Jeram Brahmachari and the Salvation of the Soul within the Palasha (Khakhra) Tree

In the holy Ramcharitmanas, Saint Tulsidas writes:

(“There is no sorrow in this world like poverty, and no joy like meeting a genuine saint. Compassion in word, thought, and deed is the natural temperament of saints.”)

Once, during the scorching summer month of Vaishakh, Shreehari’s devoted attendant Jeram Brahmachari was traveling on foot alone from Gadhada to Vadtal for the sacred darshan of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Along the secluded trail stood an ancient, sprawling Khakhra (Palasha / flame-of-the-forest) tree. Though the air was perfectly still without even a gentle breeze, the massive tree began to tremble and sway noticeably as soon as Jeram Brahmachari drew near.

Observing this strange occurrence, Brahmachariji pondered: “Why does this tree tremble so intensely when there is no wind? Surely, the soul residing in this arboreal body must be an earnest spiritual seeker from a previous life longing for liberation.” By nature, true saints are boundless reservoirs of divine benevolence. Filled with profound compassion, Jeram Brahmachari approached the trunk. Taking sanctified water from his water-pot (kamandalu), he sprinkled it upon the tree, administering the five sacred vows (Panch-Vartman) of the Swaminarayan faith! He then prayed deeply to Bhagwan Swaminarayan: “O Lord! Grant ultimate salvation to this seeking soul residing within this tree.” Offering an anjali of holy water at the roots, he chanted the divine Mahamantra: “Swaminarayan… Swaminarayan…”

Instantly, the entire Khakhra tree vibrated with immense spiritual ecstasy, and hundreds of brilliant scarlet Kesuda (palasha) blossoms showered down from its branches, forming a fragrant carpet at the saint’s feet, as if offering a devout floral tribute! Overwhelmed with reverence, Jeram Brahmachari carefully collected the fresh, vibrant blossoms into his shoulder pouch (jholi) and resumed his journey to Vadtal.

Upon reaching Vadtal, Brahmachariji bathed in the holy waters of Gomti Lake and proceeded to have the divine darshan of Shreeji Maharaj, falling prostrate in humble reverence. Embracing him with boundless affection, Maharaj inquired about his well-being. Jeram Brahmachari then placed the freshly gathered Kesuda blossoms in a large copper platter at Shreehari’s lotus feet and narrated how the trembling tree had sought refuge and received the sacred vows.

Holding the vibrant flowers in His hands, Shreeji Maharaj smiled radiant approval and revealed to the gathered assembly: “O sants and devotees! In a past life, the soul inhabiting this Khakhra tree was a devoted ascetic performing rigorous penance. However, having inadvertently committed an offense against an enlightened sage, he was cursed to endure existence in the body of a tree. For countless years, he stood silently by that desert trail, expiating his past burden through the sacred sight of passing saints and pilgrims. Today, upon beholding a pure and sinless saint like Jeram Brahmachari, he shivered in prayerful entreaty for deliverance. Because Brahmachariji has initiated him with the sacred vows, this liberated soul will now be reborn into an exemplary devotee family, attain spiritual perfection, and enter the eternal abode of Akshardham!”

Maharaj then handed the tray of sacred blossoms to Mulji Brahmachari, instructing him to brew a natural saffron-red color. On the following day, during the jubilant festival of Holi (Rangotsav), Shreeji Maharaj sprayed that very dye upon all the assembled saints and devotees in an unforgettable celebration of divine love!
