Trikamji Rajgar of Palitana and His Devout Loyalty to Satsang

During their spiritual travels (vicharan) in the Gohilwad region, a group of Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s revered sadhus arrived in the holy town of Palitana. Every day in the early morning and late afternoon, the sadhus would go to bathe in the sacred Shetrunji River at the washermen’s ghat (wharf). However, some hostile local washermen (dhobis) and washerwomen harboured malice toward the sadhus. Displeased with the sadhus’ holy presence, they would mockingly pursue them, taunting, “Hey you shaven-headed ascetics! Give us your Swaminarayan clothes, let us wash them!” By attempting to touch the sadhus’ garments, these women and men willfully caused severe distress to the ascetics, who observed strict lifelong celibacy and ascetic disciplines (vartaman). Consequently, whenever their garments were touched, the sadhus had to observe rigorous alternate-day fasts (Ekantara upvas) as an austere penance.

One day, the distressed sadhus confided in a devout and courageous devotee named Trikamji Rajgar. Trikamji reverently consoled them, “Pujya Santos, please do not worry at all. When you go for your bath this afternoon, kindly let me know. I shall put an end to this harassment once and for all.”

In the afternoon, Trikamji accompanied the sadhus to the river and hid quietly behind the dense bushes near the riverbank. As anticipated, as soon as the unruly washermen approached to provoke and harass the sadhus, Trikamji sprang out, took off his leather shoe, and began soundly thrashing the washermen. Terrified and bewildered by the sudden attack, the washermen ran to the local ruler (Gamdharani), Pratapsinh, and filed an aggrieved complaint that Trikam Bhagat had beaten them black and blue with his shoe at the river ghat.

The village ruler dispatched a guard to summon Trikamji Rajgar to the royal court. In the packed assembly, the ruler asked, “Trikamji, why did you assault all these men so violently?”

Trikamji stood tall and boldly replied, “Respected Darbar! Whenever the pure and renounced sadhus of Bhagwan Swaminarayan come to the river to bathe, these deceitful washermen summon their womenfolk to deliberately touch the sadhus’ sacred garments in order to violate their monastic vows. Because of this disrespect, our holy sadhus are compelled to endure severe penances and fasts without any fault of their own!”

Seeking to defend the washermen, the ruler remarked dismissively, “Trikamji, these washermen are foolish, mad, and erratic; they might even end up tearing the sadhus’ garments in retaliation!”

Hearing the ruler call them mad, Trikam Bhagat instantly cast off his shirt and proclaimed with lionhearted courage, “If they are mad, then know that I am completely insane for my Lord and His saints!” Saying this, he held up his shoe right in front of the entire assembly and struck the washerman standing nearby, declaring, “This is precisely how I struck them at the river! And mark my words—if anyone in this town dares to mock, insult, or trouble the sadhus again, I will thrash them in the exact same manner!”

Witnessing Trikamji’s fearless valor, profound reverence for the holy sadhus, and staunch loyalty (paksh) to the Satsang, wisdom dawned upon Darbar Pratapsinh. Turning sharply to the washermen, the ruler sternly admonished them, “If you possess the capacity to endure more beatings from Trikamji, only then dare to trouble the sadhus ever again!” The ruler then respectfully dismissed Trikam Bhagat with high regard.

Through Trikamji Rajgar’s resolute courage and decisive intervention, the harassment of the sadhus at the Shetrunji riverbank was brought to an end forever, allowing the holy saints to perform their devotional duties in peace.
