Boda Kamanagar of Sardhar and the Presumption of Imitating the Guru

Boda Kamanagar of Sardhar village was a disciple of Sadguru Ramanand Swami. By background, he belonged to the Ghanchi Muslim community. As Sardhar was the initial capital seat of the princely state of Gondal, royal administrators and officials frequently visited the government offices in the village. Boda Kamanagar was an influential and respected figure in the royal court; virtually no major affair was decided without consulting him. He commanded immense respect throughout the Gondal state, and royal officials were regular visitors at his residence. Having accepted Sadguru Ramanand Swami as his spiritual master (guru), whenever Swami traveled to Sardhar, he hosted Swami at his home.

One day, the young child of another disciple of Ramanand Swami suddenly suffered severe abdominal pain. The devotees informed Swami of the child’s affliction. Swami summoned the young boy and fed him a handful of salt. Shortly afterward, the child had a bowel movement and the agonizing stomach pain vanished entirely. Along with Swami’s other followers, Boda Kamanagar witnessed this miraculous cure firsthand. After staying for a short while, Swami departed on his spiritual tour (satsang vicharan).

A few days later, another individual suffered similar severe stomach pains. His relatives brought the patient to Boda Kamanagar, inquiring about the treatment administered earlier by Sadguru Ramanand Swami. Filled with conceit, Boda Kamanagar arrogantly remarked, “All you need is the remedy, right? I know how to do that as well; why bother Gurudev Ramanand Swami for this?” Without diagnosing the underlying cause or possessing spiritual authority, Boda Kamanagar dissolved a heavy amount of salt into a bowl of water and made the patient drink it. This reckless quackery went terribly wrong—the excessive salt triggered severe dehydration and diarrhea, and the patient tragically died. Boda Kamanagar was left thoroughly disgraced and could not show his face to anyone. Ignorant townsfolk began speaking disparagingly, unfairly attributing blame even to Sadguru Ramanand Swami. Hearing this, devout followers who understood Swami’s supreme spiritual greatness proclaimed, “Swami’s stature is beyond comparison! He is a supremely realized master and an omnipotent divinity (mota purush). His mystical ways are far beyond the comprehension of ordinary mortals like us. His divine realm is entirely transcendent, while our capacity is merely mortal. A mere darshan of Swami is capable of eradicating the deep spiritual afflictions of countless lifetimes—what then to speak of ailments of this transient physical body? Therefore, one should never foolishly attempt to rival or imitate the ways of the Guru.”

However, blinded by ego, Boda Kamanagar failed to accept this profound truth, and gradually fell away from the sacred fellowship of Satsang.

Shri Hari once also demonstrated this profound spiritual principle when He had Premmurti Sachchidanand Swami single-handedly consume an entire feast cooked by Laduba and Jivuba meant for sixty people, thereby vindicating the ancient scriptural narration of Sage Durvasa eating the offerings prepared by the Gopis. Shri Hari consistently taught that the ways of spiritually elevated masters are unique and inscrutable; ordinary mortals cannot fathom their divine actions. Therefore, we should never presume to imitate the actions of great spiritual masters, but rather strictly abide by and carry out their holy instructions (“Mota kare em na karvu, pan motera kahe em karvu”).
