The Ascetic of Van-vicharan and the Bondage of Vasana
Once, Shri Hari was presiding over a spiritual assembly beneath the holy neem tree (Limb-taru) in the Darbargadh of Dada Khachar in Gadhada. Eminent Nand saints and revered Kathi devotees—including Darbar Jhinabhai of Panchala, Sura Khachar, Somla Khachar, Moka Khachar, Jiva Khachar, and Dada Khachar—were seated respectfully before Shri Hari. At that time, seated upon the wooden dais, Pragji Purani was reciting the sacred discourse from the Fifth Canto of Shrimad Bhagavatam. Reflecting upon the dialogue between Jadbharat and King Rahugan, Shri Hari remarked, “This divine narrative is truly wondrous. We are particularly fond of this history of Jadbharat. When We renounced home at the tender age of eleven and embarked upon Our extensive forest pilgrimage (van-vicharan), We arrived at a vast, scenic lake during Our travels through the deep wilderness. On the banks of this lake, an elderly ascetic (bavaji) resided in a humble hermitage (madhuli). We bathed in the pure, pristine waters of the lake and sat beneath a tree to rest.”
“When the ascetic noticed Us, he came over immediately and sat beside Us. We greeted him with ‘Namo Narayan’, welcomed him with due reverence, and engaged in conversation.”
“We inquired of him, ‘How far is human settlement from here, and what arrangements do you have for food and water?’ The ascetic replied, ‘A small village is situated about three to four kos (around six to eight miles) from here. I walk there to beg for alms (bhiksha) and return, spending the remainder of my life here in solitude.’”
“Wearily, the ascetic added, ‘Since the village is so distant, sometimes I become completely exhausted from the journey and simply choose to fast.’ Shri Hari continued, ‘We were intrigued, so We asked the ascetic: Then why do you not reside closer to that village? Why do you endure this hardship every single day?’ To this, the ascetic retorted, ‘Boy, what do you understand?! On the banks of this lake, I have planted banyan trees; they are dear to me just like my own sons! Leaving them behind, where could I possibly go?!’”
Narrating this incident, Shriji Maharaj imparted a profound spiritual truth: “Just as the jiva (soul), having attained this invaluable human body, becomes entangled in the worldly bondage of bodily relatives, similarly it becomes deeply bound by subtle desires and attachments (vasana) even to insignificant things such as trees, foliage, animals, or petty mundane objects. It is this very vasana that becomes the root cause of the soul’s endless cycle of birth and death.”
