The Farmer of Kharapat and Shriji Maharaj’s Help
While presiding in Gadhpur, Shri Hari announced in the assembly that He would travel to Vadtal to celebrate an upcoming festival (samaiyo). Hearing this, Dada Khachar humbly prayed, “O Maharaj! It would be wonderful if You celebrate the festival right here, so that all of us here may receive the divine benefit of Your presence!” Graciously acceding to Dada Khachar’s loving request, Shri Hari agreed to hold the celebration in Gadhpur.
A wave of jubilation swept through the entire Darbargadh. Young and old eagerly immersed themselves in making preparations for the grand festival. Pilgrim congregations (sanghs) from distant villages began journeying toward Gadhada. A sangh traveling from Gujarat was proceeding toward Gadhada, singing devotional kirtans along the way. While passing through a village in the arid, saline plains of Bhal (Kharapat), they halted at the farm of a Patel farmer to take their midday meal. While they were dining, the farmer approached them and asked, “Where are you all traveling to?” The devotees replied, “A grand samaiyo is taking place in Gadhada, and we are going to have the divine darshan of Bhagwan Swaminarayan.” The farmer asked, “Is Swaminarayan truly Bhagwan (God)?” The devotees replied, “Yes indeed! He is the supreme Lord of infinite universes and our revered Ishtadev. You too should take His darshan and sanctify your human birth.” The farmer replied, “I am deeply occupied with farm work, so how can I come? However, please offer these ten rupees of mine at His holy feet on my behalf! If He is truly Bhagwan, He will certainly bless my soul with liberation!” Rejoicing at his gesture, the devotees accepted the coins and proceeded to Gadhada.
Upon reaching Gadhpur, the pilgrims bathed in the sacred Ghela River, arrived at Darbargadh, and felt blessed having the divine darshan of Shriji Maharaj and the holy saints. As everyone presented their respective offerings, they forgot to place the ten rupees given by the Kharapat farmer. At that very moment, Shri Hari Himself brought it up and asked for it. The devotees immediately presented the ten rupees at Shriji Maharaj’s lotus feet.
Holding the coins in His hand, Shriji Maharaj smiled and shook His head knowingly. Observing this, the perceptive Sadguru Brahmanand Swami asked, “O Maharaj! Why did You shake Your head? We could not fathom the secret behind it; please enlighten us!” Shri Hari smiled gently and replied with profound meaning, “In his moment of dire crisis, We will personally have to go to settle the account with this devotee farmer!”
About six months later, the farmer was afflicted with severe leprosy and an unbearable burning sensation across his entire skin. Unable to endure the agonizing torture of the disease, he resolved to commit suicide. He had a bullock cart readied, took a driver along, and set out to drown himself in the ocean. He instructed his driver, “Do not reveal to anyone that I am going to end my life in the sea.”
At that critical juncture, Shri Hari assumed the guise of a Brahmin mendicant and stood directly across the path of the cart. When He inquired about their destination, the driver said, “We are going to visit our relatives in a neighboring village.” Shri Hari, in the disguise of the Brahmin, said, “One should never speak an untruth before a saint, an ascetic, or a Brahmin. You are currently heading to drown yourself in the ocean due to the unbearable agony of leprosy and skin disease. If you heed my words, return home and your body will be completely healed. And if you are determined to drown in the sea, then take these ten bags containing ten thousand rupees!”
With these words, Shri Hari in Brahmin form reminded the farmer of the ten rupees he had sent with the Gadhpur sangh, adding, “We never keep anyone’s offering on credit!”
For a moment, the farmer could hardly believe his ears. Then, Shri Hari revealed His authentic divine form before him, granting him complete conviction. Maharaj said, “Return home and live in peace; your affliction has vanished from this very moment.” Overwhelmed with devotion, the farmer climbed down from the cart and fell prostrate at Maharaj’s lotus feet. He surrendered completely as an earnest devotee of Shri Hari, spent his entire life in devotional remembrance, and at the end of his life, Shri Hari escorted his soul to Akshardham.
