The Curd Tug-of-War in Gadhpur and Brahmanand Swami’s Kirtans
One afternoon in Gadhpur, in the veranda behind Akshar Ordi, Shri Hari personally came to serve sanctified food to the rows of holy saints. Walking joyfully along the dining rows (pankti), Shriji Maharaj affectionately called out each saint by name and served an array of delicious delicacies. He then went inside the storeroom to fetch curd, picking up an earthen pot of fresh curd. Seeing this, Motiba intervened, saying, “Wait, Maharaj! Let me give You the curd.” With this, she attempted to take the curd pot from Maharaj’s hands. Her affectionate intention was to skim the rich cream from the top of the curd and preserve it for Shriji Maharaj’s personal thal.
However, Shriji Maharaj lovingly insisted, “Ba! Today I am feeding My beloved saints, and I shall not let you take away the cream from them!” Saying so, Maharaj firmly held onto the pot. In their playful tug-of-war, the earthen vessel broke! Shriji Maharaj immediately picked up a second pot of curd, but in the ensuing tussle, that pot cracked and broke as well! Consequently, both Shriji Maharaj and Motiba had their clothes and bodies thoroughly splashed with curd.
Noticing the delay in Shriji Maharaj’s return to the dining row, Sadguru Brahmanand Swami, who was seated right opposite near the doorway of the room, witnessed this entire playful leela with his own eyes. Smiling broadly, he announced to the saints, “In the dispute between these two, our curd has been spilled! Therefore, let everyone rinse their mouths and hands, and let us retire to our quarters.” All the saints performed achaman and returned to their residence. Meanwhile, Motiba and Maharaj bathed one after the other at the Gangajaliyo Well, changed into fresh garments, and Shri Hari retired to Akshar Ordi for His afternoon rest.
That very afternoon at the saints’ quarters, poet-laureate Sadguru Brahmanand Swami sat at his seat and composed 24 new devotional verses depicting this divine leela, known as the Dan-lila pads. In the signature verse of the composition, he wittily included the phrase: “E ladāīnī vāt Brahmānand jāṇe” (“The secret of this quarrel is known only to Brahmanand”). Later that afternoon, during the third quarter of the day, an assembly convened in the Darbargadh. In that gathering, Brahmanand Swami sang these newly composed Dan-lila kirtans in his resonant, melodious voice, leading everyone to sing along with immense devotion and joy.
Shriji Maharaj playfully feigned ignorance and asked Brahmanand Swami, “When did We ever do such a thing?” Swami wittily quipped, “O Maharaj! I have only sung what I witnessed with my own eyes!”
Laughing, Maharaj sent word to Motiba inside: “Make sure to give Swami a full thal of food today—as a reward for playfully exposing both of us in front of the entire assembly!” Hearing this, Sadguru Brahmanand Swami turned to Sadguru Muktanand Swami and jokingly said with a laugh, “By exposing our divine Parents’ playful squabble, today we are blessed to receive a sumptuous thal of divine prasadi!” With such affectionate humor, Brahmanand Swami filled the entire assembly with joy and laughter.
When the sacred thal was offered to Shri Hari that day, Maharaj sent a sanctified plate of prasadi to Brahmanand Swami, showering boundless divine love upon His intimate companion and friend.
