Shrihari in Dhoraji: Bestowing Satsang upon Gondal Darbar Hathibhai in a Humble Potter’s Courtyard

Once, Shreeji Maharaj was residing at the modest home of a Rajput devotee in the town of Dhoraji. On that very day, Darbar Hathibhai, the chieftain of Gondal, arrived in Dhoraji along with his chief administrator (karbhari) on official administrative business. While in the court market, someone informed them: “Bhagwan Sahjanand Swami is presently gracing our village!”

Eager to behold the Lord, Darbar Hathibhai hurriedly finished his official duties. However, his status-conscious administrator strongly objected: “We are the rulers of Gondal; visiting the humble home of an ordinary Rajput beneath our royal rank is entirely unbecoming!” He devised numerous excuses to dissuade the ruler from visiting.

A devotee brought word to Shreeji Maharaj that Darbar Hathibhai of Gondal was eager for His holy darshan. Maharaj affectionately asked the host Rajput devotee: “Brother! If the ruler of Gondal visits your home, will worldly customs compel you to incur heavy ceremonial expenses?” The poor Rajput replied honestly: “O Maharaj! According to royal etiquette, entertaining such a distinguished guest requires lavish hospitality, including opium-water (kasumba), costly sweets, and ornate arrangements, which would cost a considerable sum.” Shreehari immediately declared: “We shall never allow a devoted seeker of modest means to bear an unnecessary financial burden on Our account! We shall not remain here.” Arising without delay, Shreehari walked with His assembly of sants to the far edge of town to the humble abode of an impoverished potter (kumbhar) devotee!

Overwhelmed with gratitude to find the Supreme Lord at his doorstep, the poor potter lovingly welcomed Maharaj into his dusty courtyard. Meanwhile, Darbar Hathibhai rode on horseback to the Rajput’s house, only to learn: “Shreehari has relocated to the potter’s courtyard at the edge of the village!” The administrator protested vehemently once more: “Bapu! A sovereign ruler must never step foot into the home of a low-caste potter; our royal prestige will be ruined!” But Hathibhai was consumed by an unquenchable thirst for the divine. He firmly rebuffed his minister: “Let worldly society say what it will, but today I shall have the divine darshan of Bhagwan Swaminarayan at any cost!”

Hathibhai galloped straight to the potter’s courtyard. Dismounting his horse, he bowed low in deep reverence before Shreehari. At that moment, Shreehari was sitting humbly on coarse jute sacks (gunny sacks) spread over the earthen floor, completely captivated by the potter’s pure love! Welcoming Hathibhai with warmth, Maharaj had another gunny sack spread beside Him and invited the ruler to sit. Maharaj then instructed His attendant, “Bring cool water for the Darbar.”

The potter devotee brought sweet, cool well-water in two newly molded small earthen pots (shambhu). Shreehari drank delightfully from one clay vessel and handed the second to Hathibhai, saying: “Darbar, drink this refreshing water straight from the vessel!” Setting aside all pride of royal birth and caste taboos, Hathibhai drank deeply from the raw earthenware. Maharaj enquired about his welfare and engaged him in uplifting spiritual dialogue.

Shreehari then proposed: “Darbar! Since you have taken such pains to seek Our darshan, embrace Satsang and accept the sacred vows (vartman)!” Hathibhai answered with disarming sincerity: “O Maharaj! We are worldly souls entangled in the cycles of ignorance for countless births. Abandoning every worldly attachment instantly is difficult for me, but from this very moment, I solemnly vow never to commit theft and never to usurp another’s property (averi)! The remaining vows I shall gradually embrace through Thy divine grace.”

Beholding his guileless humility, absolute honesty, and utter lack of arrogance, Shreehari was overjoyed! Clapping His hands, Maharaj proclaimed to the assembly: “We shall grant spiritual liberation to Hathibhai equal to that of Sadguru Muktanand Swami!” Hathibhai devoutly received the sacred vows, and Shreehari placed both His lotus hands upon his head, bestowing supreme blessings.
