Velabhai and Kalabhai Sathvara of Bagasara

In the village of Bagasara, the Sathvara family had embraced the Satsang fellowship through the divine association of exalted saints. Velabhai Sathvara, a devoted member of this family, set out early one morning to bathe at his farm located near his home. As dawn had just broken and darkness still lingered, he stepped into the irrigation water channel (dhoriyo) and accidentally stepped upon a venomous snake, which immediately bit his foot.

At that critical moment, Velabhai remembered the uplifting words of his Guru, Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami: “By chanting the Swaminarayan Mahamantra, even the deadliest venom of a black cobra subsides and all worldly desires are eradicated; therefore, while walking, resting, rising, and sitting, one should constantly chant Swaminarayan… Swaminarayan…” Remembering this, Velabhagat sat right there on his farm and began chanting the Mahamantra with deep devotion. By the divine efficacy of the holy name, the snake’s venom did not spread through his body at all. As the late afternoon approached, he peacefully walked back home.

Seeing him arrive so late in the evening, his family members inquired about the delay. Velabhagat showed them the mark of the snake bite on his foot, narrated the incident in detail, and explained the supreme glory of the Swaminarayan Mahamantra to all.

Kalabhai Sathvara of Bagasara was likewise a devotee endowed with unwavering conviction and steadfast faith. Once, at the end of the monsoon season, he harnessed his bullock cart and joined other farmers from his village to travel to Sarsai village in the Gir region to cut and gather grass for their cattle. At daybreak, they reached near Sarsai village and unyoked their bullock carts in the dry bed of the Shetrunji River to partake of their morning breakfast. Kalabhagat bathed in the river and sat on the sands to perform his daily morning puja. Upon concluding his puja, when he opened his small box (dabli) to offer Naivedya (sacred food offering) to Thakorji, he discovered that the prasadi sugar crystals (sakar) had run out. Disappointed, he respectfully placed Thakorji back in his puja case and packed up his belongings.

When the other farmers sat down to eat, Kalabhagat refrained from joining them. When questioned, he humbly stated, “Without offering naivedya to my beloved Thakorji, I cannot partake of any food!” The others urged him persistently, but he remained firm. His companions reasoned, “Kalabhagat, it will take us three days to return home. You cannot stay hungry and thirsty for so long; please eat something!” Yet, the resolute devotee would not waver. His heart was consumed by only one devotional yearning: “Alas, I was unable to offer naivedya to my Thakorji today!”

With this prayerful thought in his heart, he drove his cart at the rear of the caravan along the dirt path. Suddenly, his eyes fell upon a trail of pure sugar crystals lying along the edge of the path! Astonished, he tasted a grain to verify it. He wondered how sugar could possibly appear in such a barren wilderness, guessing that perhaps a pack-bullock trader’s sack had torn. However, as he looked further, he saw an abundant ridge of pristine sugar crystals laid out ahead!

Kalabhagat instantly realized that the merciful Shri Hari had manifested this miracle to protect His devotee’s vow and accept the offering for Thakorji. Overwhelmed with divine joy, he filled his puja box with sugar crystals and tied another bundle into a cloth for the others. He called out to the carts ahead, gathered all the farmers, reverently offered the sugar as naivedya to Thakorji, and distributed the sanctified sweet prasadi to everyone.

Delighted by the unexpected treat, everyone asked, “Kalabhagat, you had no sugar earlier; where did you find so much in this wilderness?” Kalabhagat narrated the entire miraculous incident. Intrigued, they all walked back to verify the spot, but to their utter astonishment, there was not a single crystal of sugar left—only pebbles and stones remained! All were deeply awestruck by this divine miracle (parcho) of Shri Hari.

Upon returning to Bagasara, Kalabhagat shared the divine incident with the devotees at the mandir, inspiring everyone to take a firm vow (niyam) to always offer naivedya to Thakorji before having their daily meals.
