The Poor Brahmin of Loya and Devotion to Shriji Maharaj
Bound by the affectionate love of Sura Bapu and Shantaba, Shri Hari was residing in the village of Loya-Nagadka. Every day, Shri Hari performed the divine Shakotsav lila (festival of vegetables) — seasoning the vegetable curry with His own sacred hands and lovingly serving it to the rows of seated saints and devotees Himself. Each day, seated upon an elevated stage, He presided over the spiritual assembly. Spiritual seekers from far and wide felt immensely blessed to behold this divine Shakotsav and receive the darshan that is rare even for great deities like Brahma and Shiva.
One day, as Shri Hari was seated upon the high stage gracing the assembly with His divine darshan, an impoverished, frail Brahmin clad in worn-out, tattered garments arrived on foot from the Jhalawad region. With trembling limbs, he approached Shri Hari and bowed reverently at His holy feet. Removing the weathered turban from his head, he untied its tight fold, took out a single silver rupee, and placed it lovingly at Shri Hari’s lotus feet. Shriji Maharaj personally received the rupee in His own hands and gently asked the Brahmin, “Where did you obtain this entire rupee?” With tears of joy welling in his eyes, the Brahmin replied, “O Maharaj! I worked as a courier (kashid), traveling on foot to deliver an urgent letter to Zanzavad, and this is the hard-earned wage I received for that labor.”
Maharaj smiled and affectionately said, “Then why did you not purchase a new turban for yourself? The turban on your head is so old and torn!” The Brahmin replied with deep devotion, “O Maharaj! If I had bought a turban for myself, what would I have offered at Your holy lotus feet? My days can easily pass even with this old, torn turban. But having met You, to be able to place something at Your divine feet is the supreme attainment and reward of my entire human existence! Now, whether this mortal body remains or perishes, my heartfelt yearning to offer something unto Your lotus feet has been fulfilled.”
Shri Hari was immensely pleased with the Brahmin’s pure, selfless devotion and placed both of His divine hands upon his head in blessing.
Turning towards Sadguru Muktanand Swami, Shri Hari asked, “O Swami, is there anything left for this soul to accomplish in this human birth?” Sadguru Muktanand Swami reverently replied, “O Maharaj! Through this supreme offering of pure love, he has accomplished all the spiritual goals of his life!”
