Sheth Hirachand of Ahmedabad: Transcendental Samadhi and Wrestling with Shrihari
In Ahmedabad lived Sheth Hirachand, an elevated devotee prone to involuntary bouts of transcendental trance (samadhi). On one occasion, Hirachand was leading a large pilgrim caravan from Ahmedabad to Kariyani for the grand Annakut festival, where Bhagwan Swaminarayan was in residence.
While the caravan camped overnight near the shrine of Bhimnath, Hirachand sat in meditation. Instantly, his consciousness was drawn so powerfully into the divine form of Shrihari that he slipped into an ecstatic samadhi! In this state of total detachment from bodily awareness, Hirachand leaped to his feet and sprinted barefoot into the pitch-black night toward Kariyani! Down dusty tracks and over stony trails, he ran an astounding twenty-four kilometers (eight gaau) in continuous ecstatic absorption, while two companions sprinted frantically behind to keep him in sight.
Just before dawn, Hirachand reached Kariyani. Inside Vasta Khachar’s courtyard, Shriji Maharaj was resting in an eastern chamber alongside Sadguru Atmanand Swami, Sadguru Vyapkanand Swami, and personal attendants. Still in deep trance, Hirachand pounded upon the closed door with a mighty cry! The moment Maharaj unlatched the door, the entranced merchant seized the Lord in a powerful bear hug! Entering into the divine spirit of the moment, the playful Lord engaged the stout merchant in a vigorous wrestling match (kusti)! When alarmed ascetics rushed to intervene, Maharaj waved them back. Locked in combat, the Lord lifted and wrestled Hirachand to the floor, both breaking into a profuse sweat despite the morning chill. Rising again, Hirachand charged once more, only for Maharaj to grapple and pin him down again.
Finally, Shrihari commanded in a resonant voice: “Hirachand!” The divine call instantly shattered the trance! Opening his eyes, Hirachand found himself in Kariyani, holding the sacred lotus feet of Bhagwan Swaminarayan! He fell to the ground in utter wonder, chanting the holy name, completely oblivious of how he had traversed twenty-four kilometers in the dark of night. With a sparkling smile, Shrihari inquired about the welfare of the Ahmedabad congregation as though nothing unusual had transpired!
Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami celebrated his pure detachment in the Bhaktachintamani (Chapter 120, Verse 44-45):
Bhakt Amdavade anek, bhaje Hari taje nahi tek..!
Bhakt aadi Sheth Ichharam, Hirachand be bhakt akaam..!!
- From Sadguru Shri Bhayatmanand Swami ni Vato… 🙇🏻♂️🙏
