Hamir Bhagat of Gadhpur and the Patched Garments of Shriji Maharaj

Among the devoted attendant disciples (parshads) of Shri Hari in Gadhpur, Hamir Bhagat held a special place. Shri Hari was immensely pleased with him upon seeing his natural simplicity, spirit of detachment (nispruhipan), selfless service, and total humility (nirmanibhav).

Hamir Bhagat would collect discarded rags and pieces of torn cloth from the Darbargadh, stitch them together into garments, and wear them. Even if someone offered him brand new clothes, he would never accept them. During that period, construction of the majestic temple of Shri Gopinathji Maharaj was progressing in Gadhpur. Quarrying heavy stones from the Ghela River bed, carrying them on their heads, hauling mud, grinding lime, assisting the masons—everyone was immersed in rigorous physical seva. As a consequence of this intense manual labor, the clothes of the sadhus and parshads were torn to shreds. One day, while Sadguru Muktanand Swami was seated beside Shriji Maharaj, the sadhus engaged in this temple service arrived to take Maharaj’s darshan. Among them, Suryanand Swami quietly whispered into Muktanand Swami’s ear that the clothes of all the sadhus and parshads had become completely frayed and were no longer fit to wear.

After all the sadhus and parshads departed, Maharaj asked Muktanand Swami what they had been discussing. Muktanand Swami explained that the clothes of the saints and devotees engaged in construction seva were completely torn, and they were talking about that situation. Hearing Muktanand Swami’s reply, Maharaj said nothing, yet He became noticeably sorrowful and despondent. After a little while, Maharaj summoned Hamir Bhagat. His attire had numerous patches and was stitched together in several places, yet it was cleanly washed. Maharaj asked Hamir Bhagat for his worn-out, patched clothes. Overjoyed, Bhagat gladly presented his garments to Maharaj.

The next day, Maharaj put on the torn, heavily patched clothes stitched together from scrap cloth given by Hamir Bhagat. In the sandy courtyard of Dada Khachar’s Darbargadh, He had a low wooden stool (bajoth) placed and sat upon it with a somber, sorrowful expression. Seeing Maharaj seated in this state, all the saints and devotees gathered around Him. Maharaj did not utter a word to anyone and remained quietly dejected. Beholding Maharaj so despondent, everyone’s heart sank with grief. The Paramhansas folded their hands and prayed earnestly, inquiring into the cause of His sorrow. Maharaj then addressed them: “I wear the fine garments and ornaments that devotees lovingly offer to Us. Observing this, instead of upholding their vow of detachment (nispruhi vartaman) by wearing torn clothes, these Paramhansas abandon their detached spirit and harbor a desire for fine garments! We accept the worship and offerings of Satsangis purely for their spiritual welfare, not for Our personal comfort. For Paramhansas, maintaining absolute desirelessness and detachment is their primary duty!” All the saints bowed with folded hands, humbly acknowledged their mistake, and took a firm vow to strictly observe detachment according to Maharaj’s command.

At that time, many devotees from various regions had arrived for darshan. They observed this entire divine episode and noticed the ragged condition of the sadhus’ attire. With Shriji Maharaj’s permission and command, the visiting devotees performed respectful worship (puja) of all the Paramhansas whose dhotis were torn and reverently draped them with new dhotis, thereby pleasing Maharaj immensely. Praising the sadhus before the assembly, Maharaj said, “These sadhus do not belong to this material realm; even deities like Brahma find their darshan exceedingly rare! Yet behold how diligently they maintain their vows! I am immensely pleased with them, but from time to time, gentle reminders must be given—such is the nature of this world.” Saying this, Maharaj lovingly embraced all the Paramhansas. Thus, on that day, Shri Hari enacted this divine leela by donning the patched garments of Parshad Hamir Bhagat to impart a profound lesson on detachment to the saints. (Gadhpur Leela - Charitra 34)

In Bhakta Chintamani, Chapter 112, Verse 18, Parshad Hamir Bhagat is remembered: Bhakt Bhāṇo Hamīr bhaṇī je, Umojī Ubho bhakt gaṇīje…! Ravojī Ratanjī Gambhīr, Lākho Kaslo Bhīm Hamīr..!!
