Uka Bhagat and Harji Bhagat of Mankuva: Selfless Service and the Divine Radish Pastime in Kariyani

The village of Mankuva is situated in Kutch, approximately 400 kilometers away from Gadhada. In those days, paved highways and public conveyances did not exist. Walking that enormous distance along perilous wilderness trails infested with bandits while carrying on their heads a heavy bundle of metallic currency weighing nearly one and a half maunds (around 30 kg), along with their personal clothes and worship articles, stands as a breathtaking testament to the peerless faith of those early devotees!

Uka Bhagat, Harji Bhagat, and their devout daughter Rambai traversed this arduous 400-kilometer trail entirely on foot to reach Gadhpur. At that time, Shreeji Maharaj was holding a spiritual assembly under the soothing shade of a rose-apple (jambu) tree beside the Gangajalio well. Prostrating before the Lord, the two brothers laid the heavy bundle of hard-earned savings at Shreehari’s sacred lotus feet. Rambai bowed reverently from afar and joined the assembly of women devotees.

When Maharaj inquired about their pilgrimage, they prayed with profound humility: “O Maharaj! Noble devotee Dada Khachar exhausts his wealth daily to sustain this vast holy fellowship of saints and pilgrims. We have brought our humble life savings to assist in this noble service. Our only plea is that Thou mayest keep all three of us permanently in Thy holy service!”

Maharaj tested their inner disposition: “Do you desire to become ascetics (sadhus) or enlightened beings (siddhas)? If you wish to become sadhus, join the troupe of Narnarayanand Swami; if you wish to become siddhas, do exactly as We instruct!” Folding their hands, Uka Bhagat and Harji Bhagat replied in their delightful Kutchi dialect: “O Lord! We desire the straightforward, dependable bargain of our Kutch heritage (direct spiritual gain with unswerving obedience)! A single silver rupee in hand is far better than dreaming of a hundred thousand rupees; therefore, whatever Thou commandest, we shall obey with our lives!”

Delighted by their guileless surrender, Shreehari instructed: “Then both of you shall tend the agricultural fields of Jivuba in Lakshmi Vadi, and your daughter Rambai shall be initiated as a Sankhyayogi devotee to serve Jivuba.” The devotees rejoiced in their assigned duties. Tending the soil with pure devotion, one day while plowing the earth, brilliant circles of transcendental light radiated from every furrow, and Shreehari’s divine form became continuously visible to them in every daily action! The sublime state of continuous God-consciousness (siddha-dasha)—unattainable even through millennia of severe austerities—was effortlessly bestowed upon them through simple obedience to the Lord’s word! Their daughter Rambai likewise attained ecstatic states of samadhi through her selfless service to Jivuba.

In the auspicious month of Kartik, Samvat 1877, Shreeji Maharaj celebrated the grand Annakut festival in Kariyani. For this occasion, Uka Bhagat and Harji Bhagat brought a massive cart loaded to the brim with giant, fresh radishes harvested from Lakshmi Vadi. At the conclusion of the four holy monsoon months, Maharaj offered the radishes to the deities in the Annakut and distributed them to the sants. In playful divine delight, Maharaj began tossing the large radishes high into the air toward the assembly! To catch those sanctified radishes (mahaprasad), even the most reserved and austere elderly saints abandoned all decorum and leapt eagerly to catch the divine gifts!

Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami immortalizes this enchanting pastime in Bhaktachintamani (Chapter 87, Verses 39–40):

And in Chapter 112, Verse 21, he remembers these exalted souls:
