એકવખત કચ્છના દિવાન સુંદરજીભાઈ પોતાના કામસર ભુજથી ગોંડલ આવ્યા હતા. ત્યાં શ્રીહરિનાં દર્શન થતાં તેમણે પ્રભુને ભુજ પધારવા આગ્રહભરી વિનંતી કરી.

ભુજમાં સુંદરજીભાઈ અને જેઠી વાલજી પહેલવાનના ગર્વનું ખંડન
એકવખત કચ્છના દિવાન સુંદરજીભાઈ પોતાના કોઈ રાજકીય કામસર ભુજથી ગોંડલ આવ્યા હતા. ત્યાં શ્રીજીમહારાજનાં દર્શન થતાં તેમણે પ્રેમપૂર્વક વિનંતી કરી: “હે પ્રભુ! આપ ભુજ પધારો તો સમસ્ત કચ્છી હરિભક્તોને આપનાં દર્શન-સેવાનો અલૌકિક લાભ મળે!” શ્રીહરિ રાજી થયા એટલે બંને ભુજ જવા નીકળ્યા.
તેઓ જોડિયા બંદરેથી વહાણમાં બેઠા. દરિયામાં વહાણ હંકારાતું હતું ત્યારે સુંદરજીભાઈના મનમાં એક સૂક્ષ્મ ગર્વનો વિચાર સ્ફુર્યો: “હું સાક્ષાત્ સ્વામિનારાયણ ભગવાનને ભુજ તેડીને જાઉં છું, એટલે ભુજ પહોંચતાં જ તમામ હરિભક્તો અને નગરજનો મારી ભારે વાહ-વાહ કરશે અને મારી કીર્તિ વધશે!” સર્વેશ્વર શ્રીહરિ તો અંતર્યામી હતા; તેમણે સુંદરજીભાઈના મનનો આ અહંકાર તત્કાળ જાણી લીધો. પોતાના એકાંતિક ભક્તના ચિત્તમાંથી ગર્વનું નિવારણ કરવા સારુ, ગર્વગંજન શ્રીહરિએ ચાલતા વહાણમાંથી અચાનક દરિયાના ઊંડા પાણીમાં છલાંગ લગાવી દીધી!
સાક્ષાત્ પ્રભુને દરિયામાં કૂદતા જોઈ સુંદરજીભાઈના હોશ ઊડી ગયા! તેઓ ભારે પશ્ચાત્તાપ સાથે પોતાનો દેહ દરિયામાં ફેંકી જીવન ટૂંકાવવા તૈયાર થયા, ત્યાં જ શ્રીહરિએ જળમાંથી દિવ્ય દર્શન આપી તેમને રોક્યા અને વહાણમાં બેસી આગળ વધવાની આજ્ઞા કરી. શ્રીહરિ તો પળવારમાં અંતર્ધ્યાન થઈ ચમત્કારિક રીતે ભુજ પહોંચી ગયા! જ્યારે સુંદરજીભાઈ ખાડી ઊતરી, જમીન માર્ગે પાંચ દિવસની રઝળપાટ પછી થાકીને લોથપોથ ભુજ પહોંચ્યા.
ભુજમાં ગંગારામ મલ્લના ઘેર સભા ભરાઈ હતી, ત્યાં પહોંચી સુંદરજીભાઈએ શ્રીહરિના ચરણોમાં સાષ્ટાંગ દંડવત્ કર્યા. ત્યારે શ્રીહરિએ ભરી સભામાં વહાણની સમગ્ર ઘટના સંભળાવતાં કહ્યું: “અમારા સાચા ભક્તમાં માન, મદ કે અભિમાનનો લેશ પણ દોષ હોય તે અમને ક્યારેય ગમતું નથી!” સુંદરજીભાઈને પોતાની ભૂલ સમજાઈ, તેમણે કરગરીને ક્ષમા માંગી અને પ્રભુને પોતાને ઘેર પધરાવ્યા.
તે જ દિવસોમાં શ્રીહરિ ભુજમાં હીરજીભાઈના ઘેર ઓસરીમાં સભા ભરીને બિરાજતા હતા. દરરોજ નગરના ભક્તો અને મુમુક્ષુઓ દર્શને આવતા. ભુજ નગરમાં જેઠી વાલજી નામે એક બળવાન પહેલવાન (મલ્લ) રહેતો હતો. તેને પોતાના વિશાળ શરીર-સૌષ્ઠવ અને બાવડાંના બળનું ભારે અભિમાન હતું. તે રોજ સભામાં સૌ દેખે તેમ છાતી ફુલાવીને અક્કડ ચાલે આવતો!
એક દિવસ ભોજન પછી જેઠી વાલજી શ્રીહરિને પગે લાગવા આવ્યો. તે સમયે શ્રીહરિએ રમૂજમાં હાથ લાંબો કરી, જેઠીનું મસ્તક પોતાની બગલમાં પકડીને દબાવી દીધું! પેલો પહેલવાન આખી સભા દેખે તેમ છૂટવા માટે તરફડિયાં મારવા લાગ્યો, પોતાની તમામ તાકાત અજમાવી લીધી, પણ શ્રીહરિની પકડમાંથી તેનું માથું તસુ સરખુંય ખસ્યું નહીં! આખરે શ્રીહરિએ હાથ ઢીલો કર્યો ત્યારે જેઠી વાલજી હાંફતો હાંફતો જમીન પર ઢળી પડ્યો! આખી સભા સામે શરમિંદો થઈને તે ઊભો થઈ ચૂપચાપ ભાગી ગયો, અને બે-ત્રણ દિવસ સુધી સભામાં ડોકાયો જ નહીં!
હીરજીભાઈએ સભામાં આ વાત છેડી ત્યારે શ્રીહરિએ સૌને ઉપદેશ આપતાં કહ્યું: “ગુરુ, દેવ, રાજા, વિદ્વાન કે ત્યાગી સંતોની સન્મુખ જતી વખતે હંમેશાં વિનય અને નમ્રતાથી ચાલવું; ક્યારેય છાતી કાઢીને, પગ ચડાવીને કે અહંકારથી બેસવું નહીં!”
બે-ત્રણ દિવસ પછી જેઠી વાલજી પોતાના જેવા જ બીજા એક બળવાન મલ્લને સાથે લઈને આવ્યો. બંને જણા શ્રીહરિની સામે છાતી ફુલાવી અવિવેકથી આવ્યા. શ્રીહરિએ તત્કાળ બંને પહેલવાનોનાં માથાં પોતાની બંને બગલમાં પકડીને સખ્ત દબાવી રાખ્યાં! બંને મલ્લોએ છૂટવા માટે પછાડા માર્યા, પણ શ્રીહરિના લોખંડી પંજા સામે તેમનું કંઈ ચાલ્યું નહીં. બંનેના મોંમાંથી ફીણ નીકળવા માંડ્યાં! બીજી બાજુ, શ્રીહરિ તો બંનેને દબાવી રાખ્યા છતાં સભા સાથે સહજભાવે હસતાં હસતાં વાતો કરતા રહ્યા!
થોડીવારે શ્રીહરિએ બંનેને છોડ્યા ત્યારે બંને પહેલવાનો ચક્કર ખાઈને જમીન પર ઢળી પડ્યા અને અર્ધબેભાન થઈ ગયા. ભાન આવતાં જ બંને લથડતા પગે ત્યાંથી નાસી ગયા. સમગ્ર સભા શ્રીહરિનું આવું અગાધ શારીરિક અને આધ્યાત્મિક બળ જોઈ આશ્ચર્યચકિત થઈ ગઈ! પ્રભુએ સુંદરજીભાઈ અને જેઠી વાલજી બંનેના અહંકારનું મર્દન કરી સૌને નમ્રતાનો અમર સંદેશ આપ્યો.

भुज में सुंदरजीभाई और जेठी वालजी पहलवान के गर्व का मर्दन
एक समय कच्छ के दीवान सुंदरजीभाई किसी राजकीय कार्यवश भुज से गोंडल आए थे। वहाँ श्रीजी महाराज के दर्शन पाकर उन्होंने प्रार्थना की: “हे प्रभु! आप भुज पधारें, ताकि समस्त कच्छ के भक्तों को आपके सान्निध्य का सुख मिल सके!” श्रीहरि ने स्वीकृति दी और दोनों भुज के लिए प्रस्थान कर गए।
वे जोडिया बंदरगाह से जहाज में सवार हुए। समुद्र में यात्रा के दौरान सुंदरजीभाई के मन में एक सूक्ष्म अहंकार उत्पन्न हुआ: “मैं साक्षात् भगवान स्वामीनारायण को भुज लेकर जा रहा हूँ; नगर पहुँचते ही सभी भक्त और अधिकारी मेरी भूरि-भूरि प्रशंसा करेंगे और मेरा मान बढ़ेगा!” सर्वेश्वर श्रीहरि अंतर्यामी थे; उन्होंने अपने भक्त के अंतःकरण के इस सूक्ष्म गर्व को तत्काल भांप लिया। अपने एकांतिक भक्त के कल्याण हेतु, गर्वहारी श्रीहरि ने चलते जहाज से अचानक अथाह समुद्र में छलांग लगा दी!
साक्षात् परमात्मा को सागर में कूदते देखकर सुंदरजीभाई के होश उड़ गए! गहन पश्चाताप से भरकर वे भी समुद्र में कूदकर प्राण त्यागने को तत्पर हुए, तभी श्रीहरि ने जल से दिव्य रूप में प्रकट होकर उन्हें रोका और जहाज से आगे बढ़ने की आज्ञा दी। श्रीहरि तो पलक झपकते ही अंतर्धान होकर भुज पहुँच गए! जबकि सुंदरजीभाई खाड़ी पार कर, पाँच दिनों की भीषण पैदल यात्रा के उपरांत धूल-धूसरित होकर भुज पहुँचे।
भुज में गंगाराम मल्ल के घर सभा लगी थी। वहाँ पहुँचकर सुंदरजीभाई प्रभु के चरणों में गिर पड़े। तब श्रीहरि ने भरी सभा में जहाज की घटना का उल्लेख करते हुए कहा: “हमारे भक्त में अभिमान, मद या मान का लेशमात्र दोष हो, यह हमें कदापि स्वीकार नहीं है!” सुंदरजीभाई को अपनी भूल समझ में आई और उन्होंने हाथ जोड़कर क्षमा मांगी।
उन्हीं दिनों श्रीहरि भुज में हीरजीभाई के घर बरामदे में सभा लगाकर विराजते थे। भुज का जेठी वालजी नामक एक बलशाली पहलवान नित्य सभा में आता था। उसे अपनी विशाल देहयष्टि और बाहुबल का भारी घमंड था। वह प्रतिदिन सभा में सीना तानकर अक्खड़ चाल से आता था।
एक दिन भोजनोपरांत जेठी वालजी श्रीहरि को प्रणाम करने आया। उस समय श्रीहरि ने सहज विनोद करते हुए हाथ आगे बढ़ाया और जेठी का सिर अपनी कांख (बगल) में दबा लिया! वह पहलवान भरी सभा के सामने छूटने हेतु छटपटाने लगा, उसने अपनी पूरी ताकत झोंक दी, किंतु श्रीहरि की पकड़ से उसका सिर तिल भर भी नहीं हिला! अंततः जब प्रभु ने हाथ हटाया, तो जेठी हांफता हुआ भूमि पर गिर पड़ा! लज्जित होकर वह चुपचाप भाग खड़ा हुआ और दो-तीन दिनों तक सभा में नहीं आया।
हीरजीभाई ने जब इस बात का उल्लेख किया, तो श्रीहरि ने सभा को उपदेश दिया: “गुरु, देव, राजा, विद्वान अथवा संन्यासी के सम्मुख जाते समय सदा नम्रता और शालीनता से चलना चाहिए; कभी सीना तानकर अथवा अहंकार से नहीं बैठना चाहिए!”
दो-तीन दिन पश्चात जेठी वालजी अपने ही जैसे एक अन्य बलिष्ठ पहलवान को साथ लेकर पुनः सभा में आया। दोनों सीना तानकर अशिष्टता से आगे बढ़े। श्रीहरि ने तत्क्षण दोनों पहलवानों के सिर अपनी दोनों कांखों में दबा लिए! दोनों पहलवानों ने छूटने हेतु भयंकर प्रयास किए, किंतु प्रभु की अलौकिक शक्ति के आगे वे विवश हो गए और उनके मुख से झाग निकलने लगा! इधर श्रीहरि दोनों को दबाए हुए भी सभा से मुस्कुराते हुए सहज वार्तालाप करते रहे!
कुछ समय पश्चात जब प्रभु ने उन्हें छोड़ा, तो दोनों लड़खड़ाकर भूमि पर गिर पड़े और अर्धमूर्च्छित हो गए। होश आने पर वे सिर झुकाकर वहाँ से भाग खड़े हुए। प्रभु के इस असीम सामर्थ्य को देखकर समस्त सभा जय-जयकार करने लगी। श्रीहरि ने इस प्रकार सुंदरजीभाई और जेठी वालजी दोनों का अहंकार मिटाकर सच्ची विनम्रता का पाठ पढ़ाया।

Shrihari in Bhuj: Shattering the Pride of Sunderjibhai and Wrestler Jethi Valji
Once, Sunderjibhai, the chief minister (Diwan) of Kutch, traveled on official business from Bhuj to Gondal. Meeting Bhagwan Swaminarayan there, he prayerfully implored: “O Lord! Please grace Bhuj with Thy holy presence so that all the devotees of Kutch may revel in Thy divine fellowship!” Shreehari agreed, and both set out for Kutch.
Boarding a coastal vessel at Jodiya port, as the ship sailed across the sea, a subtle thought of pride crept into Sunderjibhai’s intellect: “I am bringing Bhagwan Swaminarayan Himself to Bhuj; upon our arrival, the entire township and court will sing my praises, and my fame will soar!” Being omniscient, Shreehari instantly detected this creeping ego within His cherished devotee. To purge His devotee of this spiritual flaw, the Eradicator of all pride suddenly plunged off the sailing ship into the deep ocean waters!
Seeing the Lord jump into the surging waves, Sunderjibhai was horrified! Stricken with unbearable grief, he prepared to leap into the ocean to end his own life, but Shreehari appeared miraculously above the waves, commanding him to remain aboard and proceed by ship. In an instant, Shreehari vanished and miraculously arrived in Bhuj! Poor Sunderjibhai, disembarking on the coast, endured five exhausting days of grueling overland travel before arriving in Bhuj, haggard and worn.
Entering the assembly at Gangaram Mall’s residence in Bhuj, Sunderjibhai fell prostrate at Shreehari’s feet. In the presence of the congregation, Shreehari narrated the ocean pastime and declared: “We cannot tolerate even the slightest taint of arrogance or pride in Our sincere devotees!” Realizing his grave folly, Sunderjibhai sought forgiveness with folded hands.
During that same visit, Shreehari presided over daily spiritual assemblies at Hirjibhai’s house in Bhuj. A muscular professional wrestler named Jethi Valji attended the assemblies. Swollen with pride over his colossal physique and physical strength, he habitually swaggered into the assembly with a puffed-out chest and haughty demeanor.
One afternoon, when Jethi stepped forward to bow after lunch, Shreehari playfully reached out and locked Jethi’s head firmly under His armpit! The wrestler struggled with all his might to break free before the entire crowd, straining every muscle in his burly frame, but could not budge Shreehari’s grip by a fraction of an inch! When Maharaj finally released him, the panting wrestler collapsed onto the floor in utter exhaustion! Humiliated before the assembly, he slunk away and did not show his face for days.
When Hirjibhai mentioned the incident, Shreehari instructed the gathering on etiquette: “Whenever entering the presence of a Guru, deity, king, scholar, or holy ascetic, one must always walk with modesty and reverence; never strut arrogantly with a puffed chest or insolent posture!”
A few days later, Jethi returned, bringing along another hulking wrestler of equal strength. Both strutted insolently toward Shreehari with puffed chests. In an instant, Shreehari clamped both wrestlers’ heads—one under each armpit! Both titans writhed and strained frantically to extricate themselves, but against the Lord’s supernatural strength, their power was worthless; soon, they began frothing at the mouth! Meanwhile, Shreehari continued conversing cheerfully with the assembly as if holding nothing at all!
Releasing them at last, both humbled wrestlers collapsed dazed and semi-conscious upon the floor, before staggering away in disgrace. Beholding such astonishing physical and spiritual supremacy, the assembly was awed. Thus, Shreehari eradicated the pride of both Sunderjibhai and the arrogant wrestlers, leaving an indelible lesson on humility.
