Bhaktimata and the Floods of Ayodhya
Once, a catastrophic flood surged through the sacred waters of the Saryu River in Ayodhya. The raging deluge began overflowing its banks, inundating numerous riverside villages and homes. When King Darshansinh, the ruler of Ayodhya at the time, was informed of this grave crisis, he rushed immediately to the riverbanks to oversee rescue efforts and look after the citizens. Anxiety gripped the city as people warned that if the torrential inflow from upstream continued to swell, the entire holy city of Ayodhya would soon be submerged underwater.
The king promptly summoned learned Brahmins and, alongside his queen, performed ceremonial worship of Mother Saryu by offering a sacred coconut (shrifal) and a consecrated red veil (chundadi), praying for the waters to subside. However, several hours passed, yet the fierce floodwaters showed no signs of receding. As everyone desperately pondered a solution, a wise elderly citizen stepped forward and remarked, “If a truly chaste and virtuous woman (pativrata nari) offers worship to appease Mother Saryu by the power of her unblemished fidelity, the swollen waters will surely subside!”
Upon hearing this counsel, King Darshansinh issued a royal proclamation across Ayodhya, directing his officials to seek out an embodiment of pure chastity and make a humble plea on behalf of the kingdom for her to appease the river. News of this search spread from house to house. When Suvasinibhabhi learned of it, she immediately conveyed the matter to the divine mother, Bhaktimata.
Moved by maternal compassion for the welfare of all beings, Bhaktimata joyfully prepared an auspicious thal of worship offerings. Holding the divine child Ghanshyam Maharaj lovingly in her arm, she walked with everyone to the overflowing banks of the Saryu. Arriving at the river, Bhaktimata offered humble prostrations to Mother Saryu. She reverently adorned the sacred river with fragrant flowers, vermilion (kumkum), and a sacred coconut, and prayed with heartfelt purity: “O Mother Saryu! If my vow of devotion and fidelity (pativratapana) toward my husband is pure and true, may your torrential waters recede and flow peacefully, bestowing safety and happiness upon all!”
Uttering this sincere prayer, she gently placed the sanctified coconut into the surging current of the river.
The moment the offering touched the water, a magnificent miracle unfolded! The fierce torrent of the river instantly began to abate. Within moments, the swollen waters receded back to their peaceful banks, and tranquility was restored throughout Ayodhya.
The joyous news of this miraculous deliverance spread like wildfire throughout the kingdom. When King Darshansinh learned that the mother of child Ghanshyam had saved Ayodhya through the divine power of her virtuous fidelity, his heart was filled with boundless joy and veneration. The king respectfully invited the revered father, Dharmadev, to the royal palace, honored him with grand civility, and presented him with precious gifts and royal offerings in heartfelt gratitude.
