Karsan Luhar of Tarkatalav: Unwavering Adherence to Shikshapatri and the Consequence of Offending a Devotee
In the arid Kharapat region, in the village of Tarkatalav, lived a deeply devout disciple named Karsan Luhar (blacksmith). Previously, he had resided in the neighbouring village of Pithvajal, earning an honest, righteous livelihood through his craft.
One day, as Karsanbhagat walked through the marketplace of Pithvajal, a court sycophant provoked the local chieftain (Darbar), instigating him: “Bapu! Look at your blacksmith, Karsan! He has turned into a grand Swaminarayan devotee. No matter how sternly you command him, he will refuse to utter the vulgar Holi slurs (faag)!” Swayed by his courtier’s instigation, the Darbar lost his temper and discernment. Calling Karsan forward, he demanded, “Karsan! Stand in the middle of the market and recite the foul Holi verses for our amusement!”
Karsanbhagat replied with gentle humility yet unwavering firmness: “Darbar! You are our respected ruler and provider. Yet you demand that I speak words that do not exist within my heart or soul! My soul resonates only with the sacred devotional hymns of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. If you command, I shall gladly sing those divine praises for you.” The courtier instantly interjected: “See, Bapu! He blatantly disobeys your royal authority!” Enraged, the Darbar shouted, “I don’t want your hymns! It is the festive season of Holi; you must speak the profane faag right here in the marketplace!” The humble blacksmith stood tall and declared: “In the holy Shikshapatri of my beloved Lord Swaminarayan, using obscene, vulgar, and indecent language is strictly prohibited. Even if it costs me my life, I will never violate the divine command of my Lord!”
The Darbar then tried bribery, offering one to five large measures (kalashi) of grain, but Karsan remained as immovable as Mount Meru. Infuriated by his steadfastness, the ruler issued an ultimatum: “If you will not speak the faag, leave my village immediately!” Without a moment’s hesitation, Karsan Luhar sacrificed his ancestral home, workshop, and lands for the sanctity of his faith and the commands of the Shikshapatri, relocating his family to Tarkatalav.
In Tarkatalav, he set up a small modest workshop and resumed his smithing, spending his earnings in serving holy sadhus and nurturing satsang. With immense devotion, Karsanbhagat erected a small, beautiful Swaminarayan temple. The back wall of the sanctum adjoined the courtyard of an antagonistic neighbour from the merchant caste, who harboured deep malice towards the Satsang fellowship. One day, the neighbour summoned Karsan and threatened: “The eaves and cornices (motiya) of your temple roof extend two cubits over my courtyard; cut them off immediately!” Karsanbhagat resolutely answered, “I would sooner surrender my own head than cut down the ornamentation of the house of God!”
Blinded by enmity, the hostile neighbour seized an axe and violently chopped off the protruding roof-eaves of the temple himself! That evening, when Karsanbhagat arrived to perform the evening aarti and witnessed the desecration, he wept in profound sorrow. The next day, he walked to the village of Amba and poured his grief before the venerable devotee Devshi Bapa Luhar. Devshi Bapa consoled him with calm spiritual wisdom: “Karsan, do not be disheartened. He did not vandalize your private home; he desecrated the temple of the Almighty! Since God’s own sanctum has been harmed, God Himself will settle this account. We need not harbor grief or anger.” Comforted, Karsan returned to his routine duties.
Shortly thereafter, a sinister madness seized the spiteful neighbour’s intellect. On the holy day of Vinayak Ganesh Chaturthi in the month of Vaishakh, an evil impulse overtook his mind to ’test’ Lord Ganesha. After bathing, he placed food offerings before an idol of Ganesha and bolted the door from the inside. He thought arrogantly, “If Ganesha is truly a living god, let him stay my hand!” With a sharp sword, he mercilessly severed the heads of his three young sons, murdered his wife, and slaughtered his two daughters. In their blood, he scribbled on a piece of paper: “I have slain all of them to test the power of Ganesha!” He then slit his own throat, ending his wretched life.
When the horrified villagers discovered the carnage, they lamented in solemn realization: “He maliciously harassed the saintly devotee Karsan and desecrated the temple of God; this gruesome ruin is the retribution for offending God’s devotee (Bhagwadi Apradh). The Almighty stripped him of his sanity!” This tragic event stood as an indelible warning across the land of the grave peril of harbouring malice toward sincere devotees of God.
