Mukumsinh Koli of Sheldi: Repentance and Shrihari Miraculously Healing the Cow
In the village of Sheldi lived Mukumsinh Koli, an ardent and fearless disciple of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Though physically formidable and courageous, his wife was hostile to spiritual matters, relentlessly quarreling and mocking his faith in the Lord. Mukumsinh exercised immense patience, enduring her verbal assaults in silence.
One evening, as she sat milking the family cow, she launched into another barrage of bitter insults against Satsang. In a momentary flash of unthinking temper, Mukumsinh swung his sword. Ducking swiftly, his wife avoided the blade, but the sharp steel struck the abdomen of the pregnant cow, severely slashing its belly! Blood gushed onto the stable floor as the innocent animal collapsed in agony. The sight instantly shattered Mukumsinh’s rage, plunging him into unspeakable horror and remorse. Terrified of the heinous sin of cow-slaughter (gau-hatya) and the social disgrace, he contemplated ending his life. Yet in that dark hour, Shrihari’s injunction in the Shikshapatri echoed in his mind: never commit suicide under any circumstance.
Falling to his knees beside the dying animal, he wept bitter tears of repentance, crying out to Shriji Maharaj: “O Supreme Lord! You alone are my refuge; deliver me from this terrible sin and preserve the life of this innocent cow!” Touched by his sincere grief, Bhagwan Swaminarayan physically manifested in the dimly lit stable! Placing His hand upon Mukumsinh’s head, the Lord comforted him: “Weep no more, My devotee; We shall preserve your cow. Discard all thoughts of self-harm.” Shrihari gently stroked the cow’s lacerated flank with His divine palm. Instantly, the gaping wound sealed without leaving even a scar, and the cow stood up fully rejuvenated!
At daybreak, malicious neighbors arrived with village elders and royal guards, demanding Mukumsinh’s arrest for cow-slaughter. But upon entering the enclosure, they were dumbfounded to find the cow resting peacefully, contentedly chewing its cud! Overawed by this undeniable miracle, the village elders exclaimed: “Mukumsinh! Your devotion is pure and your Lord Swaminarayan is truly God, performing this celestial wonder to safeguard His devotee’s honor!”
