Gumanji of Kauka and the Sweet Neem Tree

In the Dholka region lies a village named Kauka, where the chieftain (Darbar) Akherajji Vaghela and his noble wife, Virakunvarba, resided. At that time, about twenty other Vaghela Rajput families also lived in the village. This devoted couple possessed an intense spiritual inclination and yearning for liberation (mumukshutva). In Samvat 1844, from the holy womb of Virakunvarba, an exalted soul named Gumanji took birth. He went on to become one of the most obedient and foremost among the fourteen personal attendants (hajuri parshads) of Shri Hari. Later in life, he willingly renounced his royal status, wealth, power, and worldly honor, dedicating twenty whole years of his life in constant, intimate devotional service to Shri Hari. Sadguru Adharanand Swami has reverently immortalized him in the ‘Haricharitamrut Sagar’: “Kauka ke Gumanji nama, kshatri grasvant nij thama..! Satsang Hari mile ja divase, Hari ki sev me rahe ta din se…!!” (Named Gumanji of Kauka, a noble kshatriya landholder in his realm; from the very day he met the Lord through Satsang, he remained forever in the divine service of Hari!)

When Shri Hari performed the grand yajna in Jetalpur, several Brahmins from Kauka village attended the auspicious celebrations, had His holy darshan, and surrendered to Shri Hari’s shelter. Upon returning home, they proclaimed at the royal court of the Darbargadh that the Supreme Lord Himself had manifest on earth in this age of Kaliyuga, re-establishing dharma just as in Satyayuga. Countless souls were effortlessly entering divine samadhi (trance) by His divine will, and devotees were peacefully ascending to the eternal Akshardham while fully conscious, even foretelling their departure in advance. Listening to these accounts of Shri Hari’s supreme divinity and boundless glory deeply touched the young prince Gumanji. An intense spiritual yearning arose within him to meet Shri Hari in person.

In Samvat 1866, when Shri Hari performed the magnificent Mahayajna (Vishnuyag) at Dabhan, Gumanji joined the pilgrim party from his village. At his very first glance of Shri Hari, just as a serpent casts off its slough without hesitation, his mind completely detangled itself from all worldly attachments. His soul became deeply captivated by the charming and blissful divine form of Mohanvar Shriji Maharaj, and he pledged himself to Shri Hari’s service forever. During the Dabhan yajna, Laduba and Jivuba offered the foremost worship to Shri Hari, adorning Him with exquisite gold ornaments worth twenty-four hundred rupees. Gumanji was blessed to witness this glorious sight. Approximately sixty years later, while composing the poetic scripture ‘Haricharitra Chintamani’ (in Kiran 105), he beautifully reminisced about that divine form: “Tena kada kanaka-na bhari, shobhe sundar-var sukh-kari..! Hata chovis-so-na chitta-chor, perya preet shu Dharma-kishor…!! Alaiya-khachar lavya het aani, perya chankala Sharang-pani..! Hata adhar-so na e eh, perya Prabhu raji thai teh…!!” (Heavy gold bangles adorned the blissful Lord; the enchanting son of Dharmadev lovingly wore the ornaments worth twenty-four hundred rupees. Alaiya Khachar brought anklets with great love, which the Lord gladly wore, delighting in their heartfelt devotion.)

With such exquisite verses, he immortalized the captivating beauty of the Lord who lovingly embraced the devotion of His followers. When the Dabhan yajna concluded and everyone prepared to return to their villages, the residents of Kauka humbly prayed to Shriji Maharaj, “O Maharaj! Please grace our village Kauka with Your holy presence, and kindly bring our Gumanji along with You.” Shriji Maharaj was pleased and graciously granted their wish. The villagers returned, but Gumanji remained behind in continuous, loving servitude of Shri Hari.

Once in the auspicious month of Vaishakh, Shri Hari was touring the countryside along with the sadhus and devotees, imparting the joy of His divine darshan. Journeying through Vejalka, Zankhada, and Dholi, He arrived at Ambliyara. Devotees from both Kauka and Dholka arrived there for His darshan, and both groups lovingly insisted that He visit their village first. Maharaj smiled and replied, “How can We visit both villages simultaneously? Tomorrow morning, We will leave the reins of Our beloved mare, Manki, loose. Whichever road she chooses, We will head there first, and then visit the other village afterward.”

Manki seemed to understand the earnest prayers of the devotees of Kauka and turned directly onto the path toward Kauka. Shri Hari then took the devotees of Dholka along as well. Amidst joyous celebrations, music, and devotional fanfare, a grand welcoming procession (samaiyu) was held as Shri Hari entered Kauka. Towards the west of the village stood a grove of lush, dense neem trees, where arrangements were made for Shri Hari and the assembly of sadhus to rest. All the villagers availed themselves of the divine darshan and the merit of serving the Lord. Gam pashchime limbado saro, karyo Krishne tya jaine utaro..!!”

Since Gumanji was also accompanying Shri Hari, mother Virakunvarba was overwhelmed with celestial joy. On behalf of all the female devotees, she performed the ritual worship of Shri Hari, showering Him with sanctified grains of rice and waving auspicious lights in devotion. The ruler, King Akherajji, celebrated the divine arrival by having twenty maunds (approx. 400 kg) of rich sweets (laddus) prepared, lovingly serving Shri Hari and all the devotees. The bitter neem tree beneath which Shri Hari sat on a cot (dholiyo) was miraculously rendered sweet by His divine grace that very day. Through this glorious revelation of His supreme divinity and majestic power, all new seekers acquired firm conviction in His status as Supreme Purushottam Narayan Himself. Shri Hari stayed there for two days before departing for Dholka to fulfill the loving desires of the devotees there.
