The Eloquence and Discretion of Speech of Raghavanand Swami

Once, in Gadhpur, Shri Hari was seated on a cot beneath the shade of a neem tree (limbataru), presiding over a spiritual assembly. All the Nand saints and prominent Ekantik devotees were drinking the divine nectar of the captivating form of Shri Hari, who was adorned with a turban featuring three tufts (chhoga).

Shri Hari addressed the assembly, explaining that there is a vast difference in how words are spoken. One kind of speech earns honor and respect, while another invites disrespect and disgrace. Imparting this moral wisdom, Maharaj quoted: ‘Vāk-mādhurye jāyate sajjanatvam, vāk-kāṭhinye jāyate durjanatvam!’ (Through sweetness of speech, nobility and saintliness are born; through harshness of speech, wickedness is born!)

After a while, Shri Hari leaned against a large bolster on the cot and narrated an incident: “Look, once We, Sura Khachar, Raghavanand Swami, and others were traveling past the village of Sokhda. On the way, everyone became intensely thirsty. Our horses, too, were parched with thirst. We sent Dada Khachar’s attendant, Trikam Khavas, to the village well to fetch water. He went to the well and said crudely to the village women drawing water, ‘O wives of my father, will you give us some water?’ Offended and enraged by his blunt words, the women scolded and hurled abuses at him, forcing Trikam to flee.”

Shri Hari continued, “Then We asked Raghavanand Swami to go. He went and politely sent word to the women at the well: ‘O mothers, embodiments of Mother Annapurna! Our Bhagwan Swaminarayan has arrived in your village along with His devotees and saints. Everyone is very thirsty. If you could kindly lend us a pot and a rope, we will draw water from the well so everyone may drink. You are noble and compassionate mothers who alleviate the distress of others.’

Hearing these humble and respectful words, the women were delighted and said, ‘Please bring the horses here as well; two or three of us will draw water and give it to them to drink. In the meantime, take this filled pot to serve cool water to everyone.’ Therefore, Our guidance to all of you is that one must always speak words that are pleasing, respectful, and sweet.”

Shri Hari further recounted, “We then told Raghavanand Swami, ‘Water has been arranged, but now it is midday and we are hungry, so make some arrangement for food as well.’ At that moment, Sura Khachar remarked humorously, ‘Maharaj, will food descend from the sky here for us to eat?’ Raghavanand Swami stood up and said, ‘Please rest under this tree; by the divine grace of Maharaj, I will serve you all laddus right here shortly.’ Saying this, he walked about two miles to a nearby village of Garasiyas (Rajput landlords). In the village square, an assembly of Darbars was seated. Swami covered his head with a cloth, entered the local Ramji temple, and began to weep loudly.

The Darbars wondered what deep sorrow had befallen a holy sadhu. They approached him and asked, ‘Rajgar (respected priest), why are you weeping so bitterly?’ Covering his head with his sheet, Raghavanand Swami replied, ‘While traveling on a pilgrimage to Dwarka, my mother passed away on the road. Her final wish was that I must host a funeral feast (khandhiya) in her memory tomorrow morning. Being a wandering pilgrim without a home or resources, how can I fulfill this? You Darbars are noble and generous; if you could kindly assist, it would be a great act of charity.’ Moved by his sorrow, the Darbars immediately called their attendants and provided generous rations (seedha) of ghee, jaggery, wheat flour, and other essentials.

Raghavanand Swami carried the provisions back to the spot where Shriji Maharaj, Sura Khachar, and the group were resting. Smiling at Sura Khachar, he remarked, ‘Sura Bapu, behold! Here are the laddus that have descended from the sky!’ The saints then prepared fresh laddus, and everyone partook of the meal with immense joy and love.”

Thus, through the sweet eloquence and mindful speech of Raghavanand Swami, the traveling party received both cool water from the well and a joyful feast of laddus.
