory of the Lord and joyfully embraced Satsang.
