Gurucharanratanand Swami (Dhamasana) and Shriji Maharaj
In the village of Dhamasana in the Kalol taluka of Gujarat, there lived a deeply spiritual and devout elderly woman (Doshima). She heard from a fellow Haribhakt that Bhagwan Swaminarayan was currently manifest in human form on the sacred soil of Gujarat. Learning this, she led a pilgrim party of women from her village to attend the grand Yagna at Jetalpur. There, she received the holy kanthi from Motiba and embraced Satsang. Inspired by an immense enthusiasm to spread the faith, she guided many women in the village towards Satsang and spent her twilight years absorbed day and night in constant devotion and bhajan. She also inspired her only son and daughter-in-law to embrace Satsang wholeheartedly. Her daughter-in-law was blessed with four young sons, and the grandmother nurtured all four from their infancy with the nectar of Satsang.
Among the four grandsons, the eldest was an exalted spiritual seeker (mumukshu) from past lifetimes. From childhood, an innate detachment from worldly life (virakti), a love for Satsang, selfless service, and noble virtues seemed deeply etched into his soul. His physique was striking, radiant, and robust, emanating an aura of divine purity that captivated anyone who saw him.
Once, a pilgrim group (sangh) from Dhamasana journeyed to Vadtal for the divine darshan of Shri Hari. The young boy accompanied the pilgrims. Throughout the journey, he tirelessly served everyone—rushing to fetch drinking water along the road, pressing the feet of fatigued pilgrims at night, and eagerly listening during the day to the divine charitras of Shri Hari from the elders. In this spirit of loving service, they reached Vadtal and took a holy bath in the Gomti lake. Along the journey, he had brought sweets in an earthen pot for sustenance, but he had lovingly kept them aside exclusively for Shri Hari. When he went for darshan, omniscient Shri Hari, knowing his innermost prayer, lovingly asked for the sweets, ate them, and returned the remaining sanctified food as prasadi. The moment manifest Shri Hari tasted his offering, His enchanting divine form became permanently etched in the youth’s vision. Though he returned home, his heart completely detached from the material world.
Some time later, the village pilgrims set out once again for Gadhpur to participate in a festive gathering (samaiya) and behold Shri Hari. The youth went along, but this time he never returned home. He stayed back in the divine fellowship of Sadguru Gopalanand Swami and Sadguru Muktanand Swami. In the Darbargadh, he selflessly served the eminent saints and continuously chanted the Lord’s holy name with every breath.
One night, Shri Hari was resting in the Akshar Ordi. Around midnight, hearing a rustling sound outside, the Lord awoke and asked His parshad Bhaguji to see who was outside. Bhaguji went out and discovered the young devotee performing prostrations (dandavat pranam) in the quiet of the night. Shri Hari called him inside and placed His compassionate hand upon his head. The youth pleaded with folded hands, “O Prabhu! I no longer wish to live in this worldly existence. Please accept me into Your personal service and initiate me as a sadhu!” At that moment, Shri Hari gave no reply. Undeterred, the youth continued performing prostrations outside the Akshar Ordi throughout the entire night for seven consecutive nights. On the seventh night, having tested his unyielding resolve and deep devotion, Shri Hari was immensely pleased. The following morning, beneath the shade of the neem tree (limbataru) in the grand assembly, Maharaj bestowed upon him the mahasadhu initiation (diksha) and named him ‘Gurucharanratanand Swami.’
This divine event is celebrated in the holy scripture Satsangi Bhushan:
“Renounced as a saint, a lifelong celibate, his glories are vast and profound;
The jewel of Dhamasana village, Gurucharanratanand Swami, sacred and renowned!”
(Satsangi Bhushan)
Later, in an assembly, Shri Hari expressed that if Gurucharanratanand Swami were to go to Idar, he could inspire King Gambhirsinh to embrace Satsang. The moment Swami heard this wish of Maharaj, he departed directly from the assembly towards Idar without even going back to his lodging, and introduced Satsang to King Gambhirsinh. The king’s son, Juvansinhji, also became an Ekantik devotee; he married the princess of Mansa and, at royal expense, constructed the grand mandir that stands today right opposite his royal palace. Shriji Maharaj was exceedingly pleased and graciously installed the divine murtis originally brought for Shri Gopinathji Maharaj in Gadhpur into the Idar mandir, where they grant darshan to this day.
Gurucharanratanand Swami also introduced Satsang to Shivbahadursinh in the kingdom of Sirohi. Although Swami had received little formal worldly education, his divine spiritual aura was so profound that he emerged victorious in theological scriptural debates (shastrartha) against prominent scholars. When Gurucharanratanand Swami returned to Gadhpur and met Maharaj, Shri Hari was so overwhelmed with joy that He untied the turban (paagh) from His own head and placed it upon Swami’s head as a mark of highest honor. Swami also oversaw the construction of a beautiful mandir in Sirohi.
On another occasion, when Shriji Maharaj was touring the Dandhavya region with a pilgrim entourage, He visited the village of Ola. At that time, Shri Hari took Gurucharanratanand Swami with Him to his former village, Dhamasana. On the village outskirts, Shri Hari poured prasadi from His divine thaal into the Ghoghla well and blessed it, proclaiming that anyone who drank water from that sanctified well would be freed from the clutches of Yama (the fear of death) and attain salvation.
Gurucharanratanand Swami shared a deep spiritual bond with Govindanand Swami, and the two saints traveled together in Satsang vicharan as companions. Following the declaration of the Desh-Vibhag Lekh, he remained permanently in the holy group (mandal) of Sadguru Mahanubhavanand Swami, dedicating his life to devotion and service.
