જેતલપુરના ગંગામાંનું દિવ્ય કુળ અને રાધાકૃષ્ણ દેવનું આપેલું વચન
પ્રભુ દ્વારકાધીશને વૈકુંઠથી બાવન વખત પૃથ્વી પર તેડી લાવનારા જૂનાગઢના પરમ ભક્તકવિ નરસિંહ મહેતાના સુપુત્રી કુંવરબાઈને ઉના ગામે પરણાવેલાં. કુંવરબાઈનાં દીકરી શર્મિષ્ઠાબાઈ ઉત્તર ગુજરાતના વડનગર ગામે પરણ્યાં હતાં. શર્મિષ્ઠાબાઈને સંતાનમાં ત્રણ દીકરા અને બે દીકરીઓ હતી—જે બે દીકરીઓ ભારતીય શાસ્ત્રીય સંગીતમાં અજોડ અને સુપ્રસિદ્ધ ‘તાના અને રીરી’ તરીકે ઓળખાઈ. શર્મિષ્ઠાબાઈના પુત્ર ભીમ મહેતાને નવ દીકરા હતા. એ નવ બંધુઓમાંના ભૂદર મહેતાનાં સંતાન એટલે આપણા સત્સંગમાં ખુદ ભગવાન શ્રીહરિ સહિત ત્યાગી-ગૃહી, અબાલવૃદ્ધ સૌ સત્સંગીઓ જેમને વહાલથી ‘માં’ કહીને બોલાવે છે એ જેતલપુરનાં ગંગામાં! ગંગામાં ભક્ત નરસૈયાની સાતમી પેઢીએ પ્રગટ્યાં હતાં.
ગંગામાં પાંચ ભાઈ-બહેન હતાં: ૧. મોટાં બહેન કુશળકુંવરબા—જેમના ઘેર શ્રીહરિએ સૌ હરિભક્તોને ખીચડીનાં દાતણ કરાવેલાં. ૨. બીજાં બહેન રળિયાતકુંવર—જેમના ઘરે ઉનાવા ગામે શ્રીહરિ સાત-સાત વખત થાળ જમ્યા છે. ૩. ત્રીજાં પોતે ગંગામાં. ૪. ભાઈ નાનાભાઈ—જેઓ કરજીસણ વસ્યા. ૫. બીજા ભાઈ જોઈતારામ—જેઓ નાર્દીપુરમાં રહ્યા.
ગંગામાંને બાળપણથી જ પોતાના દાદાજી ભીમ મહેતાને સ્વપ્નમાં પ્રાપ્ત થયેલી રાધાકૃષ્ણ અને બળદેવજીની પવિત્ર મૂર્તિઓની પ્રત્યક્ષ પ્રગટભાવે સેવા-અર્ચના કરવાની અખંડ લગન હતી. લગ્ન પછી સાસરે જઈને પણ તેમણે આ મૂર્તિઓની નિત્ય સેવા-પૂજા અવિરત ચાલુ રાખી. ગંગામાંનાં લગ્ન નાર્દીપુરના ઔદીચ્ય બ્રાહ્મણ પરિવારમાં વિશ્વનાથ સાથે થયાં હતાં. વિશ્વનાથ રાવળ જ્ઞાતિના ગોર (કુળગોર) હોવાથી તેઓ જેતલપુર આવીને સ્થાયી થયા હતા.
પરંતુ પ્રારબ્ધના લેખ અનુસાર, એક દિવસ જેતલપુરના મંદિરમાં ભારે ભીડ અને ભાગદોડ થતાં વિશ્વનાથ નાની વયે અકસ્માતમાં મૃત્યુ પામ્યા. યુવાન વયે વૈધવ્ય આવતાં તે કાળના રિવાજ મુજબ ગંગામાં પતિ પાછળ સતી થવા તૈયાર થયાં. તે સમયે તેમણે જે મૂર્તિઓની આજીવન ભાવપૂર્વક સેવા કરી હતી તે રાધાકૃષ્ણ દેવે સાક્ષાત્ પ્રગટ થઈને ગંગામાંને દર્શન આપ્યાં અને રોકતાં કહ્યું: “ગંગાબાઈ! તમે સતી થઈને આત્મહત્યાનું પાપ ન કરશો; હું પોતે તમારો દીકરો થઈને તમને માતૃસુખ આપીશ!”
તે વખતે ગંગામાંએ આશ્ચર્યથી પૂછ્યું, “હે પ્રભુ! મારા પતિ તો અવસાન પામ્યા છે અને હવે હું વિધવા છું; આપ મારા દીકરા કઈ રીતે થશો?” ત્યારે ઠાકોરજીએ હસીને કહ્યું: “તમારો દીકરો થવા માટે મારે તમારી કૂખે જન્મ લેવાની જરૂર નથી; પરંતુ હું સાક્ષાત્ અવતાર ધારણ કરીને તમારા ઘેર આવીશ અને તમે જીવશો ત્યાં સુધી તમને ‘માં… માં…’ કહીને જ બોલાવીશ!”
આ દિવ્ય વચનથી ગંગામાંનું હૃદય ભક્તિ અને આશ્વાસનથી ભરાઈ ગયું. તેમણે સતી થવાનો વિચાર માંડી વાળ્યો અને પોતાના આરાધ્યદેવ રાધાકૃષ્ણની સેવામાં પોતાનું શેષ જીવન સમર્પિત કરી જેતલપુરમાં એકાંત ભક્તિભાવે રહેવા લાગ્યાં.

भगवान द्वारकाधीश को वैकुंठ से बावन बार पृथ्वी पर बुलाने वाले जूनागढ़ के परम भक्तकवि नरसिंह मेहता की सुपुत्री कुंवरबाई का विवाह ऊना गाँव में हुआ था। कुंवरबाई की पुत्री शर्मिष्ठाबाई का विवाह उत्तर गुजरात के ऐतिहासिक वडनगर में हुआ था। शर्मिष्ठाबाई के तीन पुत्र और दो पुत्रियाँ थीं—वे दोनों पुत्रियाँ भारतीय शास्त्रीय संगीत की अमर गायिका ‘ताना और रीरी’ के नाम से विश्वविख्यात हुईं। शर्मिष्ठाबाई के पुत्र भीम मेहता के नौ पुत्र थे। उन नौ भाइयों में से भूदर मेहता की संतान थीं—जेतलपुर की परम पूज्य गंगामाँ, जिन्हें स्वयं भगवान श्रीहरि सहित त्यागी-गृहस्थ, आबालवृद्ध सभी सत्संगी प्रेम से ‘माँ’ कहकर पुकारते हैं! गंगामाँ भक्त नरसिंह मेहता की सातवीं पीढ़ी में प्रकट हुई थीं।
गंगामाँ कुल पाँच भाई-बहन थीं:
- बड़ी बहन कुशलकुंवरबा—जिनके घर श्रीहरि ने सभी भक्तों को खिचड़ी के दातुन कराए थे।
- दूसरी बहन रळियातकुंवर—जिनके घर उनावा गाँव में श्रीहरि ने सात-सात बार थाल आरोग्या था।
- तीसरी स्वयं गंगामाँ।
- भाई नानाभाई—जो करजीसण में बसे।
- दूसरे भाई जोईताराम—जो नार्दीपुर में रहे।
गंगामाँ को बचपन से ही अपने दादाजी भीम मेहता को स्वप्न में प्राप्त हुई राधाकृष्ण और बलदेव जी की दिव्य मूर्तियों की सेवा-पूजा करने की अटूट लगन थी। विवाह के उपरांत ससुराल जाकर भी उन्होंने इन मूर्तियों की सेवा अखंड रूप से जारी रखी। गंगामाँ का विवाह नार्दीपुर के औदीच्य ब्राह्मण परिवार में विश्वनाथ के साथ हुआ था। विश्वनाथ रावल जाति के कुलगुरु होने के कारण जेतलपुर आकर बस गए थे।
किंतु विधि के विधान से, एक दिन जेतलपुर के एक मंदिर में भारी भीड़ और भगदड़ मच जाने से अल्पायु में ही विश्वनाथ की आकस्मिक मृत्यु हो गई। उस काल की प्रथा के अनुसार युवावस्था में ही गंगामाँ सती होने के लिए उद्यत हुईं। उसी समय उनके आराध्य राधाकृष्ण देव ने साक्षात् प्रकट होकर गंगामाँ को दर्शन दिए और रोकते हुए कहा: “गंगाबाई! आप सती होकर आत्महत्या का पाप न करें; मैं स्वयं आपका पुत्र बनकर आपको मातृसुख प्रदान करूँगा!”
तब गंगामाँ ने विस्मित होकर पूछा, “हे प्रभु! मेरे पति का तो देहांत हो चुका है और अब मैं विधवा हूँ; आप मेरे पुत्र कैसे बनेंगे?” तब ठाकुरजी ने मंद मुस्कान के साथ कहा: “आपका पुत्र बनने के लिए मुझे आपकी कोख से जन्म लेने की आवश्यकता नहीं है; मैं साक्षात् नर-तनु धारण कर आपके द्वार आऊँगा और जब तक आप जीवित रहेंगी, आपको ‘माँ… माँ…’ कहकर ही पुकारूँगा!”
प्रभु के इस अलौकिक वरदान से गंगामाँ का हृदय शांत हो गया। उन्होंने सती होने का विचार त्याग दिया और अपने आराध्य देव की भक्ति-सेवा में लीन रहकर जेतलपुर में निष्काम तपस्वी जीवन व्यतीत करने लगीं।

Ganga Ma of Jetalpur: Sacred Ancestry from Narsinh Mehta and the Divine Promise of Radha-Krishna
Ganga Ma of Jetalpur—whom Bhagwan Swaminarayan Himself, along with monks, householders, young and old across the entire Satsang fellowship, affectionately addressed as ‘Mother’—was born in the illustrious seventh generation of the celebrated saint-poet Narsinh Mehta of Junagadh (who had summoned Lord Dwarkadhish from Vaikunth fifty-two times). Narsinh Mehta’s daughter Kunvarbai was married in Una; Kunvarbai’s daughter Sharmishtabai was wed in Vadnagar, North Gujarat. Sharmishtabai bore three sons and two daughters—the legendary sisters ‘Tana and Riri’, world-renowned in Indian classical music. Sharmishtabai’s son Bhim Mehta had nine sons, one of whom was Bhudar Mehta, the father of Ganga Ma.
Ganga Ma was one of five siblings:
- Elder sister Kushalkunwarba—at whose home Shreehari famously performed the unique miracle of the khichdi twig-brushes (datan).
- Second sister Raliyatkunwar—at whose home in Unawa Shreehari partook of meals seven times.
- Ganga Ma herself.
- Brother Nanabhai—who settled in Karjisan.
- Brother Joitaram—who lived in Nardipur.
From her early childhood, Ganga Ma harboured intense, single-minded devotion toward the sacred murtis of Radha-Krishna and Baldevji that her grandfather Bhim Mehta had miraculously received in a divine vision. Even after her marriage, she carried these beloved deities to her in-laws’ home and lovingly maintained their daily worship. Ganga Ma was married to Vishwanath, an Audichya Brahmin from Nardipur. Because Vishwanath served as the hereditary priest (Gor) for the Raval community, the couple settled in Jetalpur.
However, by the inscrutable decree of destiny, during a sudden stampede at a crowded local temple festival, Vishwanath tragically lost his life at a young age. Devastated and widowed in her youth, Ganga Ma prepared to commit sati according to the prevailing customs of the era. At that critical juncture, the sacred murtis of Radha-Krishna she had faithfully adored manifested living before her! Lord Krishna dissuaded her, proclaiming: “O Ganga Bai! Do not commit the grievous sin of self-destruction by entering the funeral pyre; I Myself shall become your son and bless you with pure maternal happiness!”
Perplexed, Ganga Ma asked, “O Lord! My husband has passed away and I am a helpless widow; how can You ever become my son?” The Lord smiled radiantly and promised: “To become your son, I do not need to take birth from your physical womb; I shall manifest in human form, come to your doorstep, and address you as ‘Mother’ for as long as you live!”
Comforted by this infallible divine promise, Ganga Ma abandoned the thought of immolation. She consecrated her remaining years entirely to the loving worship of Radha-Krishna, living an austere, devotional life in Jetalpur.
