મહેમદાવાદના પરમ એકાંતિક ભક્ત શ્રીબેચર ભટ્ટ વળાદરા બ્રાહ્મણની નાતના આગેવાન હતા, તેમને સત્સંગ થવાથી મહેમદાવાદમાં ઘણા ભક્તોને સત્સંગ થયેલો. મહેમદાવાદના સર્વે સત્સંગીઓએ શ્રીજીમહારાજને અનેકવખત ખુબ ધામધૂમથી ગામમાં પધરાવ્યા હતા, મહારાજ સાથેના સૌ સંતો અને ભક્તોને સુંદર રસોઇઓ કરીને ખુબ પ્રેમથી જમાડ્યા હતા. બેચર ભટ્ટને મહારાજનો નિશ્ચય દ્રઢ હતો, જયારે મહેમદાવાદમાં કોઈ સત્સંગી ન હતા, તે સમયે તો સ્વામિનારાયણના સંતોને તિરસ્કાર કરીને ગામમાં પણ પેસવા દેતા નહિ, તેવા સમયમાં મહારાજની આજ્ઞાથી સત્સંગ વિચરણ કરતા પદ્મનાભાનંદ સ્વામી મહેમદાવાદ આવ્યા. ક્યાંય ઉતારો ન મળતા બેચરભટ્ટની પોળમાં ઘર ઉપરના અવાવરું મેડા ઉપર ઉતર્યા, પરંતુ ત્યાં આવી અવાવરું સ્થળે કોઈ માણસો સન્યાસી પદ્મનાભાનંદ સ્વામી પાસે સતસંગ કથા સાંભળવા પણ આવે નહિ, અને ક્યારેક તો પદ્મનાભાનંદ સ્વામીને ગામમાં ભિક્ષા પણ ન મળે એવી સ્થિતિ હતી, પણ સ્વામી તો ત્યાં એ અવાવરું મકાનમાં જ રહયા. એ વખતે બેચરભટ્ટ અફીણના હરેડ બંધાણી હતા, સન્યાસી પદ્મનાભાનંદ સ્વામી ત્યાં તેમના મકાનના અવાવરું મેડા ઉપર ભજન કરતા હતા.
એકદિવસ બેચર ભટ્ટથી થોડુ વધારે અફીણ લેવાઈ ગયું તે કેફ ચડવાથી વ્યાકુળ થઇ ગયા, આમ તેમ ડોલવા લાગ્યા, એવી સ્થિતિ થઇ ગઈ કે કદાચ મૃત્યુ થઇ જાય ! આ જાણીને સન્યાસી પદ્મનાભાનંદ સ્વામીએ બેચર ભટ્ટને બાવડું પકડીને સામે બેસાર્યા, પદ્મનાભાનંદ સ્વામીએ બેચર ભટ્ટને ‘ સ્વામિનારાયણ ! સ્વામિનારાયણ ! ‘ ભજન કરાવ્યું તે વખતે સ્વામી પણ તેમનો હાથ પકડીને બેઠા અને તેમની સાથે ઉંચે સ્વરેથી ભજન કરવા લાગ્યા આથી તેમને પીડા મટી ગઈ, અને ભાનમાં આવી ગયા ભટ્ટજીને અદભુત શાંતિ થઇ ગઈ આથી તેમને સ્વામીમાં વિશ્વાસ બેઠો.
એ દિવસ પછી સ્વામીને પણ મહેમદાવાદમાં રહેલા બીજા સન્યાસીઓ સાથે જમાડે, ગામના લોકો સાથે સ્વામીની પાસે શ્રીજીમહારાજના નિશ્ચયની વાતો સાંભળે, આમ બેચર ભટ્ટને સ્વામિનારાયણ ભગવાન પ્રત્યે ખુબ ભાવ થયો.
બેચર ભટ્ટ દર પૂનમે ડાકોર દર્શને જતા, આ રીતે એક વખત વીશ પચીશ માણસોના સંઘ સાથે ડાકોર દર્શને ગયા. ત્યાં બેચર ભટ્ટને ફરીને પદ્મનાભનંદ સ્વામીને મળવા નો સંકલ્પ થયેલો અને પોતે અગાઉ તેમની મહાનતા જોયેલી આથી સંઘના માણસોને બેચરભટ્ટે વાત કરી કે વડતાલમાં પદ્મનાભનંદ નામના એક સારા સાધુ છે, તો આપણે સૌ ત્યાં તેના દર્શન કરવા જઈએ, એટલે સૌ પદ્મનાભનંદ સ્વામીના દર્શન કરવા માટે વડતાલ આવ્યા, પદ્મનાભાનંદ સ્વામીને શોધીને મળ્યા, બરાબર તે સમયે વડતાલમાં શ્રીસ્વામિનારાયણ ભગવાન સામે ભક્તોની સભા હતી, તે સમયે પદ્મનાભાનંદ સ્વામી મહેમદાવાદના સર્વે ભક્તોને લઈને સભામાં લાવ્યા.
સ્વામીએ મહેમદાવાદમાં પોતાને બેચરભટ્ટે ઉતારો આપ્યો હતો તે વાત કરી, શ્રીજીમહારાજ ખુબ રાજી થયા, સૌ સંઘને ઘી સાકરના સીધા અપાવ્યા પછી તે સૌ બપોરે રસોઈ કરતા હતા, તે સમયે મહેમદાવાદના બ્રાહ્મણોએ એવો સંકલ્પ કર્યો કે આપણને મળ્યા તે પદ્મનાભાનંદ સ્વામીના ગુરુ સ્વામિનારાયણ જો ભગવાન હોય, તો અત્યારે વગર આમંત્રણે આપણી રસોઈ જમવા આવશે, આવો સૌએ મનમાં સંકલ્પ કર્યો, સૌએ રસોઈ તૈયાર કરી.
મહારાજ પોતાને ઉતારે હતા, ત્યારે પાર્ષદોને કહ્યું કે ચાલો આપણે ફરવા જવું છે, એમ કહીને ઘોડે બેસીને ચાલ્યા જ્યાં મહેમદાવાદનો સંઘ હતો ત્યાં આવ્યા. સૌ બ્રાહ્મણો જમવાની તૈયારી કરતા હતા ત્યાં આવીને મહારાજે ઘોડેથી ઉતરીને જમવાનું માગ્યું અને સૌએ ખુબ હેતથી મહારાજને જમાડ્યા, મહારાજ પણ ખુબ સ્નેહથી તેમનું પીરસેલું ભોજન જમ્યા અને વાતો કરી આવી મહારાજની મધુર વાણી સાંભળીને તેઓએ મહારાજનો ભગવાનપણાનો દ્રઢ નિશ્ચય કયો.
બેચરભટ્ટ વળાદરા બ્રાહ્મણ નાતના આગેવાન અને વહેવારે સુખી હતા, મહેમદાવાદનો સત્સંગ થયો તેમાં તેમનો ખુબ ફાળો છે, તેવા જ વળાદરા બ્રાહ્મણ નાતના બીજા આગેવાન દુર્લભરામ હતા, તે ખુબ ધનાઢ્ય હતા, કોઈ કારણસર તેમને બેચરભટ્ટ સાથે અણબનાવ થયો આથી મહેમદાવાદના સત્સંગમાં પણ વિક્ષેપ થયો, તેની જાણ થતા મહારાજ મહેમદાવાદ પધાર્યા, પ્રથમ બેચરભટ્ટને મળ્યા, અને દુર્લભરામ સાથે સમાધાન કરવા કહ્યું, ત્યારે બેચરભટ્ટે કહ્યું કે આપની આજ્ઞાથી હું દુર્લભરામના જોડા માથે ચડાવીને માફી માગું, પછી મહારાજે દુર્લભરામને બેચરભટ્ટની માફી માગીને સમાધાન કરવા કહ્યું અને બેચરભટ્ટની પાઘડી હાથમાં લઈને માફી માંગવા કહ્યું, પણ દુર્લભરામે તેમ કરવાની પણ સાફ ના પાડી, પછી સમય જતા તેમના ઘરે વહેવારીક પ્રસંગ આવતા નાતના આગેવાનોની માગણીથી દુર્લભરામે બેચર ભટ્ટ ઘરે જઈને હાથ જોડીને માફી માગવી પડી પરંતુ બેચરભટ્ટ તો નિર્માનપણે તેમને હાથ જોડીને પ્રણામ કરીને નમ્યા, અને તેમના વહેવારમાં પણ ભળી ગયા આવા એ ભક્ત હતા. महेमदाबाद के बेचर भट्ट और श्रीजी महाराज
महेमदाबाद के परम एकांतिक भक्त श्री बेचर भट्ट वळादरा ब्राह्मण जाति के प्रमुख (अगुआ) थे। उनके सत्संगी बनने से महेमदाबाद के अनेक भक्तों को सत्संग की प्राप्ति हुई। महेमदाबाद के सभी सत्संगियों ने श्रीजी महाराज को कई बार बड़ी धूमधाम से गाँव में पधराया। महाराज के साथ पधारे सभी संतों और भक्तों के लिए सुंदर रसोई बनाकर अत्यंत प्रेमपूर्वक भोजन कराया।
बेचर भट्ट का श्रीजी महाराज के स्वरूप में दृढ़ निश्चय था। जब आरंभ में महेमदाबाद में कोई सत्संगी नहीं था, उस समय लोग स्वामीनारायण संप्रदाय के संतों का तिरस्कार करते थे और उन्हें गाँव में प्रवेश भी नहीं करने देते थे। ऐसे प्रतिकूल समय में महाराज की आज्ञा से सत्संग विचरण करते हुए सद्गुरु पद्मनाभानंद स्वामी महेमदाबाद पधारे। गाँव में कहीं भी ठहरने का स्थान न मिलने पर वे बेचर भट्ट की पोल (गली) में उनके घर के ऊपर एक वीरान चौबारे (मेडे) पर ठहरे। ऐसे वीरान स्थान पर पद्मनाभानंद स्वामी के पास सत्संग-कथा सुनने कोई नहीं आता था। यहाँ तक कि कभी-कभी तो स्वामी को गाँव में भिक्षा भी नहीं मिलती थी। फिर भी स्वामी उसी वीरान स्थान पर रहकर अनन्य भाव से भजन-कीर्तन करते रहे। उस समय बेचर भट्ट अफीम के भारी व्यसनी थे, जबकि पद्मनाभानंद स्वामी उनके मकान के वीरान चौबारे पर निरंतर प्रभु-भजन में लीन रहते थे।
एक दिन बेचर भट्ट से असावधानीवश अत्यधिक मात्रा में अफीम का सेवन हो गया। तीव्र नशा चढ़ने से वे अत्यंत व्याकुल हो उठे और उनका शरीर डगमगाने लगा। उनकी दशा इतनी बिगड़ गई कि प्राण संकट में पड़ गए! यह जानकर संन्यासी पद्मनाभानंद स्वामी ने तुरंत आकर बेचर भट्ट की बाँह पकड़ी और उन्हें अपने सामने बिठाया। स्वामी ने उनका हाथ थामे रखकर उच्च स्वर में ‘स्वामीनारायण! स्वामीनारायण!’ महामंत्र का जप कराना प्रारंभ किया और स्वयं भी जोर-जोर से कीर्तन करने लगे। इस दिव्य भजन के प्रभाव से उनकी संपूर्ण वेदना शांत हो गई, वे पूर्ण होश में आ गए और उनके अंतःकरण में अद्भुत शांति का संचार हुआ। इस अलौकिक अनुभव से बेचर भट्ट के मन में स्वामी के प्रति अटूट विश्वास और श्रद्धा स्थापित हो गई।
उस दिन के बाद से बेचर भट्ट स्वामी को महेमदाबाद के अन्य संन्यासियों के साथ आदरपूर्वक भोजन कराने लगे। गाँव के लोगों के साथ बैठकर वे स्वामी के मुख से श्रीजी महाराज के भगवानपने के निश्चय की वार्ताएँ सुनते। इस प्रकार बेचर भट्ट के हृदय में भगवान स्वामीनारायण के प्रति अनन्य भाव और भक्ति जागृत हुई।
बेचर भट्ट प्रति पूर्णिमा को डाकोरजी के दर्शन करने जाया करते थे। एक बार वे बीस-पच्चीस लोगों के संघ के साथ डाकोर दर्शन करने गए। वहाँ बेचर भट्ट के मन में पुनः पद्मनाभानंद स्वामी से मिलने का संकल्प हुआ, क्योंकि वे पहले ही स्वामी का दिव्य प्रभाव देख चुके थे। अतः उन्होंने संघ के साथियों से कहा, “वड़ताल में पद्मनाभानंद स्वामी नामक एक श्रेष्ठ साधु रहते हैं, तो हम सभी को वहाँ उनके दर्शन करने चलना चाहिए।” सभी लोग स्वामी के दर्शन हेतु वड़ताल आए और उन्हें खोजकर मिले। ठीक उसी समय वड़ताल में श्री स्वामीनारायण भगवान के सम्मुख भक्तों की विशाल सभा चल रही थी। पद्मनाभानंद स्वामी महेमदाबाद के सभी भक्तों को उस दिव्य सभा में ले आए।
स्वामी ने श्रीजी महाराज को बताया कि महेमदाबाद में बेચર भट्ट ने उन्हें अपने घर आश्रय दिया था। यह सुनकर श्रीजी महाराज अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए। महाराज ने संघ के सभी लोगों को शुद्ध घी और शक्कर आदि की उत्तम भोजन सामग्री (सीधा) दिलवाई। दोपहर में जब महेमदाबाद के ब्राह्मण भोजन बना रहे थे, तब उनके मन में यह संकल्प हुआ: “यदि हमें मिले पद्मनाभानंद स्वामी के गुरु स्वामीनारायण साक्षात् भगवान हैं, तो वे बिना किसी निमंत्रण के स्वयं अभी हमारी बनाई रसोई जीमने आएँगे!” सभी ने मन में ऐसा संकल्प करके रसोई तैयार की।
उस समय श्रीजी महाराज अपने आवास पर विराजमान थे। उन्होंने पार्षदों से कहा, “चलिए, हमें थोड़ा भ्रमण करने चलना है।” ऐसा कहकर महाराज घोड़े पर सवार होकर सीधे वहीं पधारे जहाँ महेमदाबाद का संघ रसोई बना रहा था। सभी ब्राह्मण जब भोजन परोसने की तैयारी कर रहे थे, तभी महाराज ने घोड़े से उतरकर स्वयं भोजन माँगा! सभी ने अत्यंत प्रेम और हर्ष से श्रीजी महाराज को भोजन कराया। महाराज ने भी बड़े स्नेह से उनका परोसा हुआ भोजन आरोग्य और उनसे दिव्य वार्ताएँ कीं। महाराज की ऐसी मधुर वाणी और अंतर्यामी स्वरूप का प्रत्यक्ष पर्चा देखकर उन सभी के हृदय में महाराज के साक्षात् भगवान होने का दृढ़ निश्चय हो गया।
बेचर भट्ट वळादरा ब्राह्मण जाति के अगुआ और व्यवहार में संपन्न व्यक्ति थे। महेमदाबाद में सत्संग के विस्तार में उनका बहुत बड़ा योगदान था। उन्हीं की जाति के एक अन्य प्रमुख दुर्लभराम थे, जो अत्यंत धनवान थे। किसी कारणवश दुर्लभराम और बेचर भट्ट में अनबन हो गई, जिससे महेमदाबाद के सत्संग में भी बाधा उत्पन्न हुई। जब इसकी सूचना श्रीजी महाराज को मिली, तो वे स्वयं महेमदाबाद पधारे। सर्वप्रथम वे बेचर भट्ट से मिले और दुर्लभराम के साथ सुलह करने को कहा। तब बेचर भट्ट ने अत्यंत नम्रता से कहा, “महाराज! आपकी आज्ञा हो तो मैं दुर्लभराम की जूतियाँ अपने सिर पर रखकर उनसे क्षमा माँगने को तैयार हूँ।” तत्पश्चात महाराज ने दुर्लभराम को बेचर भट्ट से क्षमा माँगकर समाधान करने को कहा और बेचर भट्ट की पगड़ी हाथ में लेकर क्षमा माँगने का निर्देश दिया, परंतु दुर्लभराम ने ऐसा करने से साफ़ मना कर दिया। कालांतर में दुर्लभराम के परिवार में कोई व्यावहारिक प्रसंग आया, तब जाति के पंचों और प्रमुखों के कहने पर दुर्लभराम को बेचर भट्ट के घर जाकर हाथ जोड़कर क्षमा माँगनी पड़ी। परंतु निरभिमानी भक्त बेचर भट्ट ने किंचित् भी मान रखे बिना हाथ जोड़कर उन्हें शीश नवाया और सहज भाव से उनके पारिवारिक व्यवहार में सम्मिलित हो गए। ऐसे महान और निरभिमानी भक्त थे वे! ऐसे आज्ञापालक और निरभिमानी भक्त की महिमा गाते हुए सद्गुरु श्री निष्कुलानंद स्वामी ने श्री भक्तचिंतामणि के प्रकरण १२૧, कड़ी १७ में लिखा है:

Bechar Bhatt of Mahemdavad and Shriji Maharaj
Shri Bechar Bhatt, a devoted and exalted disciple (Ekantik bhakta) of Mahemdavad, was a prominent leader of the Valadra Brahmin community. Through his entry into Satsang, many residents of Mahemdavad were drawn into the holy fellowship. The devotees of Mahemdavad welcomed Shriji Maharaj to their town with great reverence and grandeur on numerous occasions. They lovingly cooked delicious meals and served Maharaj, along with all the accompanying saints and devotees, with immense affection.
Bechar Bhatt possessed staunch and unshakeable conviction in Shriji Maharaj’s supreme divine status. In the early days, when there was not a single Satsangi in Mahemdavad, the townsfolk held deep resentment towards the Swaminarayan sadhus and would not permit them to set foot in the village. During those challenging times, Sadguru Padmanabhanand Swami arrived in Mahemdavad while traveling for Satsang under Shriji Maharaj’s divine command. Finding no shelter anywhere, he took lodging in an abandoned, dilapidated attic (medo) above a house in Bechar Bhatt’s alley (pol). In such an isolated place, nobody would visit Swami to listen to spiritual discourses, and at times, Swami could not even obtain alms (bhiksha) in the town. Despite these hardships, Swami remained steadfastly in that abandoned building, absorbed in devotional singing and meditation. At that time, Bechar Bhatt was severely addicted to opium, while Sadguru Padmanabhanand Swami continuously engaged in divine remembrance in the attic above.
One day, Bechar Bhatt inadvertently consumed an excessive amount of opium. Overwhelmed by its potent intoxication, he became intensely restless and collapsed, trembling violently. His condition deteriorated rapidly to the point where death seemed imminent! Upon learning of this, Sadguru Padmanabhanand Swami rushed down, firmly held Bechar Bhatt by his arm, and seated him before him. Swami held his hand and began chanting the holy divine name, “Swaminarayan! Swaminarayan!”, urging Bechar Bhatt to chant along while singing loudly himself. By the divine power of the holy name and Swami’s grace, Bechar Bhatt’s agony vanished, he regained full consciousness, and experienced extraordinary inner peace. This miraculous experience inspired unwavering faith and trust in Swami within his heart.
From that day onward, Bechar Bhatt began serving meals to Swami alongside the other ascetics residing in Mahemdavad. Seated with the townspeople, he listened attentively to Swami’s discourses establishing firm faith in Shriji Maharaj’s supreme divinity. Thus, Bechar Bhatt developed profound love and devotion toward Bhagwan Swaminarayan.
Bechar Bhatt made a regular pilgrimage to Dakor for darshan on every full moon day (Poonam). On one such occasion, he traveled with a group of twenty to twenty-five pilgrims. While in Dakor, recalling Swami’s spiritual greatness, Bechar Bhatt felt a strong inner wish to meet Sadguru Padmanabhanand Swami again. He spoke to his companions, “A noble sadhu named Padmanabhanand Swami resides in Vadtal; let us all go there and receive his holy darshan.” The group journeyed to Vadtal, searched for Padmanabhanand Swami, and met him. At that exact time, Bhagwan Swaminarayan was presiding over an assembly of devotees in Vadtal. Padmanabhanand Swami brought all the devotees from Mahemdavad into the divine assembly.
Swami narrated to Shriji Maharaj how kindly Bechar Bhatt had given him shelter in Mahemdavad. Hearing this, Shriji Maharaj was exceedingly pleased. He arranged for generous rations of pure ghee, sugar, and flour to be distributed to the entire group. In the afternoon, while the Brahmins of Mahemdavad were preparing their meal, a silent prayer arose in their hearts: “If Swaminarayan, the Guru of Padmanabhanand Swami whom we met, is truly Bhagwan Himself, then He will surely come uninvited to dine on the food we are preparing!” With this heartfelt wish, they completed cooking the meal.
Meanwhile, Shriji Maharaj was resting at His lodging. He called out to His attendants (parshads), “Come, let us go for a ride.” Mounting His horse, Maharaj rode directly to the place where the pilgrims of Mahemdavad were encamped. Just as the Brahmins were preparing to eat, Maharaj dismounted from His horse and directly asked for food! Overjoyed, the devotees lovingly served Shriji Maharaj. Maharaj relished the meal served with such deep affection and conversed warmly with them. Listening to Maharaj’s nectarous words and witnessing His omniscient divinity, everyone developed resolute faith in Shriji Maharaj as the Supreme Lord.
Bechar Bhatt was an esteemed leader of the Valadra Brahmin community and was well-settled socially and financially. He played a significant role in nurturing the Satsang fellowship in Mahemdavad. Another prominent leader of the same Brahmin community was Durlabhram, who was exceedingly wealthy. Due to some disagreement, a rift developed between Durlabhram and Bechar Bhatt, which began to cause friction within the local Satsang. Learning of this situation, Shriji Maharaj personally visited Mahemdavad. He first met Bechar Bhatt and urged him to reconcile with Durlabhram. Bechar Bhatt replied with profound humility, “Maharaj, if it is Your command, I am ready to carry Durlabhram’s shoes upon my head and beg for his forgiveness.” Maharaj then met Durlabhram and requested him to reconcile by holding Bechar Bhatt’s turban in his hands and seeking forgiveness, but Durlabhram flatly refused. Later in life, when an important family event occurred at Durlabhram’s home, the elders of the community insisted that Durlabhram go to Bechar Bhatt’s house with folded hands to apologize. When he arrived, the humble and selfless Bechar Bhatt greeted him with folded hands, bowed without a trace of ego, and whole-heartedly joined in his family celebrations. Glorifying such an obedient and humble devotee, Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami composed in Shri Bhakta Chintamani (Chapter 121, Verse 17):
Mota bhakta chhe Mahemdavad, bhajya Hari ne taji upadh..!
Dvij bhakta kahiye Dhaneshwar, Durlabhram ne bhakta Bechar..!!
