The Unyielding Faith of Sunderji and Kanji Sheth of Barwala

Sunderji and Kanji Sheth of Barwala village were two brothers who managed the administrative affairs of Denderda village on behalf of the local ruler (Darbar). Once, they traveled to Gadhpur for the divine darshan of Shri Gopinathji Maharaj. At that time, Adi Acharya Shri Raghuvirji Maharaj was gracing Gadhpur, so Kothari Bhaktivallabh Swami arranged for the two brothers to have his holy darshan as well. Witnessing Acharya Maharaj’s humility, deep reverence for saints, and profound gentleness, both brothers were deeply touched and inspired. They embraced the moral vows (vartaman) from Acharya Maharaj and became devout Satsangis. During their visit, Kothari Swami discoursed on the Vachanamrut, emphasizing that a spiritual seeker must always remain vigilant and safeguard oneself against four types of unfavorable association (kusangis). This wisdom resonated deeply within their hearts.

The two brothers returned home and resumed their daily responsibilities. Observing the auspicious tilak-chandlo on their foreheads and their devout Satsangi lifestyle, several detractors and non-believers became envious and resentful. Brahmins from the neighboring village of Pachhegam created immense turmoil and exerted great pressure on them to abandon Satsang. However, both brothers stood firm in their resolve, declaring, “Abandoning Satsang is out of the question!”

Sometime later, on a special occasion, the brothers hosted a feast for the Brahmins. The Brahmins arrived, and Sunderji and Kanji Sheth accommodated them on the upper floor of their residence, providing pure uncooked provisions (seedhu) so that a grand meal of laddus could be prepared.

At noon, when everyone sat in rows (pankti) to dine, the Brahmins put forth a hostile condition: “We will only partake of this meal if you renounce the Swaminarayan Satsang!”

Hearing this, both brothers fearlessly replied, “Whether you dine or not is entirely your choice, but we have embraced this Satsang at the stake of our heads (seer-saate)! In Gadhpur, Kothari Bhaktivallabh Swami taught us about the nature of kusangis, advising that one must never fear those who behave like flies, crows, or ants. You are acting just like flies, attempting to derail a person from the righteous spiritual path. But your schemes will never succeed against us! If you wish to eat, please do so; otherwise, you are free to do as you please!”

Seeing that the two brothers possessed steadfast conviction and unshakable faith in Satsang, the Brahmins realized their tactics had failed, rose from their seats, and departed. Sunderji and Kanji Sheth then joyfully served the entire sanctified feast to all the local devotees, sadhus, and traveling guests. They did not waver in the least before the adversaries and upheld their devotion to Satsang even at the cost of their lives.
