Vashram Patel of Mankuva: Shrihari Relishing Half-Cooked Khichdi and Father-Son Renunciation

In the village of Mankuva in Kutch lived Vashram Patel, an agricultural labourer originally from Siyani. Owning no ancestral land of his own, he earned an honest livelihood tending the roadside orchard belonging to Manidas Bhatt of Bhuj.

One day, while journeying toward Bhuj, Bhagwan Swaminarayan graced Vashram’s orchard. Overjoyed to find the Supreme Lord at his humble abode, Vashram drew sweet water from the well, washed the Lord’s feet, and reverently seated Maharaj upon a broad, smooth stone slab beside the irrigation reservoir.

Displaying a human-like demeanor, Shreehari exclaimed: “Bhagat! Walking in the heat has made Us exceedingly hungry; please bring whatever food is available right away!” Vashram was taken aback: “The Lord of the universe asks for food, and I have nothing worthy to offer!” As he hesitated, Maharaj urged again with affectionate urgency: “Bhagat, bring whatever you have, We cannot bear this hunger!” Folding his hands contritely, Vashram replied: “O Maharaj! I have no cooked meal ready; there is only a clay pot of moth-bean khichdi simmering on the stove, and it is only half-cooked!” Shreehari laughed cheerfully: “Bhagat! Whether raw or half-cooked, pour it right here onto this flat stone slab; We shall sit right here and eat it!”

Vashram lifted the earthen vessel from the hearth and poured the steaming, half-cooked moth khichdi directly onto the clean stone slab. The excess starchy broth drained away into the water basin. As the khichdi cooled slightly, Vashram plucked fresh green chillies from the orchard and brought a bowl of fresh buttermilk, serving them lovingly before the Lord.

Without the slightest hesitation, seated upon that bare stone, Shreehari relished the half-cooked moth khichdi with green chillies and buttermilk as if it were celestial nectar, entirely captivated by His devotee’s guileless love! After dining, Maharaj showered Vashram with profound divine blessings and proceeded toward Bhuj.

From that historic afternoon, an extraordinary spiritual transformation overtook Vashram Patel’s soul. The enchanting image of Shreehari sitting upon that simple stone slab and happily relishing half-cooked khichdi became permanently etched into his consciousness. Worldly pleasures lost all their allure. He pondered constantly: “How long shall I endure the hollow burdens of this illusory world? Lest I lose this golden opportunity of attaining eternal salvation in the divine presence of God!”

One day, he summoned his young son Lakhu and shared his innermost conviction: “Lakhu! This worldly existence is filled with intractable entanglements and unending sorrow. My heart has detached completely from this illusion. I am departing to seek refuge at the lotus feet of Bhagwan Swaminarayan to become a monk. If you desire your own eternal liberation, come along with me!”

(“Tangled knots within the home, worldly pain pierces like a thorn; O Lakha, I depart for God, come along with me!”)

Moved by his father’s profound detachment, young Lakhu’s heart also filled with divine renunciation. Father and son walked together to Gadhada and fell at Shreeji Maharaj’s lotus feet. Beholding their pure devotion and intense dispassion, Shreehari rejoiced and initiated both father and son simultaneously into the Paramhansa order!
